So, the NHS says: "Research shows that walking 10,000 steps a day will significantly improve your health. Putting one foot in front of the other can build stamina, burn excess calories and give you a healthier heart."

It's not the easiest thing to get started with, but - having been doing it since January - my own experience is that it definitely gets easier (indeed addictive. At the start it was "agh, 10,000 steps". Now I'm more "only 12,000 steps today?!")

One thing I have also found is that - as with dieting and our weigh in threads - having somewhere to talk to other people doing (or trying) the same thing, to encourage each other or to have a good old moan when it's all getting a bit much is a very good thing indeed.

So here inspired by this thread from TerriBull and for all those who are doing it, trying it, would like to give it a go, is the great Gransnet 10,000 steps club.

(I'm at 6,451 so far today btw!)

9032 today.
You seem to consistently hit or exceed the 10,000 a day TerriBull envy

Nanabelle Thu 25-Sept-14 23:51:45

Just under 8000 for me today and lots of those were ar 2year old gd's pace, while she pushed her buggy.

Nanabelle Fri 26-Sept-14 22:23:07

11799 for me today. I went out for two longish walks - I guess that is the best way to clock up the numbers! Busy tomorrow so don't think I will be doing so well.

Anya Fri 26-Sept-14 23:06:02

9685 and my clothes feel a quite bit looser even though the scales say I still weigh the same. I'm not doing this to lose weight I'm just trying to keep active. It's definately getting easier....the actual walkng but smile

Anya Fri 26-Sept-14 23:06:29

Not but but bit!

shysal Sat 27-Sept-14 08:05:03

Back on track with 10,209 yesterday, after resting my hip for a couple of days. I wish my clothes felt looser, Anya ,my weight is static despite alternate day 'fasting' as a permanent way of life and doing 3-4 exercise classes a week.

Anya Sat 27-Sept-14 08:38:11

Keeping the same weight and not putting any on is not so easy as we get older these days. So that's good shysal

My legs must be getting tougher as nothing aches today.

chloe1984 Sat 27-Sept-14 09:17:18

Just over 10,000 for me yesterday so hoping I can keep it up ,finding I am really enjoying being more active and actually seem to have something missing from my day when I don't manage the 10,000.

TerriBull Sat 27-Sept-14 09:36:20

10,300 for yesterday. I also feel there is something missing when I don't manage 10,000 although there are occasions when it isn't possible and it does require a certain amount of planning to achieve that goal.

TerriBull Sat 27-Sept-14 20:38:22

I'm the last poster so I can see I'm better than yesterday, just! 10,347. A long walk this morning and a trip to a garden centre this afternoon which clocked up a further 3,000 to bring me up to my total.

chloe1984 Sat 27-Sept-14 20:42:02

Not good for me today only 7734 as my foot or tendon seems to have relapsed but another day tomorrow when I will try to improve

Anya Sat 27-Sept-14 23:08:36

You've all done better than me again' even those with sporting injuries. I only managed a paltry 7446 today.

Purpledaffodil Sun 28-Sept-14 19:21:53

First time since starting this I managed over 10000. 12585 to be precise. DD and I circumnavigated Virginia Water this afternoon with 4 year old GS and scooter so speed slowish. Nevertheless....
Lovely walking place at this time of year but very busy at weekends and possibly a bit quiet for a solitary walk in the week. Anyone fancy a GN steps club meetup?

chloe1984 Sun 28-Sept-14 19:44:35

Well donepurpledaffodil what a target! only 7260 for me but feel that my tendon thing is getting a little better. Happy to consider a meet up but not sure there are many members from Suffolk/Norfolk but may be surprised.

TerriBull Sun 28-Sept-14 20:41:57

Didn't quite make it today, had 4 year old granddaughter most of the day and she bought first school reading book with her so spent a lot of the day practicing letters and sounds. Beautiful day however, did get outside some of the time but just didn't walk that much.

Nanabelle Mon 29-Sept-14 00:29:25

TerriBull, I bet she was so pleased to share her book with you. A love of books is a great gift and to be able to share a book with grandma even better.
I have had a sitting down day today and only clocked up about 6,000. oh dear. Well done the rest of you - hope we have a good week ahead.

shysal Mon 29-Sept-14 08:32:36

Purple, Virginia Water sound wonderful, wish I lived closer.
On Saturday I forgot to complete my quota, so only achieved 6129, but did lots of gardening. Made up for it yesterday with 18,345.

Purpledaffodil Mon 29-Sept-14 13:16:30

How did you manage that Shysal ? That is very impressive! I spent a couple of hours walking round Kingston today and only managed 2,500 so far sad. Also have to factor in large cappuccino and piece of cake. [piggy emoticon]

Anya Mon 29-Sept-14 13:42:08

Very impressive Shysal & Purple

Only managed 7524 yesterday but have already clocked up 8556 today, walking GS1 to school certainly helps.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 29-Sept-14 13:43:33

Yes. But have you all done your hoovering, dusting and floor washing?

Anya Mon 29-Sept-14 13:47:34

My house doesn't get dirty so no need to vacuum, dust or wash floors. I think it works like a self-clean oven hmm

shysal Mon 29-Sept-14 17:01:52

Mine is the same, Anya! Or is it that I don't wear my reading glasses (except for reading) so I can't see any dirt or dust? Housework comes way down my list of priorities! If I don't worry about it , I am sure nobody else will.
Purple, are you sure your pedometer is working properly? You must have done more than 2,500 in two hours, however slowly you walked.

NanKate Mon 29-Sept-14 17:53:38

In recent times I have not been able to get anywhere near 10,000, but have decided that as long as I manage a 30 minute fast walk per day, plus Keep Fit on a Monday and walking up and down our very steep hill most days, I will accept that and not beat myself up too much.

Because our mothers/fathers often led such active lives and had never heard of the 10,000 rule, they just got on with life and kept slim and fit.

TerriBull Mon 29-Sept-14 18:40:11

Yes she was Nanabelle.

11,076 so far today felt, tired after a fairly longish walk this morning, and got caught in the rain, that has happened for a while, I have got rather complacent about not carrying an umbrella with me due to the consistently good weather.

TerriBull Mon 29-Sept-14 18:41:49

"hasn't" not has.
