So, the NHS says: "Research shows that walking 10,000 steps a day will significantly improve your health. Putting one foot in front of the other can build stamina, burn excess calories and give you a healthier heart."

It's not the easiest thing to get started with, but - having been doing it since January - my own experience is that it definitely gets easier (indeed addictive. At the start it was "agh, 10,000 steps". Now I'm more "only 12,000 steps today?!")

One thing I have also found is that - as with dieting and our weigh in threads - having somewhere to talk to other people doing (or trying) the same thing, to encourage each other or to have a good old moan when it's all getting a bit much is a very good thing indeed.

So here inspired by this thread from TerriBull and for all those who are doing it, trying it, would like to give it a go, is the great Gransnet 10,000 steps club.

(I'm at 6,451 so far today btw!)

Just over 10,000 for me yesterday so hoping I can keep it up ,finding I am really enjoying being more active and actually seem to have something missing from my day when I don't manage the 10,000.

Anya Sat 27-Sept-14 08:38:11

Keeping the same weight and not putting any on is not so easy as we get older these days. So that's good shysal

My legs must be getting tougher as nothing aches today.

shysal Sat 27-Sept-14 08:05:03

Back on track with 10,209 yesterday, after resting my hip for a couple of days. I wish my clothes felt looser, Anya ,my weight is static despite alternate day 'fasting' as a permanent way of life and doing 3-4 exercise classes a week.

Anya Fri 26-Sept-14 23:06:29

Not but but bit!

Anya Fri 26-Sept-14 23:06:02

9685 and my clothes feel a quite bit looser even though the scales say I still weigh the same. I'm not doing this to lose weight I'm just trying to keep active. It's definately getting easier....the actual walkng but smile

11799 for me today. I went out for two longish walks - I guess that is the best way to clock up the numbers! Busy tomorrow so don't think I will be doing so well.

Nanabelle Thu 25-Sept-14 23:51:45

Just under 8000 for me today and lots of those were ar 2year old gd's pace, while she pushed her buggy.

Anya Thu 25-Sept-14 22:51:22

9032 today.
You seem to consistently hit or exceed the 10,000 a day TerriBull envy

TerriBull Thu 25-Sept-14 22:06:28

10,143 for me today. Hope you are back to your normal self soon Chloe.

chloe1984 Thu 25-Sept-14 21:35:22

8128 for me today , tendon is improving so hopefully back to full strength soon.

shysal Thu 25-Sept-14 08:46:37

Only 7617 yesterday as I was resting my hip. It is much improved today, but will still go gently on it.

Nanabelle Wed 24-Sept-14 23:24:06

Hello again. I managed just 9271 today and that is just wandering around John Lewis and a 25 minute walk plus normal everyday walking around house. I wear my fitbit from when I get dressed to bedtime so every step counts! Hope to do a longer walk out tomorrow unless it rains again.

Anya Wed 24-Sept-14 23:08:48

7457 only - but had to wait in for The Gas Man, so that's my excuse.

chloe1984 Wed 24-Sept-14 21:01:32

5206 for me today hoping for a better total tomorrow.

TerriBull Wed 24-Sept-14 19:51:30

An enjoyable walk in the park this afternoon brought my count up to 11,330 for today.

Anya Wed 24-Sept-14 14:46:19

I'd rather face a herd of cows than risk cycling round here - that would take real courage hmm

Anya Wed 24-Sept-14 11:38:11

No cows anywhere around here so quite safe. I prefer to notch the steps up in easy stages such as the walk to school (2500) to the shops and back (3500-4500 depending on route and shops) and as that leaves me short I am forced to walk to the sweet shop off licence paper shop of an evening.

jings I can but hope

Though the impetus for me to do this was the big 50. I do have a cousin who is 79 and puts me to shame though - let;s hope some of the genes came my way

tanith Wed 24-Sept-14 10:31:07

Surprised myself and did 9186 yesterday and managed to drag OH out for a long walk to Mr.T's now its raining today so who knows how few it will be..

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 24-Sept-14 10:30:39

Cari, you inhabit a different world. smile But I hope you keep it up into your seventies.

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 24-Sept-14 10:28:15

Mr Ocado takes away a lot of my incentive.

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 24-Sept-14 10:27:35

Btw, I don't drive and I hate buses. So, if I'm to get outside of the garden..... (and I suppose one must. Occasionally)

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 24-Sept-14 10:24:57

At the moment I am staying on an estate (hol cottage) near Monmouth. So our walks are done in the lovely countryside. Cows are worrying. I salute you on your extraordinary courage. Bullocks can actually chase! shock

At home, I might walk to local shops (about 3 miles round trip). Sometimes (rarely these days)to town, perhaps 5 miles round trip.

At the end of it I feel knackered.

Much prefer my bike. smile

TerriBull Wed 24-Sept-14 10:23:50

jingle, I've just changed my habits, I'm driving less and walking more. I walk to the shops pretty much every day. 30 minute round trip in one direction, 1 hour round trip in another direction, buy fewer things. Only use the car for big food shops now. If I do some browsing at the shops, I can clock up anything from 5,000 to 7,000 steps. In addition I usually have to do a 20 minute walk in the afternoon, or longer if I go to a park maybe, plus walking around the house and sometimes doing unnecessary trips up and down stairs. It's very boring I know, but I look at everything as a steps opportunity now.

The reason I do it, I have a friend, only about 7 years older than me who seems to find it too much of an effort to actually get out to the kerb to get in her car, if she can't park right outside wherever she is going, she wont go. She doesn't have a disability, she just seems to think once you get to a certain age, only mid 60s in her case, using her legs is a thing of the past.

I'm not a super sporty person I might add, I have to push myself, I'm happiest sitting on the sofa!

For me - walk the school run (if that makes sense) - a mile each way. Get off the tube three stops early when time allows on work days (2.5/3 miles depending on route) Walk a couple of tube stops in the evening (about a mile) and then exercise classes on days off plus walking back from gym (about 2.5 miles) and then - again when time allows - walking everywhere else within reason rather than driving or tubing. Sometimes in the evenings with friends we walk for an hour. Eat. Then walk home - so busy gassing barely notice the steps. I also find a good Tesco shop clocks up more than you'd think if you slalom all the aisle grin

So basically various combinations of the above usually does the trick

Has definitely become a habit now - more easily than I thought it would
