Am I an ass?

My 37 yo daughter is having her 1st and only baby this spring. She gave me a list of vaccines today that I need to have before I can get close to the baby. I'm okay with all but one of them. Am I an ass because of how I feel? By the way I am the only person (including the father) that has been there every time she's upset during this pregnancy. Don't tell me that's my job because I raised her to an adult and my "job" does not have to continue passed that.

Is the baby going to be kept in solitary confinement is it not going to be in the company of anyone but the mother and grandmother.
No wonder our children have no natural immunity

Yes you are.

If this OP was from a tropical country I might be able to see some reason for this strange request. Rabies vaccine perhaps?

I was about to ask this.

Years ago my Dad alerted me to a report that there had been cases of adults contracting polio from recently vaccinated babies, through contact with urine when changing nappies.
I was able to have a polio booster at my GP surgery.

Good grief! I pity the midwife on duty when this baby puts in an appearance!

I am not kidding you folks. The vaccines include Tdap, latest flu, shingles, pneumonia, and of course Covid and boosters. I am not a never vaxer. And have had Covid two times and survived. I choose not to get the shot or boosters. I believe in natural immunity just as my mother did. By the way I offered to test multiple times while I was there helping through the birth and afterwards. Now she’s nut talking to me and my heart is broken.

Becksnana Sat 03-Feb-24 12:41:17

Flu, shingles, Tdap, pneumonia, Covid boosters.

Becksnana Sat 03-Feb-24 12:52:02

My daughter was fully vaccinated as a child. She said her doctor said it’s necessary and she will only do what the doctor says is ok. What happened to common sense? Who in their right mind would go near a baby when they are sick. Frankly even if I had taken the Covid shot I would still have tested before holding him. Everything I have read says it does not prevent Covid but only makes the symptoms less severe.

Callistemon21 Sat 03-Feb-24 12:58:07

Mandatory vaccinations are not required for midwives.

welbeck Sat 03-Feb-24 13:01:42

well, it seems you have made your choice.
and so has your daughter.
you cannot really complain of the consequences when you knew what the choice entailed.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 03-Feb-24 13:06:23

I wouldn’t let you anywhere near my child with your belief in ‘natural immunity’. In other words expose people to dangerous illnesses in the hope that they will catch them and acquire immunity. Getting covid the first time didn’t give you immunity, did it? Your choice - you get vaccinated or you don’t see your grandchild.

Callistemon21 Sat 03-Feb-24 13:13:28

I don't know how this mother-to-be is going to manage to insist that anyone who comes into contact with the baby must be vaccinated 🤔

Medical staff, health visitors, anyone else who might come near.

Perhaps she's going to live in a yurt, give birth alone and keep away from society.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 03-Feb-24 13:19:52

I suspect she’s saying this to her mother because she knows about her whacky beliefs, and potentially the mother will be in closer contact with the baby and for longer periods, even if she catches covid again. Here baby, have a dose of covid, you’ll get natural immunity (even though I didn’t).

Namsnanny Sat 03-Feb-24 13:23:36

I see it as a fait accompli, not a choice welbeck
But what ever it is Callistemon21 point is valid.

Babies dont get covid.

Cossy Sat 03-Feb-24 13:26:25

What vaccines?? Is this a joke or spam post??

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 03-Feb-24 13:29:56

That’s not so, Namsnanny. Babies are less likely to catch covid but they can, and do, catch it.

Cossy Sat 03-Feb-24 13:31:57

Ok so I’ve read the vaccines required. Many of us older folks have these as a matter of course. I wouldn’t have let you in our house if you refused your Covid vaccine. Flu changes each year, hence annual vaccines, pneumonia jabs are recommended every three years and for goodness sake we are ALL so lucky that live in a country that offers us all this protection. Without vaccines horrible diseases like Polio, Diptheria, TB would be commonplace here and we already have measles issues due to Mum’s refusing to vax their children.

It’s a complete No brainer to me, access to your grandchild = vaccines.

Namsnanny Sat 03-Feb-24 13:32:00

Sorry GShMum for quoting you, ignore me.

I should have thought before I posted.

I'm not up for a touche moment just now.

I was 'triggered' (such a namby pamby phrase) by calling the op's pov whacky
Have a good day👍🙂

rosie1959 Sat 03-Feb-24 13:32:01

I really can’t see what difference it makes regarding the Covid jab. As it doesn’t stop you getting it or passing it on.
Still seems very strange my children never had advice from drs on what vaccinations grandparents had received sounds very OTT.
Will she check the vaccination record of everyone who is in contact with the baby.

Cossy Sat 03-Feb-24 13:34:22

Babies can catch many things! When mine were little and both my daughters had chicken pox at 4 & 2 years our GP assured me my two week old son wouldn’t catch it as I was breastfeeding and he would have “natural immunity” 1 week later his spots appeared and he was quite poorly!

rosie1959 Sat 03-Feb-24 13:35:51

Like many grandparents I also hadn’t had the flu shingles or pneumonia vaccine I wasn’t old enough to be offered them

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 03-Feb-24 13:36:05

You too Namsnanny! 😊👍🏻

mummytummy Sat 03-Feb-24 13:41:28

I had to have a whooping cough booster, though it was a triple vaccination. Whooping cough, tetanus & diphtheria. Fully vaccinated as a child and I’ve had 5 covid vaccines and flu jab every year as I work with vulnerable people.

This is what we were all sent before my grandchild was born 😷
