With exemptions for those with second homes abroad who need to 'prepare them for rent'.

H1954 Tue 23-Mar-21 07:45:50

Alleluia! Minimise the risk, minimise the consequence!

Calendargirl Tue 23-Mar-21 07:48:44

Wrong date in title.

GagaJo Tue 23-Mar-21 08:03:51

My bad Calendargirl. Today isn't Monday. Time flies...

Really? I looked again but didn't see that.

Why is GN the only place I cant share links. Guardian today. Google second home exemption travel smile

BlueSky Tue 23-Mar-21 08:27:10

Only up to 30 June? We’ll go in July!

Looks like we’re not off to Ibiza then with my stepfather. At 88y and literally went nowhere apart from the shops last year he was so looking forward to a holiday - as he said ‘at my time of life ...’

Looking after the better off again! It should be a blanket ban on all travel abroad. The same should apply to entry into the UK with no exceptions unless quarantine is for all. Lorry drivers travelling to the UK should be able to stay in port then take other goods back across the channel, thus reducing risk to everyone.

The only exemptions should be for medical or care purposes NOT for property. It makes me angry when there is one law for the wealthy and another for everyone else.

I’m fed up of doing what I should be doing whilst others are exempt! We’ve been in various forms of lockdown for 9 months out of the last 12.

So what stops people just popping over to their second home saying they are getting it ready for the season? Do they have to prove bookings through a reputable agency?

Riverwalk Tue 23-Mar-21 08:44:11

Preparing second homes for rental seems a rather strange exemption.

Lillie Tue 23-Mar-21 08:48:13

It sure does Riverwalk. If you let a home abroad you would need someone there to look after it, to clean it and to do maintenance and gardening. So why can't the same people get the property readY?

GagaJo Tue 23-Mar-21 08:49:23

As azse said, for the wealthy again. So in theory I can't come home, because I don't have a 2nd home.

Why do you think the Guardian is calling it the 'Stanley Johnson Exemption'? That was his excuse for nipping over to Greece last summer. There was such an outburst of indignation that his son has clearly decided to forestall any objections this year.

Quite touching really, the way he looks after his old dad..

It’s the Stanley Johnson loophole!

Oops crossed posts Maizie

And put his brother in the House of Lords!

Such a family-minded man is our PM

That is a ridiculous exemption. What about all the people who have families abroad who they haven't seen since 2019. I'm sure others will come up with more reasons, there should be no exemptions.
There seems to be an obsession with foreign holidays, I expect its because they have not been possible for some time. I think there are far more important things on the priority list than holidays or should be.

In other circumstances, like in a banana republic, it would be called nepotism, wouldn't it? hmm

What about all the dream holidays organised by Children’s Wish and other charities, these holidays can make all the difference to the young folks/children and their siblings and parents. Fulfilling a last wish to see something, go somewhere.

We have been indoctrinated, we were told have the vaccine, it will be the way out of lockdown and restrictions.

I voted Conservative but I am deeply concerned about the erosion of our freedom.

dragonfly46 Tue 23-Mar-21 09:12:06

I think they should allow people to travel who have family abroad. They are more important than second homes.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 23-Mar-21 09:17:43

Thank you Dragonfly we are really missing our overseas family.

GagaJo Tue 23-Mar-21 09:21:37

The vaccine could be our way out GG13, but if the whole world doesn't get it, it doesn't heap travellers.

I am missing my family back in the UK too. But living is more important. Plus, I don't want to infect them either.
