The angst of Christmas

Glancing through the various threads I am horrified at the pitfalls of Christmas.
Never mind whether or not you invite Great Auntie Maude and the in-laws or that it is “their turn “ to host, now you have to worry about
Norfolk Bronze/Tesco Value/vegan nut roast
Proper roasties or Aunt Bessie’s
Gluten free Christmas pud or will just organic do
The smoked salmon starter - is it Wild salmon, moderately annoyed salmon, farmed salmon (how do the dogs herd them up) or do I give up and do prawn cocktail?
Christmas wrapping paper- a no-no, use reusable cloth bags, but bear in mind Amazon’s tax history when you realise they are the only people still stocking them
Christmas cards or e-cards or emails or none of the above (do nowt and pretend you are donating to charity)
Crackers? OMG no, more plastic tat!
Presents - more charity shop tat which will go straight back, secret santa or Tiffany’s?
Don’t drink and drive of course, but think of the environment and don’t drive at all. Take the train, natch! Platform 7 at Crewe junction is a brilliant place to spend Christmas - think “Brief Encounter.
While you are at it, should you or your children risk going to strange doorsteps , collecting boxes at the ready and hope for a donation in exchange for two lines of We Wish You a Merry Christmas or do you make the poor suckers stand out in the cold for all 19 verses of In Dulce Jubilo (with descant)
So Seasons Greetings and Happy Holidays because of course we don’t want to offend anybody by letting Christ into Christmas, do we? ? ?

Thanks Maw! I was feeling very low this morning & have now had a good giggle.

I have often commented that the dogs must get water wings when they round up the salmon & hubby says im bonkers hmm glad to see there are others out there grin
Its all too easy to get swept along in the rampant commercialism.

Funny but so true!
I needed a good laugh, thanks MawB.

MawB
That was brilliant Maw! Extremely well done! Very witty and also deeply thought-provoking. It should be put in a time-capsule to give a true reflection of Christmas 2019!

I have to say my Christmas cards are all very Nativity based, with the possible exception of some funny cards chosen because they are apt for that person to whom I send them.

Have a Happy Christmas Maw, I know, like me and so many of us it will be bitter-sweet for different reasons but mainly due to the absence of that special person at the table or by our side. But we shall try to be cheerful and count our blessings.

To all who will be alone, as shall I, I send special love and suggest you plan a day of little treats for yourself and pamper yourself through the day. Love from Elle x

Traceyac Sat 14-Dec-19 13:06:54

Oh funny ? funny ? funny ? well done for making me smile ?

Callistemon Sat 14-Dec-19 13:14:42

Tillybelle I always buy charity Christmas cards sold by volunteers in our library.
I did buy a mix, some religious some not.

However, I ran out and went in yesterday for more. There weren't many left - mostly what were still there were the religious ones!

Merry Christmas everyone
Or Happy Holiday
Whatever you prefer

I am wrapping Christmas Gifts and have just found that I have bought my DD two dressing gowns from two different shops in different colours, I think I am losing the few brain cells that I have left tchconfused

Callistemon Sat 14-Dec-19 13:46:26

tchgrin

I feel better now Grannygravy, thanks.
I bought wrapping paper then found all the rolls I bought after Christmas last year, enough to last for years.

grandtanteJE65 Sat 14-Dec-19 13:48:49

Thank you Maw for a great laugh.

And this year Christmas and Hannukah coincide, re letting Christ into Christmas. I have shocked the neighbours by putting up a creche in the front window and st. Nicholas and Svart Piet in another, It's quite fun to watch the dog walkers carefully averting their eyes, while the dogs carefully look around to see if the dreaded warrior cat should happen to be in the front garden, Not that said cat has ever done them any physical harm, he restricts himself to sending very dirty looks in their direction.

Anniel Sat 14-Dec-19 14:14:07

Maw, this was a pleasure to read! You have made my day with your “ mildly annoyed salmon” Keep on writing because i have to say I always pay attention to your posts and so do most of us! Happy Christmas and a cheerful New Year.

phoenix Sat 14-Dec-19 14:21:58

Wild salmon? Ours is positively livid! tchgrin

Judy43 Sat 14-Dec-19 15:24:51

Really made me laugh. A nice change from politics

Aepgirl Sat 14-Dec-19 15:31:31

My point exactly in a previous post, MawB.

NonnaJazz Sat 14-Dec-19 16:28:10

Love the moderately annoyed salmon!

Wild?....I bet they were furious!

Namsnanny Sat 14-Dec-19 16:32:30

So true, and very well put Thanks for some sanity Maw, especially in the last line. I've noticed they (TV media etc.,) will write anything to get out of writing Christmas!! smile

Namsnanny Sat 14-Dec-19 16:38:30

And don't forget even crafting for Christmas (which is just crafting after all and will be done every month of the year if that's what one does!!) raises a lot of hackles in some!

Nowt so queer as folk! (I'm I allowed to say that phrase now?! Well no offence intended)

hazel93 Sat 14-Dec-19 17:13:56

I did more than chuckle !
However, now concerned that the wild salmon my brother has a licence to catch and sends each Christmas may need watching !

Callistemon Sat 14-Dec-19 17:29:56

The elves have promised to visit soon to decorate the tree thank goodness!

Joseph has been stuffed but he and Mary don't have any bottoms yet
The stable all forlorn has yet to be built
The shepherds are still up in the hills somewhere, tending just three sheep, although one sheep looks more like a black labrador
And the Kings have a long way to travel, stuck somewhere in the bottom of the knitting bag in the Orient without any gifts

Northerngirl28 Sat 14-Dec-19 18:11:55

Thank you for this!

Made me laugh out loud after a really difficult week.

Heartening to know I’m not the only one doing the Christmas Juggle?

maddyone Sat 14-Dec-19 19:31:35

First world decisions.
