So, the NHS says: "Research shows that walking 10,000 steps a day will significantly improve your health. Putting one foot in front of the other can build stamina, burn excess calories and give you a healthier heart."

It's not the easiest thing to get started with, but - having been doing it since January - my own experience is that it definitely gets easier (indeed addictive. At the start it was "agh, 10,000 steps". Now I'm more "only 12,000 steps today?!")

One thing I have also found is that - as with dieting and our weigh in threads - having somewhere to talk to other people doing (or trying) the same thing, to encourage each other or to have a good old moan when it's all getting a bit much is a very good thing indeed.

So here inspired by this thread from TerriBull and for all those who are doing it, trying it, would like to give it a go, is the great Gransnet 10,000 steps club.

(I'm at 6,451 so far today btw!)

I think I totalled around 13-14,000 yesterday. I can't tell you exactly because my pedometer is drying out after being dropped in the cats' water bowl! blush I have removed the battery and put it in the airing cupboard. This has worked in the past with a mobile phone , so hope it will work again soon.
Congratulations Iam64! Hope your feet are recovering.

On, dear shysal . How is your pedometer this morning?

Managed 11869 yesterday. It it was a bit strange as RunKeeper on my phone says I had walked a couple of miles more than the pedometer. RunKeeper works on GPS but the pedometer on movements and is set to my shortish stride. I can only think that as I was walking with my husband I was taking bigger strides. Will test that out sometime.

shysal Mon 15-Sept-14 12:11:45

Hooray! My pedometer is fit and well again. It was a pain having to go through the set-up once more, but it's all done.
I have now sewn little pockets into my exercise trousers, so an hour's class adds about 4,000 for the active part of Legs, Bums, Tums ,or 6,000 for Body Attack.

All time personal best for me 17507 not sure I will be able to move from this hotel room to the dining room as my feet are throbbing!

shysal Mon 15-Sept-14 18:01:29

Amazing, Chloe, you deserve a slap-up Hotel dinner after that - with no guilt!

TerriBull Mon 15-Sept-14 19:58:54

Just topped the 10,000 mark it's 8 pm and my pedometer reads 10,104, might do a few more before bedtime but probably not many.

TerriBull Mon 15-Sept-14 20:00:19

Fantastic result Chloe I don't think I've ever done that many since I left double figures!

Still a bit hobbly/strapped up and not doing classes. Ok on the flat most of the time, stairs not so good. Still managing to hit the target just about but missing the gym. And I never, ever, ever, ever thought I would say that!

MrsPickle I have done that - but there are sooo many DVDs! I also see she's American. Are the DVDs compatible with players in the UK, and which would be best for a beginner (ie completely unfit!) I don't want to spend £20 on a DVD which I can't use or is totally unsuitable for a novice, so would welcome advice, please flowers grin

I mean Lesley Sansome, by the way - your original post about the exercise routine!
