When I was younger, we never went far, up the coast, so when I was older and could save I wanted to go to places that the culture was really different. We went to The Gambia, and we took pencils and rulers and things for the school, we also had a boat ride out to a tiny village, I have not got the photos to hand now, but Everyone had to pay to go in this village, the village head sat in a chair, and you had to put this money in her hand think it was about £10 each, and the shock horror when I went into one of the homes, and in grandmas room was a bed with palm leaves for a mattress, a few leaves on the floor, for a carpetand all her possesions a sewing machine, no cupboards or wardrobes for clothes nothing, then I went to the kitchen, a little fire in the middle of the floor with a couple of chickens running round, a woman was washing rice in a bowl of filthy water, her hands were so dirty, so I looked for a cooker or oven, plates, there was nothing. The shower was makeshift and there was no towels on the line drying, but a yellow old oil container with another part that they filled with cold water to wash your hair with No soap and when I showed friends, of pictures they all said, the same thing about the shock horror on my face. on the line drying, there were clothes on the washing lines but not very clean. No electric in the village at all, and then I thought where does all that money go trips every day from holiday makes for 2 weeks, then another place was chosen to visit for 2 weeks.. It was the same with the school, many people took pencils crayons and things to the school and again money donations were asked for as you went in, but still the children had no pencils and crayons Where did it all go . When I returned home, it was still troubling me, so I did some collections from my friends and family bought, pencils, sharpeners, rulers, crayons, balloons, and sent them every week for 6 weeks, and I thought I have done my bit. It was very similar in Marracheh we were took round the old side, no sanitation, no money or food, it was awful then the holiday side which is booming with holiday makers, you try and take a photo in the square, you have the men coming up to you telling you that you had to pay to take a photo. This is why I like to visit the different places to see how the half live, we are so well off in this country compared to other countries.
