So, the NHS says: "Research shows that walking 10,000 steps a day will significantly improve your health. Putting one foot in front of the other can build stamina, burn excess calories and give you a healthier heart."

It's not the easiest thing to get started with, but - having been doing it since January - my own experience is that it definitely gets easier (indeed addictive. At the start it was "agh, 10,000 steps". Now I'm more "only 12,000 steps today?!")

One thing I have also found is that - as with dieting and our weigh in threads - having somewhere to talk to other people doing (or trying) the same thing, to encourage each other or to have a good old moan when it's all getting a bit much is a very good thing indeed.

So here inspired by this thread from TerriBull and for all those who are doing it, trying it, would like to give it a go, is the great Gransnet 10,000 steps club.

(I'm at 6,451 so far today btw!)

aka well done you. Only 8203 for me today but aiming for more tomorrow don't think I will ever get to 15,000. But will keep trying.

Thanks Terri been walking round Liverpool all day! Ankles aching but now relaxing on huge bed (which i have ALL to myself) in Premier Inn with feet up. Back home tomorrow so with long train journey won't clock up too many steps.

I got to 9,700ish yesterday, but we are off for a long walk this morning so hope to clock up quite a few steps, probably wont tomorrow, I think it's going to rain all day.

chloe1984 Sat 09-Aug-14 13:38:30

Thanks shysal I have this morning been dancing around the kitchen to the oldie tunes on Radio 2 also have walked into town and back and will soon be doing other boring household chores. Need to keep active as I managed to put on 4 lbs during our few days at the coast and I need to weigh in at Slimming Club on Wednesday.shock

ffinnochio Sat 09-Aug-14 14:09:19

No pedometer - but did the steps per minute system. Before 10am this morning I'd walked 8,850 steps - so I reckon by the end of the day I'll have done plenty more. smile

Aka Sat 09-Aug-14 15:12:36

Just worked out my average for the week is 9,700 a day. I've had low days and high days but so long as I'm averaging almost 10,000 a day I'm smile

I haven't given up just forgetting to carry phone with pedometer app. Did the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and Westfield shopping centre in Stratford yesterday so must've topped 10,000 easily - my body is telling me so today!!

shysal Sun 10-Aug-14 07:19:37

11,570 yesterday. Just setting off for the usual 2 hour Sunday walk. It is raining heavily but my friend and I are determined to carry on regardless. Must be mad!

TerriBull Sun 10-Aug-14 09:55:45

chloe1984 Sun 10-Aug-14 10:18:25

ffinnochio Sun 10-Aug-14 13:06:03

rockgran25 Sun 10-Aug-14 13:18:07

chloe1984 Mon 11-Aug-14 08:04:24

6785 for me yesterday off for a walk later so hoping (as ever) to improve.

shysal Mon 11-Aug-14 08:32:49

12,896 yesterday. Amazingly the rain stopped just long enough for my morning walk, and again for a shorter one in the afternoon.

jingle, exercise makes you feel better, in mind if not always in body!
