Having avoided the news, I am horrified to find the UK may well be the place with the most deaths. I don't find it helpful at all seeing a graph telling me its worse elsewhere.

It's all just fudging and juggling to avoid saying the government is a shambles.

FYI Spanish flu didn’t kill 10% of the world population. It was just over 1%. Still dreadful numbers but let’s not exaggerate.

Anyway, this is the 21st century we should have moved with the times. There's been no excuse whatsoever.

Ignoring the Cygnus findings was the first but not the only mistake. To save money they ignored results that we were unprepared for such a pandemic
Taking no heed of the findings despite SARS and MERS, both corona related, in the last few years, results were brushed under the carpet and we have to live, or die, with this. Shame on them and sadly we have not seen the last of this. I despair.

Reading through all that is terrifying! As we have lived it day to day we tend to forget what went before. We should have acted weeks ago - heartbreaking and so much more yet to come

This article dated 9 April suggests that 1000 people may have died in care homes, not included in the statistics. I don't understand why not. They are included in the French figures for instance.

Daisymae when the figures are given each day, it's made clear that the numbers are those who have died in hospital, There will always be delay with notification of deaths that occur outside hospital.

Yes, but care home deaths are not included in the total. This is wrong. I can't understand how we looked on in horror a month ago at what was happening in Italy and now we are in a similar predicament there seems to little reaction.

Care home deaths are not hospital deaths Daisymae. Deaths at home are not included either. Of course the totals are shocking, it's a very serious situation.

My neighbours son popping in.Another who finds any excuse to pop to the shops at least daily.The friends who 'accidentally 'bump into each other for a dog walk having driven there and thibk they are docisl distancing but drift closer and closer. The runner who wouldn't slow down and ran round a corner straight into me when I was out for my one walk a day.I am now in bed with symptoms and I've been sticking to the rules like glue.Many haven't. Too many British people have a sod you attitude sadly,so whilst the majority do all they can unecessary exposure to the virus continues.I would love to see any political party sort that one.

I have just seen the comments reported to Sky News from Prof John Ashton, former Regional director of Public Health England, with regard to number of deaths, who says that those dying could be double of what the public are being told.
This is because deaths in the community are not included "At the moment a lot of what is going on in these briefings is coming very close to lies. We need to be able to see the data and crawl over it and really see what's going on".

I suspect that when the worst of this is over, many will be very shocked at how things have been mismanaged here. I, too, can't believe the utter lack of reaction to the daily death toll, which is acknowledged to be woefully under-reported. The true figure for a recent day's tally of over 900 is estimated to be 1,600. It seems like people have gone into suspended animation or sleep, as if in a fairytale.

I don't know if I'll ever get rid of the image of the PM turning back on a walkabout to grasp the hand of a child, soon after boasting about how he was continuing to shake hands despite all advice to the contrary. Flouting the rules. But rules are for ordinary people... It was deeply disturbing, and obvious that he was very likely to get Covid-19 because of his behaviour.

Fortunately for him, he'll have had the equivalent of private medicine from "our NHS". His outcome might have been very different in a regional, under-funded and under-resourced hospital lacking a top lung specialist and team.

The idea that we are, in any possible sense, taking back any vestige of control of anything is...

Actually, words fail me. I could weep, weep, weep that we have wasted time and £billions in the last few years, which could have bought us true national health and safety now.

I've worked out that I might just get a place in ICU. This is the Covid-19 decision support tool. How many points would you get? If it's over 8, you really must take social distancing seriously.

It's not a question of he government OR the public. FWIW, I think it's both. The government made some appalling errors in planning and when it dithered about what do. It was too bothered about its image and damage to the economy to be decisive. It's still making empty promises and not being transparent. However, it seems there are also groups of the public who persist in flouting the rules, finding loopholes and excuses and thinking it's not about them. My theory is that Johnson naturally wants to be a "people pleaser" and doesn't want to be too hard on them, but he really needs to understand what leadership is about. Hopefully, he will now start leading by example, for starters.

I like the graphs. They are a useful tool to see how it is progressing. It’s also useful to see what countries are showing a similar trend. Just because greymar has a worried friend doesn’t give cause for those of us who prefer to see data this way to feel bad about it. It’s just a different way of viewing the data.

Yes absolutely - like all data it’s dependant on many variables. I just find it easier it to see it in pictorial form and thought it was a rather harsh response to someone else finding them useful.
