Excuses

The excuses on here for going out are increasing again. No hair dressers this time, but exercise and dogs.

What is WRONG with people?

GracesGranMK3 Sun 05-Apr-20 15:50:57

It's not the government I am disagreeing with GagaJo so less of your "straw men" lies, please. I am just commenting on the difficulty in discussing with illogical people.

Perhaps though, you now think you are the government as that is the only thing that would make sense of you suggesting I don't agree with them.

GagaJo Sun 05-Apr-20 15:54:41

Grocery shopping, obviously, is unavoidable growstuff. No two ways around it.

While I DO feel very sorry for my GS, I know that I'm doing the best thing, keeping him in. Better healthy, than risking him coming into contact with others. Better having granny alive than risking going out and losing her.

A moot point, GGMK3, is discussion that is hypothetical. The disagreement we have about total lockdown is moot because it looks very much as if that is where the government is heading as per Matt Hancock therefore rendering any discussion pointless.

GagaJo Sun 05-Apr-20 15:57:00

I'm sure 3 weeks ago, when my family went into lockdown, you thought I was illogical and reactionary. But in fact, our family response was based on empirical evidence. China. Italy. Spain. HARDLY a straw man. Blimey. The world is on fire and you think it's hypothetical?

GracesGranMK3 Sun 05-Apr-20 16:05:38

I know what a moot point is GagaJo. I was asking you what you were referring to as "moot". I am happy to explain these things but it is getting tiresome. That we have total lockdown at the moment is not moot. We do not have one, that is an inarguable fact.

You could make out a case that we should move towards one. That would be moot. Otherwise, it's just you insisting they do what you want them to do.

GagaJo Sun 05-Apr-20 16:08:06

OK GGMK3, I'm bored now. Over and out.

GracesGranMK3 Sun 05-Apr-20 16:10:48

I didn't even consider your family GagaJo; why would I? You chose that. It was personal.

What you are suggesting in this post is that everyone is somehow at fault if, while sticking to the government rules, they do not do what you think they should.

There is no argument in that sort of post; it is just irrelevant to anyone but you.

Buffybee Sun 05-Apr-20 16:11:23

Going out to exercise either alone or with one other member of your household or walking your dog, is not an excuse to go out.
The Government have told us that an hour of exercise a day, as long as you are free from infection , is not only allowed but encouraged for the good of our health.
As long as people avoid each other on these walks by a good few metres, there is no problem.
Why are you so angry?

GracesGranMK3 Sun 05-Apr-20 16:12:32

I was bored many posts ago but I was too sorry for you to stop. You seem to have some real issues and I am sorry you have to cope with that.

Lisagran Sun 05-Apr-20 16:13:15

Can your daughter and grandson not go out for a walk GagaJo ?

AGAA4 Sun 05-Apr-20 16:18:20

Matt Hancock has warned that there may be a total lockdown meaning no outside exercise if people don't stick to the rules.

I went to my usual place to walk at 8am this morning. Usually it is deserted at that time but today it was busy. I understand that people want to walk their dogs and not blaming them at all but social distancing was very difficult with the amount of people who came.

I think this is the problem. So few places in the countryside are available now that everyone flocks to those that are. I don't think people are being irresponsible. You actually don't know till you get there how many people have come.

This used to be a very quiet place I dread to think how busy it is now as I have seen a lot of people passing my house on their way there.

grannysyb Sun 05-Apr-20 16:33:30

I have been out today, in the car to my allotment to water and then to the butcher where I stocked up. I used to have dogs and I would definitely have taken them out. Its absurd to say that it's an excuse. The government have said that we are allowed to walk dogs , have a walk for exercise and go to our allotments. No one is forcing you out, if you don't want to that's your choice, but don't tell the rest of us that we are wrong.

Chewbacca Sun 05-Apr-20 16:37:16

GGMK3 nailed it.

Calendargirl Sun 05-Apr-20 17:05:20

Does GagaJo think we should not go outside at all even in to our own gardens? She seems to want everyone to remain indoors the whole time. Until we are told otherwise, I shall go in to my garden, go for a walk if I want to, go to the supermarket and butchers if I need to.

Oopsminty Sun 05-Apr-20 17:06:52

Matt Hancock has said that tougher restrictions are not imminent

My dog will be happy

ginny Sun 05-Apr-20 17:31:37

I don’t see what is so difficult to understand.
We can go out to buy food and
we can exercise outside , within our own neighbourhood , keeping the rules of social distancin

We cannot go to other people’s homes be they relatives or friends.

Sunbathing, picnics and chatting with friends does not count as exercise.

Doorstop Sun 05-Apr-20 17:53:38

People still coming and going here, couple opposite having visitors and hugging each other. Have only been out three times, once to collect DH medication, once for a walk but as we live in built up area got fed up with dodging other people and once to drop off provisions to DD as she is vulnerable and could not get an online shop. Fed up with all the neighbours not taking it seriously.

Smileless2012 Sun 05-Apr-20 17:57:00

Exactly ginny. I was relieved that exercising outside hasn't been banned and can only hope that most stupid and irresponsible will stop breaking the rules.

MawB Sun 05-Apr-20 20:18:17

I wasn’t aware Gagajo’s family had gone into lockdown but if I had been it would IMO have possibly been because she had flown back from Switzerland, just beating a ban on travel and apparently just over the border from N Italy and was, furthermore, complaining of a cough

Callistemon Sun 05-Apr-20 20:58:01

I am not going out because I have had The Letter.

However, if I was a fit and healthy under-70 with a dog I would go for a walk, observing all the rules. If I was a fit and healthy young person with a child I would take them on a Bear Hunt, observing all the rules.

I think that yes, Gagajo may be in isolation, very sensibly, as she has flown back from overseas and did not feel well.

I hope you can take your DGS out for a little walk soon, Gagjo, perhaps on reins which could be a good idea at the moment?

Callistemon Sun 05-Apr-20 21:05:48

13:47:26 notanan
Exactly

Gagajo do you not have a garden that your DGS can play in?
If not, a walk would be permitted as long as you do not go near anyone else. You could look for teddy bears and rainbows.
He must be understanding why he can't go outside.

Callistemon Sun 05-Apr-20 21:07:20

Fudging autocorrect!
I hope ykwim

Callistemon Sun 05-Apr-20 21:10:55

Starblaze a couple of people have run marathons in their small back gardens!

Oopsadaisy3 Sun 05-Apr-20 21:18:01

It seems that to ’keep granny alive’ the OP has locked her family indoors!
I too assumed that the OP was in lockdown because of her recent arrival in the U.K.
I will walk in the countryside, which luckily is outside my front door, for as long as we are able to, when we are told that we can’t go out then I will stay indoors.
Let’s be clear here, we are all indoors to give the NHS a breathing space, so that when we are infected there will (hopefully) be the medical equipment available that we will need to save our lives. This is a delay tactic, when we go out later in the year the virus will still be there and most people will be infected, we won’t be safe until a vaccination programme is in place.
To preserve our mental health we should go out for our daily walks until we are prevented from doing so by the Government.
Let’s hope that the numbers of idiots out in their numbers aren’t enough to make us all suffer.

Hetty58 Sun 05-Apr-20 21:37:34

GagaJo, you said 'If it isn’t passed from person to person, eventually, it’ll die down.' That is factually incorrect.

The whole point of isolation and social distancing is to just slow down the rate/number of infections - not to stop them. Our NHS would be unable to help so many people if we let it run riot.

The virus will continue to spread easily until about 80% of the population has had it. At that time, it will have a low chance of infecting new people - only then will it die down.

Therefore, isolation is slowing down the process.

Why question those going out for exercise? The dangerous virus spreaders are those who are going into shops. Of course, we can't ban shopping or people will starve. Why people have to go quite so often, I really cannot fathom.

Callistemon Sun 05-Apr-20 21:44:41

I am astonished that people were still allowed to take flights after disembarking from a cruise liner in Australia.

Planes must be a prime place for transmitting the virus.
