Best way to burn calories?
(55 Posts)I sometimes go for a long walk after sunday breakfast
Or I walk to the local park and use the free exercise equipment.
I often see people jogging and I wonder if that would be a better and faster way to burn calories?
Also does anyone know roughly how long it takes to turn a flabby tummy into a fit toned six pack?
Back in 2011 I must have been doing something wrong cause I ended up in hospital for a week with tummy problems.
the pain was horrendous and Lasted for quite sometime Till it finally stopped.
I still do sit ups but I try not to over Do them now!
I'd Just Love to get my flabby tummy toned up and be able to finally wear shirts and t shirts without the unsightly overhang ; 0 (

Hoopla Hoop works well, my friends and I who are very young pensioners have bought Sports hoopla hoops and although we couldn't keep them up at first with practice we are all starting to get our waists back. We have even got together in the park when the weather is nice and probably look completely nuts but we laugh and enjoy it.
We on this forum are old enough to remember that Hula Hoops caused a lot of back strains and slipped discs the first time they were around, and that was to teenagers - not even "young pensioners" - so whatever your age, takingthemick, watch your back!
By the way, your name is such a giveaway that I feel I must report your post.
Neighbours recommend getting a dog -and walking it twice a day without fail!
If you are really looking forward to burn calories on fast mode, you need to go for brisk walking for 1 hour every day and skip all kinds of junk food and desserts.
Yes I agree but I just wish I enjoyed exercise, I do make myself go swimming once a week and try to do short walk daily but would much rather knit or do some painting in comfort, I don't seem to have any endorphins that others have or perhaps I'm just bit lazy
Arghh ...dislike exercise with a vengeance but always walk briskly for an hour a day. Not a great calorie burner though.
I think Zumba is the best-an hour burns 400cals according to MFP. And it's fun(ish).

Please be careful with a trampoline. I've had a hysterectomy for prolapse this year. Childbirth and menopause are the main culprits but high impact exercise such as trampolining is really bad for the pelvic floor. Jogging is not good for older joints either. I'm not trying to stop people exercising, just to be a little careful.
Cycling and it's a weight bearing ex recipe so joints are protected. My husband is a runner but always loses weight cycling and I have lost it as well flabby tummy...pilates will do the trick
Pushing Mrs. P around in a wheelchair today. After an hour I was knackered. Someone is going on a diet when we get home!
I go for a long walk after 6pm to loos weight it will definetly burn calories.But also control on diet also help alot in shedding off weight.
In general people overestimate the amount of exercise needed to lose weight. Even a zumba session of an hour will only burn off around 400 calories max, which is about the calorie content of an average muffin.
OP aim for an hour's activity a day, and eat less. My Fitness Pal is a great way of monitoring calories and activity, and is free to download (or used to be).
I don't think there is a 'best' way, only the way which is best for the individual. The more physical the exercise the more calories it will burn. The 'best'think is not to consume them in the first place.
Pilates doesn't use that many calories but is very good for mobility and toning up. Best to get a registered teacher with proper classes as often the ones at the gym are general and not specialist. Ours is so good (she is also a physio) that I am taller now than I have ever been. I think she has partially straightened my scoliosis.
I am in my 70s fairly tall but overweight, I never used to be but 40 years of office working and being a career caused it and eating a lot of sandwiches too. Also I don't really like exercise would rather paint and knit now I am alone. However I now have joint pains and am really trying to get fitter but it's no good if I can't keep it up, so I have given up bread and butter and eating fish, chicken,veg, fruit,yoghurt, nuts, porridge and few choc buttons, I do 30mins walk daily and 20 lengths swimming on Sunday's. Hopefully in time it will work
Ahah following a recent BBC programme and published research about the great effects of hot water on blood sugar levels and calories- I've treated myself to a blowup jacuzzi - and use it twice a day - hurrah.
Great for exercising my new knee and I do all sorts of exercises during the 30 mis sessions...
and of course cutting on portion size and carbs + sugar and doing other exercises, most knee related and cycling (indoors for now - although I feel almost ready to try on the flat outdoors now) and swimming too and walking.
I've also decided to continue physio at my own expense now I am no longer elegible post op - best money I've spent in a long time. The physio is really great, positive and motivating. Also bought several pieces of equipment she uses (balance board, and balance cushion and those wide elastic bands) - and make sure I use them daily.
Walking essential. Pilates will give you core strength and, if done regularly, will tighten stomach and bottom and, as a bonus, realign skeletal structure. Avoid fatty foods and sugar. Eat lighter in the evening. Allow at least 4 hours between end of meal & sleep. Other advice above very good. Beware of jogging/running! Reduce alcohol( beer belly is an apt reality)!

Hey Trevor47, the best way to burn calories is cycling, swimming, or by getting involved in any sport activity like football, basketball, etc. As you said you can't swim then try the different above activities.
The amount of effort to lose calories by excercise is out of all proportion. Why should I go for brisk walk in the cold and then have used up only 150 Calories.
I don't know any one who lost much weight that way. I only know that people who make money out of exercise etc are on the winning side.
I have even read that finshing a Sudoku puzzle also uses up 80 calories so I'll stick to doing them.
When DD1 took up marathon running she didn't loose any weight, neither did the dog, but then they were not fat.
Yet again I'm must disagree with you Margaret - sorry! It's not the one-off walk that's really useful it's those who build in walking/exercise/moving into their daily routine. I walked an average of 7,500 steps last week and burned over 11,000 kcals. That's about 3lbs I didn't put on had I just sat all day. Usually I walk more than that but the weathers's been foul.
It's the cumulative effect of exercise/moving that builds up calories burned, whether it's Bags sawing up logs or building dry stone walls or Mamie digging her allotment or others goimg to the gym, or swimming or just walking to the shops and back.
I don't actually count calories as I prefer to eat low carb but I'm still interested to read my weekly Fitbit report.
Exercise is not just about losing weight. It is also to feel fitter- tone muscles and improve stamina. It is also shown exercise improves mood. Good all round.
