Joan Bakewell is crowdfunding a legal challenge because the second dose of the vaccine is supposed to be given within 21 days and now it is up to 12 weeks which may not be safe.
Joan Bakewell legal challenge
I wouldn't be very happy with this wait because you are not protected. A nurse who had the vaccine in December has caught covid in January. I'm sure a lot of people will think they're protected after one dose which puts them in danger, whereas in reality we will have to continue to self isolate even after having the first dose.

My partner works on the front line in a large care-home setting She had her first jab of the Pfizer vaccine on December 20th, and then -like so many others- had her appointment for the second jab cancelled just 48 hrs before attending.
Whilst it is to be confirmed, it is widely believed that the vaccine to be rolled out in care homes will be of the Oxford type due to the greater flexibility regarding storage and transportation/timing issues.
My partner has no idea whether she will be eligible for this vaccine of if there is any question of compromise in having it (can one OD on vaccine).
As things stand, it would appear that my partner -and any other individual in the same situation- could be the last care-home workers in the UK to be fully vaccinated!
Any clarification offered on this element of the discussion over the Government's policy of the twelve week postponement would be greatfully received

The vaccine is being given with only one dose to begin with in order to give as many people as possible some protection and thus reduce hospital admissions., This is not a problem as far as I am concerned - it makes sense; and on the programme I listened to the other day scientists were endorsing this plan.

Is Joan Bakewell a virologist, an epidemiologist? No Ignore her.

M0nica Fri 15-Jan-21 20:21:51

The first vaccination gives up to 90% protection to all those receiving it. The second just increases that figure to 95%

As I said in a previous post Surely better 2 million people get one jab than 1 million get 2.

MissAdventure Fri 15-Jan-21 20:31:49

I can't find any info apart from one dose giving "good protection".
Also, do the different brands give more or less protection?

Casdon Fri 15-Jan-21 20:34:00

Essex2020 your partner won’t be eligible to receive the Astra-Zeneca vaccine because she doesn’t need it, she will get the second dose of the Pfizer vaccine after 12 weeks, and the residents will get their second dose of the Astra-Zeneca vaccine 12 weeks after their first.

janeainsworth Fri 15-Jan-21 20:35:17

The important thing is when lockdown will be lifted.
That isn’t going to happen until hospital admissions, deaths, and new infections fall dramatically from the present levels (I’m aware that new infections have .started to fall)
That’s not going to happen until as many people as possible have had their first dose.

Does Joan Bakewell really think it’s that important that a relatively small number of people have had their appointments changed? Seriously?

MissAdventure Fri 15-Jan-21 20:38:19

She is questioning the safety of a longer wait.

Casdon Fri 15-Jan-21 20:42:50

Partly MissAdventure, but also whether she should mix the vaccines, which the scientists don’t advise.
Care workers are in exactly the same position as everybody else in having to wait for 12 weeks, so her partner is no more disadvantaged?

MissAdventure Fri 15-Jan-21 20:45:49

I presume she is asking on behalf of those people.

Good on her, I say.
It's right to question things that are "done to us" without our expressed permission.

Casdon Fri 15-Jan-21 20:50:02

I don’t know, it sounded more personal, maybe essex2020 will confirm.

MissAdventure Fri 15-Jan-21 21:14:31

Her crowdfunding page explains her reasons, just to see if it's safe and legal.

I find it incredible that people get angry about their rights being impinged upon by lockdown, but accept a huge uturn regarding what is to be introduced into their bodies.

Casdon Fri 15-Jan-21 21:19:01

Are we at cross purposes, I was referring to the post from essex2020 above on this page, not the reason Joan Bakewell had launched the case?

MissAdventure Fri 15-Jan-21 21:20:22

Then we are definitely at cross purposes.. blush

MissAdventure Fri 15-Jan-21 21:22:53

With regard to the post by essex, his partner is doing well.

I've heard sod all about my vaccination (I'm also in Essex, and also work in care)

Casdon Fri 15-Jan-21 21:36:03

Easy to do, and I’m glad essex2020s partner is okay.

You should get your vaccination very soon now, where I am I know staff were registering through their own organisations and going to the mass vaccination centres, the vast majority have appointments now.
The care home residents vaccinations have started now here, but are taking a while to get through because there isn’t enough Astra-Zeneca vaccine to go round yet, we’ve been promised there will be more next week.

MissAdventure Fri 15-Jan-21 21:56:29

Well, I'm hoping Joan Bakewells lawyers have had some response before then, really.

Who is angry about lockdown MissA? confused

MissAdventure Fri 15-Jan-21 22:36:55

Plenty of comments right here on gransnet, if you want to trawl around and look.

Lots of people saying their mental health is suffering.
Even someone sending a message, telling another person off for breaking the rules.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 16-Jan-21 03:42:09

The ERG who run the country are demanding that lockdown be eased. Profit before health every time.

MissAdventure Sat 16-Jan-21 05:04:44

That's totally ridiculous!

Ah. In your earlier post you seemed to be suggesting that anyone who was happy to wait 12 weeks for their second dose and opposed Joan Bakewell’s application for Judicial Review, also thought that the lockdown restrictions were excessive.

It isn’t fair to lump them together like that.

WW2 I'm not sure if the ERG/CRG are that interested in the economy they just want some of the limelight.

They had it for years over Brexit and now they want in on Covid - they're just disrupters, trouble-makers and contrarians.

I doubt if any of them have a scientific background.

MissAdventure Sat 16-Jan-21 09:13:21

I'm not suggesting anything.

I'm just saying that I support what miss Bakewell is doing.

Callistemon Sat 16-Jan-21 10:08:26

I wonder if Ms Bakewell has read any of the scientific papers. She's not a virologist or even a scientist as far as I recollect.

I'm happy to wait longer for a 2nd vaccine as long as it means healthcare workers get theirs as a priority.
Although I'd be glad to know if the 1st vaccine is on its way as no-one round here has any idea when it may arrive.

Luckygirl Sat 16-Jan-21 11:05:41

Anything that puts one person off having the vaccine is a bad thing and impacts on all of us.

She should take up knitting and settle down quietly by the fire.
