1 since March population 7,500.

Deaths are registered in the area where the death took place, not the area where the person lived, so deaths that took place in hospital will be registered to that immediate area.
The hospital registrar will register the death.

You will only be seeing the COVID deaths that happened at home for your area. It wont tell you how many people who live in your area have died from COVID.

I know this from personal experience.

Those areas are tiny. I walk the dog every morning for an hour, starting in my ward (obviously!), through 2 more and touch another. Then back again.

Five in our area, over all months. One care home in that postcode.

One of those deaths may well be my friend's mother who died about a month ago. She did have Covid earlier this year, was in hospital for quite a while, but recovered, but didn't die from it.

Oh yes, at home or in a care home. Not just at home. Sorry.

You’ll see areas with a hospital have a very big green spot.

I think the MSOA areas vary greatly in size, is it according to population for census purposes?

It would take me more than a day to walk round ours!

Only seven in our area, which includes at least two nursing homes and a large elderly population.

Katek Sat 02-Jan-21 16:54:39

The population of our council ward is around 4500 and we have had only 2 deaths.

Weird, I checked today and Devon is now lower than Cornwall, who were tier 1?

I go to digital.nhs.U.K. Once a week to see how it is trending here. You can choose your postcode and a radius of that spot.

Thank you Peasblossom. I thought that might be the case. It could explain why there's only been one death in my area, which is a small area of about 10,000 people. There aren't any care homes or hospitals, whereas a neighbouring town with a high number of deaths has many care homes.

There are quite a few care homes in Torquay, growstuff.
I lived there for 50 years; I'm so glad I moved eastwards into the countryside.
Fascinating that you have done family research in this area. Maybe we are distant cousins! But a lot of my ancestors come from the Ugborough district, down near Plymouth.

My paternal grandmother's family lived in south Devon for generations. They were mainly fishermen from around Salcombe or tenant farmers from the various South Hams villages and hamlets. I once spent a few days in the area, driving around some of the places they had lived, so I know how sparsely populated the inland areas are. It's not the sort of place where Covid-19 would be rife.

I think it must be calculated differently in England to Wales. In Wales all the deaths are allocated against the MSOA by using the patient’s home address postcode. I checked my local general hospital postcode where I know there have been lots of Covid deaths, and it has very low numbers, so I know that to be the case. It also says everyday on the report from Public health Wales that the figures for Powys (where I live) are inaccurate, because of the number of deaths of Powys residents in English hospitals, with it being a border county.

quizqueen Sat 02-Jan-21 18:44:32

No deaths in my area at all and I don't know of anyone who has had covid either. I live on the south coast in a popular retirement area with lots of care homes too.

growstuff Sat 02-Jan-21 18:51:07

There is nowhere in the country now with no deaths. Even the Scottish islands and the Isles of Scilly now have had some. It could just be your local council ward/parish quizqueen. There's only been one death in my local area and I know who it was, but there have been a number of cases. The serious ones go to a hospital outside the area.

sharon103 Sat 02-Jan-21 18:51:12

There's 13 deaths and 26 cases in my area.

growstuff Sat 02-Jan-21 18:53:17

Crikey sharon! That's a high case fatality rate. I assume some cases haven't been reported or you have a hospital, where some people have died.

henetha Sun 03-Jan-21 12:30:38

My maternal grandmother, born in Ugborough, was one of 13 children, so just imagine how many distant cousins I must have. Maybe you are one of them! smile
Let's hope we will all be free from this nightmare soon.

Just to put minds at rest from areas being discussed here:
Breaking news ......
The latest weekly Covid-19 rankings which list every local authority in England show nine of the 11 areas in Devon and Cornwall had the lowest rates as 2020 ended - with Torbay the lowest in the whole country.
