So, the NHS says: "Research shows that walking 10,000 steps a day will significantly improve your health. Putting one foot in front of the other can build stamina, burn excess calories and give you a healthier heart."

It's not the easiest thing to get started with, but - having been doing it since January - my own experience is that it definitely gets easier (indeed addictive. At the start it was "agh, 10,000 steps". Now I'm more "only 12,000 steps today?!")

One thing I have also found is that - as with dieting and our weigh in threads - having somewhere to talk to other people doing (or trying) the same thing, to encourage each other or to have a good old moan when it's all getting a bit much is a very good thing indeed.

So here inspired by this thread from TerriBull and for all those who are doing it, trying it, would like to give it a go, is the great Gransnet 10,000 steps club.

(I'm at 6,451 so far today btw!)

9983 for me today so nearly made it and am hoping to tomorrow.

It's ok! according to this article you only need to do 7,500! smile

shysal Mon 29-Sept-14 22:26:59

Thanks Jingle, interesting!

Anya Mon 29-Sept-14 22:31:57

Yes, interesting.

Purpledaffodil Mon 29-Sept-14 22:33:19

Interesting article Jingle! Sadly after yesterday's target hitting I am down to 4800 today.#lazycow. sad

NanKate Tue 30-Sept-14 08:11:34

Thanks Jing useful article that has given me hope. 7,500 is doable for me.

Gracesgran Tue 30-Sept-14 09:14:10

I have not even thought about 10,000 steps NanKate. My theory was: first week record. Some days were appallingly low because I was "working", sewing and crafting and didn't move a lot. The days when I do Mum's or my cleaning or other jobs for Mum were much better. So second week - increase appallingly low days with a walk. I was not aiming at anything other than an increase. When these days pass the "care" days I will start to add walks to increase them and then increase the walks to two on the very sedentary days to pass the caring days, etc., etc.,

I don't have a real aim in view although I gather 5,000 is what an average person does so that on every day would be good. As you get older any moving is good so I love my pedometer which encourages me to do a little more each day. I do wish I had realised it had a personal alarm before I called the alarm company out blush but that's another story smile

shysal Tue 30-Sept-14 16:32:32

Oh dear, Gracesgran grin Do you have the same pedometer as me, a Tanita with alarm?
I managed 10,351 yesterday, and on 11,112 so far today.

Gracesgran Tue 30-Sept-14 16:40:13

I am so impressed by those of you who are reaching the 10,000 and more!

It is the Tanita shysal and obviously the alarm is a wonderful idea - I just wish I had read the instructions blush. I like the fact that it says "hello" to me each morning too ... but I am easily pleased.

chloe1984 Tue 30-Sept-14 20:14:42

10351 for me today am happy that I have managed that as didn't think I had walked that far really.

TerriBull Tue 30-Sept-14 21:07:39

11,,237 today.

Anya Tue 30-Sept-14 21:47:01

Yipee! 11,532 today smile

Nanabelle Tue 30-Sept-14 22:41:58

A good day for a few of us today - probably the lovely weather helped. We have been walking around Wisley today and managed 11734 - but at quite a dawdling pace!

Anya Tue 30-Sept-14 23:15:14

Haven't we all done well wine

shysal Wed 01-Oct-14 07:58:34

Yes,*Anya*, a pat on the back for all! sunshine

shysal Thu 02-Oct-14 07:52:51

10,842 for me yesterday. Ramblers' 5 mile walk today, around river near Abingdon, should cover today's quota.

chloe1984 Thu 02-Oct-14 08:43:22

10277 for me yesterday off for a browse around some shops so hoping to reach 10000 today.

TerriBull Thu 02-Oct-14 09:06:16

Just topped 13,000 yesterday, due to an unexpected longish walk to pub yesterday evening for a meal with extended family. Not so sure I will do so well today.

Anya Thu 02-Oct-14 09:44:42

12,127 yesterday, my best yet, but my knees and ankles are shouting NO this morning.

shysal Fri 03-Oct-14 08:22:05

11,821 for me yesterday. BLT class this morning will take care of about 4,000. Making up the rest is less daunting than a whole 10,000 on non-class days.

chloe1984 Fri 03-Oct-14 08:45:26

Only 5824 for me yesterday spent a lot of time travelling to the shops well my DH always insists on travelling the scenic route! And did spend a lot of time sitting by the river eating ice cream don't think that helped.

shysal Fri 03-Oct-14 09:03:23

Sitting by the river sounds idyllic Chloe, including the ice cream! Hopefully this spell of nice weather will make the winter seem shorter .

chloe1984 Fri 03-Oct-14 14:58:50

Have to say it was very nice like to take a selfie at each place we go send it to DDs who like to see how we are spending their inheritance!

shysal Fri 03-Oct-14 16:22:43

Chloe grin

Anya Fri 03-Oct-14 19:57:00

A good 10,000 plus yesterday and a pathetic 5700 today. I think I'll go and find a river tomorrow and just sit and watch it flow. It's very soothing.
