So, the NHS says: "Research shows that walking 10,000 steps a day will significantly improve your health. Putting one foot in front of the other can build stamina, burn excess calories and give you a healthier heart."

It's not the easiest thing to get started with, but - having been doing it since January - my own experience is that it definitely gets easier (indeed addictive. At the start it was "agh, 10,000 steps". Now I'm more "only 12,000 steps today?!")

One thing I have also found is that - as with dieting and our weigh in threads - having somewhere to talk to other people doing (or trying) the same thing, to encourage each other or to have a good old moan when it's all getting a bit much is a very good thing indeed.

So here inspired by this thread from TerriBull and for all those who are doing it, trying it, would like to give it a go, is the great Gransnet 10,000 steps club.

(I'm at 6,451 so far today btw!)

gringringrin I didn't realise Grace was her dog shysal. I don't mind at all but I was worried about usurping someone's name.

The pedometer looks good. It just needs to count steps at this point really.

Iam64 I don't know about three hours stripping wallpaper counting as steps - it deserves a medal in my book. smile

Thankyou so much Gracesgran - I did feel rather heroic. Today I've done 5,000 so far. As I worked (sitting down) all morning, I'm content to have managed 5,000 and am now sitting down, thinking I may have a glass of wine at 6pm grin

11,116, didn't think I'd get to 10,000 this morning felt very sluggish so quite pleased with final result.

chloe1984 Thu 11-Sept-14 21:02:39

12018 for me today really pleased as have been feeling a bit low but forced myself out this morning and felt better the longer I was out walking. So onward and upward.

9093 for me yesterday but it was the last day of my holiday and we were driving around quite a bit. Back home next week and plan to walk twice a day. Hope the weather stays nice!

shysal Fri 12-Sept-14 08:30:31

10,814 for me yesterday. Had plenty of time to walk so should have done more, but couldn't get my a*se into gear until late afternoon!

TerriBull Fri 12-Sept-14 20:16:44

11,091 at 8.15 pm. I'm won't be moving a lot more today.

Do I sense that, like for me, the novelty is wearing off a bit for some of us? It seems more of a chore these days. I had to force myself to top up my total to 10,289 yesterday. Coming on here keeps me going I think.

Versavisa Sat 13-Sept-14 08:48:58

10,070 yesterday. Had a lovely walk as we went to see The Tour Of Britain pass through the area. Not as exciting as the Tour De France but still worth seeing.

Yes, I feel that logging progress (or otherwise!) here is encouraging me to persevere. Without this I might not be so motivated, so keep it up everyone and let's see your results.

My aim is to get to 10k everyday for a week. But that seems a long way off at the moment!

Gracesgran Sat 13-Sept-14 09:14:16

Interesting to read that logging your progress has helped Versavisa. I have got as far as ordering my pedometer! I hope it will be a fast delivery so I can start next week as my base week, recording - in my diary not for all to see as I think the numbers will be a bit dire -my normal days counts.

Iam64 Sat 13-Sept-14 09:27:57

9,800 yesterday, but my feet ache as a result. Onwards and upwards grin

TerriBull Sat 13-Sept-14 09:34:39

Shysal, it can be a chore feeling very sluggish at the moment hoping a walk will sort me out. Yes I agree logging steps here does keep the momentum going.

It's funny how one day you can wake up with a real spring on your step and other days it's an effort to put one foot in front of the other, I don't know whether that's just me or others feel like it too.

Versavisa Sat 13-Sept-14 10:06:50

Ive also got a chart on the fridge which I find helps me too, but l do agree that some days 10,000 steps may as well be a walk to the moon as far as my energy is concerned.

chloe1984 Sat 13-Sept-14 10:11:34

10023 for me yesterday can only agree that sometimes my motivation is at rock bottom doesn't take a lot for me to blow the whole day and sit and read whilst eating everything in sight. Logging in each day keeps me from giving it up altogether. With the colder weather approaching I know I need to keep motivated otherwise I will sit huddled in several jumpers all day every day moaning about the cold and how fat I am getting. So will keep on keeping on.

Versavisa Sat 13-Sept-14 10:19:10

chloe you must be using me as your role model!

Iam64 Sun 14-Sept-14 08:41:50

9,850 on Saturday - here's hoping those tight jeans fit slightly better if I'm able to maintain these increased levels of walking. I used to do 12,000 with no problems, but then, I was a younger woman…..

chloe1984 Sun 14-Sept-14 09:33:03

Only 9712 for me yesterday am aiming for a longish walk later but am away for a few days next week hotel dining rooms always a risk. Versa I am happy to know that I am not alone and will happily have you as a role model we can lead the way together grin

TerriBull Sun 14-Sept-14 09:44:59

10,116 for yesterday agree with others, some days it's a real effort. Not sure what today will bring having granddaughter later so probably can't inflict too long a walk on her.

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Sun 14-Sept-14 10:29:51

Fell backwards down a rabbit hole (don't ask) and have gone from an average of 20,000 a day to being strapped up and hobbling. VERY frustrated!

Elegran Sun 14-Sept-14 10:43:30

Oh! My ears and whiskers! How painful. Was it the same leg you hurt last year?

Watch out for mad hatters, duchesses and stoned caterpillars when you next venture out.

Versavisa Sun 14-Sept-14 10:57:14

Only 2219 for me yesterday. But most of that was up and down the stepladder with the loppers so it was tiring, though not big on steps. Better total today expected.

Oops Cari, how painful. Take care and get others to bring you things, like cake cupcake and drink wine.

shysal Sun 14-Sept-14 10:58:43

How annoying for you Cari! Last autumn I over-extended a knee when my heel went down a pothole buried under leaves. It still aches all the time. These things are so easily done, with long lasting consequences. I hope you heal quickly.

I managed 13,919 steps yesterday and have already exceeded 10,000 today. Hoping to double it by the end of the day.

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Sun 14-Sept-14 11:22:29

So annoying - and no - not the one I dropped the laptop on a year ago!! Doesn't hurt that much but high impact sport is out so two classes missed already. Grumpy but don't want to make it worse and be out for even longer (not very good at being sensible)

Purpledaffodil Sun 14-Sept-14 20:12:45

I have not stopped today, went to buy paint for garden project, church stuff, assisting DH with aforementioned project etc etc. Just checked and I have done a measly2474 sad. I suppose it shows how important it is to actually walk, rather than just be "busy". Ah well, onwards and upwards! Going to Wisley tomorrow with a friend and we shall be leaving scorch marks on the paths as we notch up those steps (or maybe not shock coffee and cake will call loudly too!)

Purpledaffodil Sun 14-Sept-14 20:13:56

And flowers to you Cari, get mended soon!
