Henrietta - I know just what you mean. 'Everlasting Love' ...I was 18 and in Nottingham. Not a good time for me, and hearing the song brings it all rushing back. But then, Mungo Jerry's 'In the Summertime' propels me into the hot summer of 1970 in London.....wonderful times! smile

If paradise was half as nice as heaven that you take me to, who needs paradise when I've got you ... Amen Corner. Other than that - Sook, you wrote my list. smile

Agree about GAS feetlebaum, not least Fred Astaire singing "Night and Day" to Ginger Rogers in The Gay Divorcee, and offering her a highly suggestive 'Cigarette?' as she sinks on to a seat at the end of the dance.

Not sure why cigarette is in blue. No link intended!

Bob Dylan's Sara. I find it so sad that they didn't stay together. How can you not still be in love with someone when a song like that has been written about your relationship sad. Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands. How can anyone write such beautiful words.

nightowl Tue 14-May-13 23:22:16

I share your feelings about Sara Tegan although rumour has it Bob was a bit of a s**t to her in reality. We have all known men who can talk the talk.... Perhaps not so eloquently as Bob but it comes down to actions in the end grin

Rich Hall sang a very funny song about Bob Dylan tonight [pointing out that he's been to see him 3 times recently and he's absolutely awful]. I've ordered some of those Lp sized picture frames so I can put them on the wall and change the album depending on what mood I'm in, so I went in the loft the other day to go through the old record collection. Found some I didn't know I had but didn't have others that I thought I did confused.I'm probably going to go into one of my indecisive frames of mind where I spend days just changing the albums [like moving flower pots round the garden]. Tried to find Sara on utube but it's been blocked and don't think it's on my Bob Dylan 'Best Of' cd sad. Will have a quick blast of 'Masters of War' instead wink...

I can't bear the song with the words 'Ground control to Major Tom' (not sure if this is the actual name)! Hear it is being re-released so I think the radio will have to be switched off for the next six months at least. Love the Kinks though or 'My Sweet Lord'
.

It's called Space Oddity, LizG, and it is warbled by David Bowie, which is a good reason for not liking it... I'm on your side!

Good Vibrations by the Beach Boys. I was living in Geneva when it was released - 1967 I think - and had a rather dashing boyfriend with a red MG convertible. We decided to drive along the dual carriageway to Lausanne with the top down on the car - not me. This record came on and it thrilled me, I thought it was wonderful. I felt very sophisticated in this cool car, handsome boyfriend, music and the sunshine - my long hair in a scarf - remember wearing scarves?
Every time I hear it I am back again in my youth, once it stops I'm back to being an old person of course, but it brings back a nice moment.

Constantly by Cliff Richard. I am not a Cliff fan, but it was the right song at the right time, so if ever I hear it - and I rarely do. I am 20 and heart broken again.

'Hello' by Lionel Richie. It was given to me by the Wonderful Man when he and I first got together and he had an uncharacteristically romantic moment.
'Have I told you lately that I love you' by Van Morrison - sung to me at my 50th birthday party by the WM and causing even my hard boiled mother to shed a tear.
'The first time ever I saw your face.' by Roberta Flack still brings me out in goose bumps as does 'Killing me softly'.

Reading through these reminded me of so many songs I had forgotten!
Last time we took the car to England I brought back a lot of records that my late husband and I had collected and I am listening to them all over again! Too many to mention but all sorts from Cliff, The Stones ,Gordon Lightfoot, Moody Blues to various "Folk" bands and individuals! A very varied and much loved collection!

How Deep is Your Love - Bee Gees
Every time you walk in the room - The Searchers
Halfway to Paradise - Billy Fury

As some of you might have gathered from my post's my parents didn't give me much; but one thing they did give me was a love of music.
When my Mum was drunk she would ask me ( well maybe not ask) LOL to sing " Here in my heart" by Al Martino.
For my Father I had to sing " Passing Srangers " at least they had good taste.
My family know that at my funeral they will have to play "Positivly forth street" by Dylan.
What always makes me want to dance "Wake me up before you go go" George Micheal.
To my OH it has to be " Your the best thing that ever happened to me" Gladys Knight.
The song " Is that all there is?" by Peggy Lee always reminds me of me.

I won a Popmaster MP3 player which I use when on the National Express visiting my GD. It makes me feel quite modern! I love most music so it's hard to choose but here are a few of my emotion stirring tracks....

Sad songs (to be avoided unless I need a good cry);

Slipping Through My Fingers, ABBA (for my long lost daughter)
Landslide, Stevie Nicks (ex OH)
Keep Forgetting We're Not In Love Anymore, Michael McDonald (ditto)

Feelgood Songs (work every time); wine

Do Anything You Wanna Do, Eddie & Hot Rods (I'm 17 & DJ-ing again!)
Rock DJ, Robbie Williams
Superstition, Stevie Wonder (and most of his other songs)
Radar Love, Golden Earring
Sugar Sugar, The Archies
Cecilia, Simon & Garfunkel
Help Me Rhonda, Beach Boys
Any upbeat Motown tracks

I could go on but it's past midnight and this nana needs mucho beauty sleep!moon

Roberta Flack - First time ever I saw your face
Elbow - One day a year like this

On the negative emotions side though, I have to turn the radio off every time that annoying Rihanna comes one with her Shine like a diamond ditty, Yuk!

Bridge over Troubled waters.
Where do you go to my lovely, Peter Starstead.
Long summers, lots of carefree teenage fun.

Flowerofthewest Sat 18-May-13 19:14:44

Oh YES Roberta Flack, The first time ever I saw your face! tears whenever I hear it. So much reminds me of falling in love with DH

specki4eyes Sat 18-May-13 19:36:28

Gimme Shelter by the Stones; Silver Stream - Fleetwood Mac; Lovin & Free - Kiki Dee; The Day before you Came - Abba......don't get me started, I'm busy!

feetlebaum Sun 19-May-13 11:30:57

Must agree 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' - the Roberta Flack version is a standout (she was a singing teacher - it showed).

It was written, and sung, by Ewan McColl (Kirsty's father) to his wife, Peggy Seeger - who also recorded it.

feetlebaum Sun 19-May-13 11:33:41

I've just remembered Nina Simone's version of 'Little Girl Blue' - that got to me! A fine arrangement, including (of all things) 'Good King Wenceslas'.
