Hansel and Gretel - a frightening tale but a great ending.

Glimble Tue 01-Oct-19 18:09:26

Goldilocks and the three bears. I had a book with wonderful illustrations in it and I can clearly see in my mind the picture of Goldilocks sitting on the floor after the littlest chair gave way.

The Ugly Duckling - because we loved singing the Danny Kaye song at the end of the story.

Hans Christian Andersen's Thumberlina. I loved the film and
still remember the words to the song after more than 50 years.

Hansel and Gretel as I have a sweet tooth and also it is full of exciting mystery.

devonlady Tue 01-Oct-19 19:25:34

It had to be Rapunzel - I envied her her beautiful long blonde hair (I was brunette with hair to my waist - my mum never let it go beyond my waist)

Lindymady Tue 01-Oct-19 19:32:19

wotsitdooda Tue 01-Oct-19 20:17:03

I loved the magic porridge pot, the idea of the pot just growing and growing like some amorphous blob and taking over the town just held some morbid fascination for me; death by porridge!

blahblahblah1 Tue 01-Oct-19 20:23:35

Hansel and Gretel. A house made of sweets!

babyroo Tue 01-Oct-19 20:26:42

The Tinderbox.
I loved the way a poor soldier was able to improve his life through the striking of the tinderbox. Finding true love and saving his life. I was a bit scared by the three dogs with their big eyes, but they seemed to be the soldier's friends. Magical. I wanted a tinderbox, even though I wasn't too sure what one was, at my young age.

Rumplestiltskin has it all
Curse on the baby
Insane challenges
A spinning wheel
Unimaginable pain of the pricked finger
A ridiculously hard riddle
Horrifying

Angell74 Tue 01-Oct-19 21:24:00

My Mum used to tell a version of Little Red Riding Hood where she killed the wolf herself with an axe. I liked that story best - faint hearted princesses were never my thing.

Jack & the Beanstalk, with the goose that laid the golden egg. We used to keep chickens in the early 50s,and it was my job to look after them, and collect the eggs everyday. As they were free to roam around the yard you would often find eggs in the grass or under bushes etc.Only one day guess what I found, but bear in mind I was only about 4 or 5 years at the time, with a vivid imagination, a Golden egg under the bushes. In my haste to run back & show mum what I had found,I left the gate open,& the chickens took this opportunity to stroll out & devour the lettuces & peas on the vegetable plot.Back to the golden egg,mum just smiled & said lucky you, keep it & you will never go broke. Fast forward 65 years I still have the egg, only some of the golden paint has worn away, showing the China egg underneath.Yes dad had painted a china laying egg golden.I was completely & utterly fooled.

My favourite fairy tale The Three Little Pigs because it shows that a bit of hard work and cunning can beat bad things.
