A festive hello to all gransnetters! tchsmile

As everyone else seems to already have their fairy lights twinkling and baubles out, we thought it’s time for us to do the same. So welcome everyone to our annual Gransnet Christmas Party. As health has been top of most of our agendas this year, we’re thrilled that Ensure NutriVigor is sponsoring this year’s festivities.

Not only that but they are giving one lucky gransnetter on this thread a £100 voucher to spend at a shop of their choice to start the new year in style (usual competition T&Cs apply). The winner will be picked at random from all who comment on this thread by 11am on 1st January 2021, so don’t forget to pop on and wish your fellow GNers a merry Christmas! flowers

It’s fair to say 2020 has been a bit of a shocker, and we know that because of health concerns, long distances, or many other reasons, plenty of you will be spending Christmas on your own. Which is where the Gransnet Virtual Christmas Party comes in. No need to battle the ghastly traffic, icy weather or smile through the sprouts. Simply don your sparkliest finery, pour a glass of your favourite tipple and come join us for some good company, virtual mince pies and questionable taste in Christmas decor - we do gaudy very well here at HQ. tchgrin

Everyone is welcome (as long as you bring something tasty to add to our virtual buffet) and even if you’ve got a busy day planned do pop in and wish your fellow gransnetters a Merry Christmas.

In the meantime shall we get into the spirit with some really cheesy Christmas jokes? Who’s first?

We've been chuckling at your jokes here at remote HQ, and it got us thinking... what's your perfect Christmas dinner? Is it traditional with all the trimmings or do you dream of something more alternative? tchgrin

I'll go first... for me it's traditional with two things that are non-negotiable: pigs in blankets and an abundance of gravy. Followed by a cheeseboard and a nice glass of wine of course. wine

We have traditional Christmas Dinner, but prefer chicken to turkey. All the trimmings, followed by Christmas pudding, brandy butter and cream. Nut roast with the vegetable trimmings for my vegetarian granddaughter. Wine to accompany the meal. wine tchsmile

My ideal Christmas Dinner is one where somebody else does all the work. Not fussed about the food as long as there's a nice glass of fizz.

Our Christmas dinner is usually wonderful (cooked by my sister so even better). We have turkey, beef, stuffing, mashed and roast spuds, pigs in blankets, lots of veg, yorkshire puddings and gravy. There is always a choice of puds and some fizz to drink. We won't be going this year but never mind. I could eat I now!

One of the variants of the Danish traditional Christmas dinner:

Roast pork with cracknel served with boiled red cabbage, gravy, boiled potatoes, and small potatoes caramelized in sugar and butter.

This is followed by a pudding made out of rice, boiled in milk, cooled until completely cold, then you add a little sugar to it and finely chopped almonds before turinng it in whipped cream.

Before eating, you add one whole almond, the person who finds it in their portion gets a small present. The pudding is eaten with cold cherry sauce with whole cherries in it.

This is eaten on Christmas Eve in the evening and the tree and presents follows the meal.

Later in the evening we have coffee with some of the traditional Christmas biscuits. Now-a-days, I have cut back a bit and only make three or four different ones, instead of the seven I used to make. But I still bake enough for them to last until Twelfth Night.

The list usually adds up in our household due to individual must haves, so, cranberry sauce, pigs in blankets, stuffing, and xmas log for those not keen on xmas pud and brandy! The other bts are a given.
