What would you like for Christmas?

Have you been asked this question? I never know what to say, but once - just once - I committed myself to: 'I'd love a bird table', I can't remember what I did receive, but it wasn't a bird table and I still don't have one. Whatever I did receive, I'm sure it was equally acceptable and no doubt I still have it in a drawer or a box or a cupboard...whatever it was! So, have you ever answered this question and received something you really wanted or something you never knew you wanted, but was gratefully and gracefully accepted?

Peace. At home and The World.

World peace apart, we only give presents to immediate family and in early November ask everyone to circulate a 'wish list'. No one gets everything on their list, and sometimes we know something someone wants or would lov that hasn't made it to their wish list, but does mean that all gifts are things for which people are truly grateful.

DH ingnored my wish list and gave me my first Kindle many years ago and I couldn't live without it.

We give presents to sons and GCs and give each other……..nothing. We prefer it like that, and just get occasional treats for each other now and then, not presents. Have had disasters in the past 😱

I didn't know I would enjoy using a slow cooker until I was given one.

I once asked for paint and brushes for decorating. We had very little money and wanted to repaint the children's room. I listed the paint I wanted and the brushes but got none of it. 'Not really a present is it?' I was told. I don't remember what I actually got, I suspect the usual smellies.

My Mum used to ask for a big bag of multi purpose compost but no one ever bought it for her.

Now I’m the age she was then I know what she meant and really regret never buying it for her!

I want world peace as do many people. We dont buy each other gifts. I like to donate to local charities.

I asked DH for a specific perfume last year. I didn’t get it, so I bought it for myself.
What did he get me instead? I’ve no idea!

My grandfather “A nice cup of tea and a bit of peace and quiet”😁

Absolutely no thing, object. But yes Anno- our magnificent bird table bought before our move here- was smashed in a gale 2 years ago, and I just can't find one as big or nice as that one.

From my children just time spent together, nothing fancy at all.

To each other, a nice holiday we can share. The best present.

I'm at an age where I need to start getting rid of things so I had to say to my husband and daughter, no more ornaments or jewellery please. To be honest I really don't need anything. However, my daughter in particular loves buying presents and gets more enjoyment out of watching people open theirs than the ones she receives, so I don't want to say don't buy me anything. Therefore, desperately trying to think of something as she's starting to nag. I have a birthday just before Christmas too which makes it even more difficult. Any ideas?

I think peace in the world is a given isn't it?

For me, yet another handbag would be nice. I love handbags.

Dare I say it but momentarily a different family..?
They do annoy me occasionally and at different times but recently it seems they are all at odds with me and themselves together.
These dark ,dull days aren’t helping them or me.
However practically, I say when asked that I like luxury food that I wouldn’t buy for myself, fruit in brandy, very good chocolate biscuits.
Good quality coffee.
I do get it from my D.

Some pretty stationary or notecards?

Thank you, an idea

A couple of years ago my OH bought me 20 bags of mulch for the borders, which was on my short wish list! I was delighted. 😄

winterwhite Mon 18-Nov-24 17:44:11

We do lists, but it’s not uncommon for donors to go off-list. My present list is added to and subtracted from all year but I often end up buying most of it myself in January.
I struck lucky a few years ago when DH wandering aimlessly around town the day before Christmas Eve bumped into a friend brandishing an eye-catching Jo Malone bag. He hurried off and I’ve had Jo Malone scent under the tree ever since.

When I was young, my mum used to say’ two good little girls’, meaning me and my sister, especially if we had been playing up!

If asked this year, I would like a spectacle chain, as I am always misplacing my glasses.

I would like a fancy bejewelled one, the sort Dane Edna would use.

CanadianGran Mon 18-Nov-24 18:02:58

I'm curious about the bird table; what is it? I'm picturing a table for a birdcage to sit on, or a table decorated with birds?

Dottydots Mon 18-Nov-24 18:27:01

No more handbags please. I took six to a charity shop recently. (Only cheaper ones I bought for myself.)

Katyj Mon 18-Nov-24 18:35:08

Last year I asked for a beauty hamper I’d seen at M&S I only told one son, but received the same from them both suspect they’d been asking each other what to get 🤣

A bird bath and an insect hotel were on my wish list for 4 or 5 years. Two of my children finally took the hint and bought them for me. The hotel is 5 years old and still used by insects every year, and a variety of birds come to drink or bathe in the bath.
