Good morning Mick and all GN's on a still dry morning in North Yorkshire. I can see the outline of the tree against the sky and already hear a crow cawing but cant see it. So I am back to join you all and see what has been happening . Have had a couple of days of all sorts of feelings from joy to frustration.
After all the awful weather we have been having and endless jobs that I was really struggling to do, with my back and knees adding to the frustration of not being able to even plant a small plant, I had had a phone call from a friend , who also said that the weather had improved etc. So one of the few joys of living alone is that you can change your plans at the drop of a hat and are causing no problems for anyone else.
So I went on tuesday to a meeting at Upfront for the techie genius that is Artie,to sort out a couple of problems on the laptop and to ask his advice on how to clear the wretched AI nuiscance that keeps coming up unasked etc. So sorted a few things, not good news on how to get rid of AI and also am rather fed up to learn that probably my laptop wont be able to cope with latest stuff and windows 10 is going to be no good so that I shall be pushed into forking out for a new laptop. Anyway that is for a later discussion and so I hurriedly packed up and shoved things in the car to stay overnight and shot off to enjoy a peaceful drive to my friends.
Lovely to see them, much catching up etc and then I went to have a look on my laptop for something only to find that I had not got my lead. Searched the car with not much hope but no. I had left if behind in my rush. Rather annoyed with myself and then only had my phone. I was able to read some emails etc on it, but as a fast touch typist, it absolutely drives me wild trying to use it, to send messages on. I make mistakes touching the wrong letters and it is maddening constantly trying to tell me words that I do not want and interfering with my flow. So that was a bit of a pain and I missed keeping up with all the news and views.
On the wednesday I was going to come home to carry on with the various abandoned jobs, but oh it was lovely and dry, and despite quite a keen wind a real feeling of change in the weather, but the forecast said good for the day but then back to cold and rain so naturally I threw away all good intentions and had a much better idea.
I drove across on quiet roads and being wednesday and the half term over in that area , had the roads to myself and a wonderful wander across to Kirby Stephen, where I was able to have a coffee and a little walk around, before taking the road to happiness to my beloved Swaledale. It was a struggle to walk about but who cares. Mentally I was full of joy and so happy to get back to swaledale, my first time this year. I have missed it so much between bad weather and being ill etc.
What a wonderful time I had. I always have my binoculars with me , and was so lucky on this trip. There are no leaves on the trees yet, which allowed me to see wonderful drifts of snowdrops through little woods and hedges. They were everywhere and all looking marvellous, this awful weather has been fine for them and they were a feast for the eyes.
As I wandered along stopping for great views I also had some fantastic sightings too. There was an oystercatcher just stood on a stone wall and I watched it take off, and I also saw lapwings, and my favourite bird to hear up there , a curlew, and then glossy pheasants and there was the sound of many other birds as they all are telling us that spring is here .
I saw a flock of Soay small black sheep with 5 black lambs, then a flock of white sheep with more early lambs, and finally some jacobs but no lambs. Always have some secateurs with me and there was a tree full of hazel catkins so I cut two small sprigs to bring home to tell me that even if the weather gets worse again we are on our way.
So rather like dogs going round their patch if they have been away and checking everything is as it should be, I wandered along by the side of the river Swale, seeing much of the flooded fields improving but still with some standing water , and noting fallen branches etc. It was a wonderful day, really uplifting to the spirit.
The mundane had to be included too and so called at the larger Tesco at catterick to get some bits and pieces, and they have a much larger choice than my local one. I used to live in Richmond and used that store regularly and when I went for the disabled buggy a lovely lady who works there came rushing over and said how pleased she was to see me etc etc. So had a wander around and bought a few bits and then went to go home, but had stayed there longer than expected and so got stuck in the evening rush hour. So much so that I thought if I went home first I would be late for the whist drive. So I rather decadently bought some chow mein and of course always have my picnic stuff in the car and so sat in a layby with water and chinese watching the traffic go by and then went straight to the whist drive. Had a pleasant evening and even won a raffle prize. So arrived home at 10.30pm somewhat shattered by what a great day.
I was of course paying for it yesterday and it has taken me all day to even begin to catch up but I did at least manage to go back and find my lead so here I am back to the everyday. In quite a bit of pain and slow today, but never mind. Whatever the weather brings now I have this jewel of a day to be my treasure to look at on dark days, and believe I will get back there again soon.
Mick hope you have a good bus trip. As regards to the Royal Mail if they were a local firm they would be being done for fraud. They put the price of stamps up, say that 1st class delivery will be in one or two days and then put the parcel stuff first and do not do what they promise. We have had quite a few people here who have missed important hospital appointments as they did not get the letters in time , and disappointed children and friends who think you have forgotten their birthday, when you posted cards in good time and they get them weeks later. Pantglas so sorry for your loss, and send you hugs and hope that there will be some small flower or bird that might give you a moments solace today.
GrandMattie hope your meeting today goes well. Baubles glad your husbands op went ok. I still have to catch up with the news for the last couple of days. Karmalady hope all goes well with your boiler change over.
Well the sky is lightening and grey but no sign of rain, and I need to make a start. Have had to take a painkiller this morning, which doesnt seem to be helping much. Never mind, I shall just plod along. Still no sign of my glasses so I have reluctantly decided I must go to specsavers and buy another pair, but at least they have the prescription and I wont need another eye test. After I have forked out for another pair no doubt the old pair will turn up, but if it does I shall put them by my bed so that I will have a pair there whenever I need them, as am quite good at having to get back out of bed when I reach for my glasses and find I have left them in the kitchen or whatever. Wishing you all a dry and decent day with hopefully a new flower or two coming up in your gardens to cheer the day.
