What did you think? I caught up with it on iPlayer last night just to see how it went as it was his first Christmas speech, and I thought he did quite well.

I also thought it was a very good idea not to be filmed sitting at a desk surrounded by personal photos which could then be picked apart.

Sharing some of the GN threads with DH, he pointed out that, with all the expertise on politics, knowledge of the future, and how to manage other people’s finances, it’s such a shame that none of the posters with that expertise went into politics to do something about it.
Would you agree?

Those he found to have expertise, knowledge and were prepared to share when a question was asked were probably busy doing something really useful at the time Mollygo.

I wonder why anyone thinks you have to be "in politics" to influence or change policies? I'm not a politician, but some of the groups I belong to and some of the actions I have been involved in have changed things and hopefully improved things. Politics isn't something that is dictated or run by people at the top, it's something anyone can be involved in and influence. I would imagine there are a lot of GNers like me. Perhaps Mollygoyour DH needs to revise his thinking about how things work, what is and isn't politics and realise that the people at the top may make decisions, but in a democracy ordinary people can influence those decisions.

Mollygo Fri 30-Dec-22 17:12:53

No trisher, he doesn’t need to revise his thinking. He was impressed at the knowledge on GN but wondered if all the knowledgeable ladies were making a bigger impact with the ideas on GN.
I’m sure you can claim to be in groups that influence things.
Would you like to share the impact your groups have made on current issues e.g. the NHS, the homeless, social care, rising prices, stopping the UK support for Putin or any other major issues we’re facing at the moment.
Casdon and DaisyAnne have already put put more sensible responses.

Who's trisher?

(She asked disingenuously... 😏)

Well as most people know this government was not voted for by all of us. And some of us could absolutely have forecast the result of a Tory government if not quite the levels this one would manage to take things to. Are actions always successful? Of course they're not, even when a government sympathetic to your principles is in power (think we all know about the Iraq war march). Doesn't mean we stop campaigning. Yet another misconstruing of what politics really involves Mollygo?
There are also local campaigns, many of which change the lives of people more than national ones.
But I wouldn't expect you to agree with me. It doesn't mean I'm wrong. Anyone who doesn't realise the power of people and what politics really involves should consider their views carefully
Who indeed is trisher?

Alegrias? That was my old username. It's really weird, some people have nothing better to do than remember old usernames from social media. Maybe they have a wee book with cross referenced lists in it.

Now, who's trisher?

trisher was a poster who I think 'flounced' but who posted with identical views and posting style as Glorianny who funnily enough started posting very shortly afterwards. Maybe that's just a huge coincidence, but it's understandable if people get confused. I certainly don't have any sort of book, and miss most 're-appearances' but some posters are so distinct it's impossible to miss. Ever thought that some people just have a way better memory than you or I, no need for little books full of cross references? Maybe Glorianny would like to clear up the confusion by either confirming she was trisher or denying that she ever posted as trisher? She could answer the question you've posed twice, so it's obviously important to you. How about it Glorianny set the record straight?

You should all have been at Bearsden Academy, you're so good at spotting returners. ("My Old School" and Alan Cumming reference 😃 )

Rosie51 Sat 31-Dec-22 00:18:31

I just said I wasn't that good at spotting returners, but hey, you do you, as usual. Sorry no memory of ever hearing about Bearsden Academy, should I know it? Is it famous? Does it have any relevance to this thread?

I believe Bearsden was in tv last night But I need to do catch up as I was too exhausted and yes ut sounded kind of relevant

nanna8 Sat 31-Dec-22 06:25:39

You can spot’em a mile off. Truly. Whatever floats their boats, doesn’t matter really.

volver Sat 31-Dec-22 08:23:32

If you leave GN then come back and rejoin, you have to have a new username. No boats need to be floated. 😉

Sorry, having done a quick google, I can't see what relevance it has to a thread about Sunak and a homeless man, or even to some posters having a very recognisable style.

volver Sat 31-Dec-22 10:50:59

Oh, I'll help then.

Apparently its impossible to miss posters with a distinct style. So if somebody comes back pretending to be somebody else, there are those that can always spot them.

On TV last night was a great film about a man who went back to school in Bearsden Academy at the age of 32 and nobody cottoned on.

HTH.

Galaxy Sat 31-Dec-22 11:04:40

I find GN a bit odd about name changing, its considered perfectly normal on MN, in fact a necessary safeguard, as there are women who use the forum to discuss and escape from abusive relationships.
I am not interested in peoples names, I am interested in what they say. Their name is meaningless.
The only time I think its different is when someone is banned and then are name changing and trolling. But that's not what's happening here.

volver Sat 31-Dec-22 11:11:11

I did leave for a while Galaxy and then came back with a completely different username. Someone reported me to GNHQ because they thought I was trying to come back after being banned. 🤦🏼‍♂️

Galaxy Sat 31-Dec-22 11:15:59

Yes I didnt think you were banned. I did once report a banned poster who kept name changing, and pretending to be a worker on a zero hours contract during the pandemic (dont ask it was bizarre). I dont think I would report him now, but who knows, he did drive me crazy grin

volver Sat 31-Dec-22 11:18:21

I don't know who it was, it doesn't matter, but I'm very sure it wasn't you Galaxy. flowers

Lathyrus Sat 31-Dec-22 11:32:01

Or me.

But I am thankful for the easier spelling……..

Casdon Sat 31-Dec-22 11:32:51

Forgive a slight diversion to the Bearsden programme. It was called My Old School, 8pm BBC2 yesterday. I watched it, and it was one of the most interesting stories I’ve seen for a long time, and very well put together. I’m still thinking about why this morning, and what a wasted life Brian/Brandon has had. If you didn’t see it please do!

Lucca Sat 31-Dec-22 11:47:07

Thank you casdon

Callistemon21 Sat 31-Dec-22 12:21:26

It wasn't me either although I still wonder if you flounced because of something I said about a thread being funny volver
