What did you think? I caught up with it on iPlayer last night just to see how it went as it was his first Christmas speech, and I thought he did quite well.

I also thought it was a very good idea not to be filmed sitting at a desk surrounded by personal photos which could then be picked apart.

Sharing some of the GN threads with DH, he pointed out that, with all the expertise on politics, knowledge of the future, and how to manage other people’s finances, it’s such a shame that none of the posters with that expertise went into politics to do something about it.
Would you agree?

Maybe he should have done so himself Mollygo, or perhaps fortune telling, as he must have a crystal ball to know that some Gransnetters aren’t already in politics?

volver Thu 29-Dec-22 10:59:30

I have a question for your DH MollyGo, assuming he is talking about the posts on the News And Politics forum.

What does he expect to see? A lot of posts from older women saying things like "Oh, that Rishi/Keir/Ed is such a nice man, I hear he's nice to his mum, I'm sure they'll sort it all out and we old dears had best just stay out of it and get on with our needlepoint."

Must be a terrible disappointment to him, all these old ladies with opinions.

I had recorded it so looked it over last night- I largely agree with Volver- i felt that it had been scripted for him to include all this- i didnt feel it was just him speaking from his own heart at all. And i agree with Caleo that bit about where his mother lay close by was not neccessary- I was'nt sure about doing it from that setting- a bit too cold and not 'homely' if he wanted it different to H.M the Queens setting surely sitting in the sitting room of their own home would have sufficed (without photos) and choir singing 'to remind us' all we've to say King now was a bit contrived i thought. And despite what he said he wont personally ever have to suffer with the cost of living problems will he so i wasnt over impressed. He did good enough as he must been nervous- his mother was 'a hard act to follow'- but not great in my opinion.

Galaxy Thu 29-Dec-22 11:24:47

That made me smile. Mumsnet often gets lots of horrified people saying but why arent they talking about prams?
I am involved in politics at a local level if that helps. I am not chancellor of the exchequer but didnt realise that was a requirement for expressing a viewpoint.

Why would you say that? Volver dear? He was wondering about all the wasted expertise on GN, although as Casdon says, he doesn’t know that GNs aren’t in politics.
Do you think many are? I don’t read of any GN claiming to be MPs -though to be fair, it’s not something I’d admit to either.

volver Thu 29-Dec-22 11:42:20

Course he was. 🤣

My DP had a look through GN posts the other week and thought the same as your DH although he was having a laff at some of the bigheaded comments from know-it-alls.
Tbf you get those on every forum, they know how to do everything, have worked so they say in all kinds of high powered jobs and could run the country better than any politician.Since they will never have to put their money where their mouth is we will never know! What a loss to society.😂

I'm so glad that there are so many men available to have a good laugh at us and make comments about people they don't know. Wouldn't want us getting above our stations, that would be awful.

Thank goodness for the chaps, eh?

Galaxy Thu 29-Dec-22 13:26:31

A certain type of man is very uncomfortable with women talking as a group, bless them.

Absolutely Volver dear. You seem to be determined to be insulted on behalf of all GN, whether they’re insulted or not.
My DH wasn’t laughing, though he is over your recent posts.

volver Thu 29-Dec-22 13:34:29

I'm not insulted liebling.

But bemused that men like this still exist, but there you go. My father in law was like that. Glad to have provided your DH with a bit of amusement.

My DD’s have a laff at some comments on here as well.
It’s an equal opportunity forum.grin

JaneJudge Thu 29-Dec-22 13:38:05

I feel somewhat abandoned as my husband never asks what I am doing on the computer

volver Thu 29-Dec-22 13:38:53

The DDs can have a laugh if they want. So can the DPs or DHs.

But if posters don't see the absurdity of telling us that the men are laughing at us, then all is lost....

Oreo Thu 29-Dec-22 13:48:02

Am telling you that men and women will surely be amused by many comments on forums by bigheads and know-it-alls.
It’s the way of forums, available and very public. This isn’t a chat in Costa between old friends.

volver Thu 29-Dec-22 13:50:42

Oh, its definitely not that.

"laff" all you like. GNers love being told that the men and the young folks are laughing at us.

Galaxy Thu 29-Dec-22 13:50:45

I would mostly be laughing at people expressing their views about a forum via a third party.

JaneJudge Thu 29-Dec-22 13:53:00

you ought to hear what my cat just said about you all

volver Thu 29-Dec-22 14:07:43

Oh, meow 🙀 🐈

😉

Galaxy Thu 29-Dec-22 14:25:23

My puppy could have your cat anytime.

Zoejory Thu 29-Dec-22 14:26:12

I've never dreamt of showing Mr Jory this site. I doubt he'd be interested but it's nothing to do with him really.

Do you live near me, Galaxy?
I have a list of questions.
But can't seem to get any answers.
Help, please!!!

Of course there are probably a few men on this site too, even if it is called Gransnet.

DP has a couple of sites he likes, gardening and motorbikes and there are just as many unintentionally funny comments on those too. It’s forum life!

Chaitriona

I think the king is sincere. That he wants to be a head of state for all the people including people of all faiths. I think that he aspires to be a spiritual person. I noticed his high lighting of people working in the public services during this winter of public service strikes and of people volunteering to provide food for people who are hungry this winter. But he cannot escape the contradictions of his position. He is not a politician, is not supposed to be political, represents whatever government is in power whatever their policies are and is immensely personally privileged and in his role cannot but represent and maintain the view that an unequal society is right and proper. It is not a good thing that people depend on charity to feed themselves and their families. It is shameful. We should ensure that everybody is fed through our collective efforts as a people through the instrument of our democratic institutions. That is what the welfare state was. It is what our generation was lucky enough to be brought up in. And what generations of ordinary British people before us fought and sacrificed to create.

Really good comments 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
