So, the NHS says: "Research shows that walking 10,000 steps a day will significantly improve your health. Putting one foot in front of the other can build stamina, burn excess calories and give you a healthier heart."

It's not the easiest thing to get started with, but - having been doing it since January - my own experience is that it definitely gets easier (indeed addictive. At the start it was "agh, 10,000 steps". Now I'm more "only 12,000 steps today?!")

One thing I have also found is that - as with dieting and our weigh in threads - having somewhere to talk to other people doing (or trying) the same thing, to encourage each other or to have a good old moan when it's all getting a bit much is a very good thing indeed.

So here inspired by this thread from TerriBull and for all those who are doing it, trying it, would like to give it a go, is the great Gransnet 10,000 steps club.

(I'm at 6,451 so far today btw!)

You can't have a day off if you have a dog! Even if you play golf as well!

5241 steps on my first day with new pedometer. I'd say that was fairly average for me so need to get out more...

Busy today, but poor steps. Packing up after hols and driving home. You can't win 'em all.

On Friday I used the pedometer for my round of golf- that was 1100+ steps. I'm doing that three times a week and on the other days shorter walks and housework - as well as eating healthily that's the best I can do - the Lupus is very draining so I'm with you sort of ladies and gents- keep it up - keep on keeping on smile

10012 for me yesterday and that included walking into town and the Race (walk) for life I did. This thread is making me realise that I do need to be more active but short of running up and downstairs all day am trying to think of how to incorporate more steps into my day. Am off to the coast for a few days so am hoping to do more have also taken to carrying my phone everywhere as my pedodometer is an app !

As it is Sunday and buses here are scarce I walked into town, around the shops and back. Had downloaded Accupedo as recommended by Chloe1984 and this walk was 11,041 steps. I also had a couple of bags of shopping on the way back!!
Will have to do this more often and remember to carry my phone with me!

It's a great aim and I think I've calculated (by 'manual' counting) that I do 1000 steps in about 8 minutes. You only have to calculate once how long it takes you to do 1000 steps, then thereafter you can just time your walking rather than counting. It might seem as though 80 minutes (to do 10,000 steps) is impractical, especially if you're working. but walking round the house, upstairs, etc., etc. counts too. . . I think? you have to walk briskly to get the most benefit. I walk to the gym 2 or 3 times a week (I used to cycle); I walk to the supermarket; I'm a 10-minute walk from the bus stop; I walk as much as I can nearly every day, and I enjoy it.

11418 today and that took 99 minutes according to my pedometer Alison i walked a total of 8k and burned 530 kcals (allegedly). About a quarter of that was walking about the house, garden, up and down stairs.

Big improvement on yesterday.

Oh dear only 3996 yesterday but as I spent most of it sitting down watching old movies on TV as Mr Chloe works on a Sunday and I enjoy them more without his running commentary. I am trying harder today , much harder, will report back.

Bought a new super duper pedometer, I have given the rubbish one to my husband. Did 7,120 yesterday, have done 5,034 so far today, a lot of those on the treadmill, walking into town and back this afternoon so hope to exceed 10,000 by the end of the day. To get anywhere near the prescribed total I need to do both of these activities, unless I have a day out of the ordinary say up in London traipsing around.

It certainly makes you aware of how much you have to move about to reach the 10,000. I'm up to 8,500 and it's 1.30 pm but I've had to walk the dogs AND walk to the shops.

Not much hope for me then, knackered knees and arthritic back and walking is no longer a pleasure. I have walked and done exercise classes and been active most of my life, but now need a walking stick and my four wheeled shopping trolley as a 'walker'. So spare a thought for those of us who can't join the club.

TerriBull Mon 04-Aug-14 20:01:24

11,608 plus however many steps I take to crawl up stairs to bed later. A good day for me, steps wise!

chloe1984 Mon 04-Aug-14 20:32:27

8057 for me today am surprised as I always thought I was fairly active but as ever will try harder tomorrow.

Aka Mon 04-Aug-14 21:09:07

9988 plus the same crawl to bed as Terri when I eventually drag myself off this sofa. There are 13 steps to climb which ought to make up the 12 still needed, if not I'll jump up and down a few times grin

TerriBull Tue 05-Aug-14 17:05:51

9,797 plus anything between now and bedtime.

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Tue 05-Aug-14 17:13:25

10,337 and a long walk ahead which could be scuppered by extremely painful blister on little toe

chloe1984 Tue 05-Aug-14 18:52:43

Well I was up to 11234 after a long walk along the seafront then my phone ran out of charge! Am destroyed as I was going to smash it today. Another day tomorrow phone is now charging.

Aka Tue 05-Aug-14 22:08:25

Only 8,500 today but didn't push it as I too have a blister and I'm off on holiday again tomorrow.

chloe1984 Wed 06-Aug-14 19:41:28

14241 for me today not hopeful for tomorrow as will be driving home

TerriBull Wed 06-Aug-14 21:06:08

9,817 plus a few more to take me up to bedtime. Less than 10,000 due to having granddaughter all day although we did spend a fair amount of time at the park. I didn't get to do the activities that I try to follow to hit the magic figure, but what the hell you can't fret about doing the same things every day.

Aka Wed 06-Aug-14 23:07:29
