National Lockdown to be announced next week?

Apologies if there’s already a thread on this but the story is apparently in Saturday’s Times and on Sky. Press briefing Monday, lockdown to start Wednesday with schools and universities staying openness. To last until December. Why is this being leaked on a Friday night? Confusion and chaos now for the weekend.

Good posts, from the heart, maddyone.
Just to add France has also kept schools open in its current lockdown.

And as suzie correctly says, schools must be given proper consideration and it would certainly be a good idea for children to wear masks. But to close them is just plain wrong, our children deserve more than that from us.

Well it’s already happening, and if it saves lives I’m all for it.

It takes a lot of courage to change course, and I have great admiration for Boris Johnson in following the advice of experts.

crissy I was a teacher and several of my nieces are teachers, and yes I would want schools open. My niece, who is a teacher and who I spoke to this morning, agrees. We cannot continue to discriminate against our children’s right for education in favour of older people. What about children who live in a high rise flat in a single parent family, with no computer to help them learn, no social contact, and their emotional needs not met? And with no car so they are restricted to the city centre unable to visit the coast or countryside for exercise! I worked in an area where children lived like that, but they had a stimulating and safe environment every day, their school!

And crissy before you jump down my throat again, my daughter is a doctor who worked all through the last lockdown, at the beginning with insufficient PPE. Her husband is also a doctor who does additional shifts at the Covid Hub. Last time I was beside myself with worry, as many regular posters on here well know. I was afraid that their six year old twins and little three year old would still have two parents at the end of it all. Working in a school is a piece of cake compared with that, so I suggest you think a bit more carefully before you post next time.

If you look back at previous pandemics, they have 3 waves. The second is always the worst. The third one is quite mild and shortlived.
Most pandemics have gone after 2 years. The virus mutates and becomes a less harmful seasonal virus. Spanish flu became swine flu, Hong Kong flu became bird flu. A coronavirus is not flu, but most pandemics work in the same way. We got the transmission down by summer and we can do again. We just need to be patient for the next month. I think a virus will be available soon.

So, apart from pubs and gyms being closed what has changed? Oh and people being told to work from home if they can which they were doing anyway till Johnson told them to go back to work.

I do want the schools and the staff in them to be given proper consideration though - I think for example, older pupils should now be wearing masks in the classroom.

I want schools open. My daughter is a secondary school teacher.

A friend's husband has been in hospital last 2 weeks, and she has not been allowed to visit at all. I am surprised, but delighted for you, that you have been able to visit. Which region? (my friend is in Kent and now London teaching hospital).

Macgran43 Sat 31-Oct-20 18:51:45

Last Lockdown my husband and I were together. Now he’s in hospital after a bad fall and I’m dreading that hospital visiting will stop.At the moment I can visit twice a week. He also has memory problems.

You wouldn't want schools open if your daughter is a teacher!!! She's been working her socks off all through this madness and is exhausted. She has a 4 year old child and husband is key worker.

We only know what has been deliberately leaked, so far.

Hello everybody! I missed everything, please tell me, what are the new restrictions, what were you talking about?

I agree.
Once and for all, a proper lockdown is our best chance at gaining a foothold.

The only thing I will say, before we know the details, is that schools must not close. Children need their education and their social and emotional needs met.

We will never get a break from the virus unless absolutely everything shuts down including schools.

MissAdventure Sat 31-Oct-20 18:05:05

I've got a huge tooth abscess, and an appointment in 2 weeks time.
I've been waiting to take my turn. Not sure what will happen about that now.

What's more important suziewoozie, other people's businesses or your own and family's personal health ?

Tier 4 for Liverpool ? It's in a bad way sad

No more £10 meals this time. What an insane idea that was !!

There was quite a lot of criticising on GN in August of those of us who didn’t feel comfortable or safe going out to eat - implying we didn’t want to help local businesses. I got quite fed up with it.

‘It’s supposed to be the UNITED Kingdom. And BoJo is supposed to be the PM of the U.K. Why didn’t he have the balls to say to Sturgeon “Hang on, I’m the boss, Mrs”?’

Looks like we already know what our esteemed leader will say as it’s all been said.
Best batten down the hatches. Ouch!

MissAdventure Sat 31-Oct-20 17:04:26

I'm amazed that the news is reporting how the lockdown will be played out, before the PM has officially said anything.
