Prosecco, overated cheap wine

Cheap overrated fizzy Italian wine or not?

mamagran Wed 18-Dec-19 09:04:55

I am not aware of any wine trends at the moment. But I suppose everyone has their preference. My husband is a wine enthusiast and always buys all sorts of amazing wines. I am not very particular with my wines, I just drink what I am in the mood for. But a good Prosecco is definitely on my list on a summer afternoon. I think, just don't but the cheap ones. Just an opinion.

I quite like Prosecco - but I'm no connoisseur of wine. I think there's an awful lot of snobbery about this subject - and sometimes the very expensive wines are found, even by experts, to be not worth the price.

There are trends - no doubt spurred by marketing campaigns - in wine drinking. In the 1980's I remember chardonnay being very fashionable, and there have been several other trends, including pino grigio - and who can forget liebraumilch- so popular in the 70's - once fashionable and then sneered at.

It's all a lot of pretentious nonsense really.

Happy to be a mindless airhead! Cheers!

Another mindless airhead here - I love Prosecco. I especially love it with Aperol!

glammagran Tue 17-Dec-19 22:51:22

But only if it’s on offer otherwise too expensive.

glammagran Tue 17-Dec-19 22:49:00

I find Prosecco terribly sweet and have never found one I liked. Much prefer Cava and Cremant. My favourite of all (apart from champagne) is Nyetimber from England which to my mind is vastly superior to them all

Curlywhirly Tue 17-Dec-19 22:43:21

Well I'm not fussy, I like 'em all - Champagne, Cava, Prosecco, and still like a Cinzano and tonic (everybody laughs when I ask for one, it's sooo 1970s, but don't care!)

That's sad, so many snobs commenting on what they don't even know. Why compare Champagne with Prosecco? They are simply different. Champagne is taken care of for years before becoming ready to drink. Prosecco is young, fresh and requires much less manual labor. Lower price doesn't mean lower quality. Keep champagne for great occasions and enjoy Prosecco whenever you like. Just be smart, buy a good bottle at a honest price.

Stop digging Esspee
Just back from a good night out so I am very mellow.
Early I know but I am not in the first flush of youth, still very much with it though.
Shall we declare a truce?

travelsafar Tue 17-Dec-19 20:22:24

You cant beat a Cinzano and lemonade for a fizzy drink smile It tastes good and i can have a couple and not suffer a headache next day. Only have a tiple at Xmas and new Year, not into the whole wine thingy!!!!

Esspee Tue 17-Dec-19 19:29:39

No wriggling from me @annsixty. I did not attack individual gransnetters and call them airheads.
I said that the people I have served Prosecco to were mindless airheads. I am the one who had to engage in conversation with them so am perfectly entitled to make the observation.
Where I come from we would say you could cause a row in an empty house.

NanaPlenty Tue 17-Dec-19 18:00:56

I like it, I like champagne but it,doesn’t like me much, and I like Cava. In fact I like most things but since the menopause I can’t drink much - not a bad thing I guess, one or two glasses is lovely. Cheers everyone.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 17-Dec-19 17:56:48

Oops no idea where “am” came from

GrannyGravy13 Tue 17-Dec-19 17:56:21

I have been called worse names than an “airhead” on GN tchangry

annsixty Tue 17-Dec-19 17:52:42

I had said I liked Prosecco so of course your post was directed at me and everyone else who likes Prosecco.
Don't try to wriggle out of it now.
Only mindless airheads like Prosecco said your post, ergo I am a mindless airhead.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 17-Dec-19 17:44:24

Esspee no name calling from me, I just said cheers to fellow “fizz” drinkers tchconfused

Blinko Tue 17-Dec-19 17:06:20

It's ok at breakfast with orange juice, along with smoked salmon and scrambled egg.

Esspee Tue 17-Dec-19 17:02:37

Strange place gransnet where one's personal observations are twisted into accusations of name calling. (Looking at you @annsixty, @annodomini, @GrannyGravy13, @inkcog, @Nannarose, @Maggiemaybe, nanaK54 )

Scribbles Tue 17-Dec-19 15:45:09

Not for me, thanks; I'd prefer a glass of Tizer..

timetogo2016 Tue 17-Dec-19 15:06:43

Can`t stand it myself.
Glorified fizzy pop.

nanaK54 Tue 17-Dec-19 15:06:24

I have been gifted 2 bottles of prosecco today, as a mindless airhead I will really enjoy them - cheers!

Maggiemaybe Tue 17-Dec-19 14:54:17

Nannarose Tue 17-Dec-19 14:36:55

Esspee, can you tell me where you conduct tastings so I can avoid them?

kittylester Tue 17-Dec-19 12:47:12

I love prosecco and I'm not ashamed!

GrannyGravy13 Tue 17-Dec-19 12:14:32
