So, the NHS says: "Research shows that walking 10,000 steps a day will significantly improve your health. Putting one foot in front of the other can build stamina, burn excess calories and give you a healthier heart."

It's not the easiest thing to get started with, but - having been doing it since January - my own experience is that it definitely gets easier (indeed addictive. At the start it was "agh, 10,000 steps". Now I'm more "only 12,000 steps today?!")

One thing I have also found is that - as with dieting and our weigh in threads - having somewhere to talk to other people doing (or trying) the same thing, to encourage each other or to have a good old moan when it's all getting a bit much is a very good thing indeed.

So here inspired by this thread from TerriBull and for all those who are doing it, trying it, would like to give it a go, is the great Gransnet 10,000 steps club.

(I'm at 6,451 so far today btw!)

Only 6,000 for yesterday as close friend came to lunch and we spent all afternoon catching up.

11,823 for today so far clocked up walking to the pub for lunch and back.

9212 yesterday, mostly walking round the shops!

Nanabelle Sun 26-Oct-14 23:09:59

I opened up my iPad after Strictly and the fitbit ap flashed up that I only had another 1200 steps to go for the 10,000. Ah ha, just time to go for a quick walk round the village before Downton started, so now I have managed a good start to this week with 10804. Last week's totals were quite low for me as I didn't get out enough, so determined this week to make more effort.
Enjoy the week everyone and happy walking smile

shysal Mon 27-Oct-14 08:10:12

I had a good start to the week with 20,537 yesterday. I usually get more and more reluctant as the week goes on, so must try hard to keep going.
How obedient of you Nanabelle, to do as Fitbit suggests! My exercise before Downton was to walk into the kitchen to look in the fridge for a snack, found a Mars ice cream!

9814 for me yesterday am aiming to go for a longish walk this morning as it is so light and bright outside . But DH seems to have other ideas so may end up traveling a few miles but by car.

yogagran Mon 27-Oct-14 10:26:15

Nanabelle - that Fitbit app is so useful isn't it, it does spur you on to do more. I have a couple of friends who also have Fitbits and it's fun to watch their progress and try to beat their step total grin

chloe1984 Mon 27-Oct-14 20:25:14

11738 for me today so a little better

shysal Tue 28-Oct-14 05:50:50

10,594 yesterday, without actually 'going for a walk'. Body Attack class and various errands.

TerriBull Tue 28-Oct-14 19:56:31

Only 6,000 for yesterday, I blame the clocks going back, didn't feel very energetic plus I took the car into town, I usually walk, but had a big shop couldn't carry it all. 12,037 for today we walked in Bushy Park, what a beautiful Autumn day, can't believe this wonderful weather we are having.

chloe1984 Tue 28-Oct-14 20:34:42

11424 for me today bit of an effort required as I must be feeling extra lazy.

chloe1984 Wed 29-Oct-14 20:14:39

13095 for me today am off to a family wedding for the next few days so not expecting too much.

shysal Thu 30-Oct-14 08:47:01

11,429 on Tuesday, and 10,412 yesterday. Not pleasant walking in fine drizzle. Hope the wedding goes well chloe. flowers

Had a really bad day yesterday only 3,000ish. Some times the constraints of day to day life don't always allow time for walking, plus it was raining! 10,259 today a nice Autumn day again so we headed off to the lovely Woodland Gardens in Bushy Park for an afternoon stroll.

I'm only up to 580 today shock, which just shows that a day at home getting the place ready for a Halloween party doesn't involve moving nearly as much as I thought it would (to be fair, a lot of it involved googling spooky recipes). But I'm off to a Tamla Motown night later on - I'll be interested to see how many steps 4 hours of dancing amounts to. thlsmile

11,062. Drove down to West Wittering and did many of these steps on the amazing sandy beach there. Many children on half term in bathing suits and loads of people in t shirts and shorts. It was quite surreal had to pinch ourselves to remind us tomorrow is the first day of November. Same people on the beach could of course be wearing coats and scarves next week, but for today anyway it was like a summer's day and it was wonderful to be outside and hot so late in the year.

shysal Mon 03-Nov-14 08:53:09

The last 3 days I have managed 10,497,16,428 and 21,164. My car is off the road for a few days so I am walking everywhere.
Terri, we used to go to West Wittering sometimes when I was a child, I remember nothing about it except the sand!

chloe1984 Tue 04-Nov-14 17:57:43

Am now back to ' normal' and have managed 15614 today I need to make up for the last few days when I haven't been able to do much walking.

Just spotted this thread and think it's a brill idea. I know there's a very good app for an iPhone, but has anyone got a good app for an ordinary smartphone that they can recommend?
Sorry if it's already beem mentioned, but there are 12 pages on this threadworms trawl through....
Are we supposed to do 10,000 every single day? Forever?

shysal Wed 05-Nov-14 09:10:16

Welcome to the 'club' mrsmopp. 10,000 each day is the aim, unfortunately life doesn't always allow the time. I know several people use the Fitbit app, but not sure whether it is available for any smartphone. I just use a 3-axes reliable pedometer in my pocket, which couldn't be simpler.

chloe1984 Wed 05-Nov-14 09:46:17

Welcome from me too mrsmopp I used to use the app on my smart phone but now find a simple clip on one does the job. I think we all aim for 10000 steps but as ever life and in my case sheer laziness just gets in the way. As for doing it forever I expect when I finally win the lottery I will be able to employ someone to do the steps for me wink

Where is everyone? Too busy walking or, (like me) finding the colder, wetter and shorter days a real challenge?

I've only managed 10k a couple of times the last two weeks. It has just not been tempting to go out - though today seems a bit more welcoming, at least from this side of the window!

Failing a large shopping centre nearby I think I am going to have to get used to the weather and the short days.

Anyone got a strategy to cope until April?

shysal Sun 09-Nov-14 17:49:20

I am still here! Just about managing to keep up the numbers, but finished my 22,901 in the dark today. It was nice to see some sunshine after very heavy rain yesterday, which drove me indoors to watch a Danielle Steel film recorded from TV, something I rarely do.

Versavisa Mon 10-Nov-14 08:55:22

22901 !! I don't think I did that much in the whole of last week!

Well done shysal

Pittcity Mon 10-Nov-14 09:06:04

You are all putting me to shame. I am managing 10,000 plus on about three days a week by purposefully striding past the bus stop.

Felt great yesterday as our High Street was closed for Remembrance Parade and the traffic was gridlocked. It is a great feeling when walking is faster than driving. (11088 steps - I only count the steps with the phone in my handbag so I did more indoors but not many!!)

mrsmopp Mon 10-Nov-14 17:16:46

I bought a pedometer from a sports shop but had to take it back because it only did metric. I want to know I've walked five miles, not however many silly km things. So took that back, went to another sports shop for one that did miles. Got it home, it was all packed up in a plastic bubble and cardboard, it would be easier to break into Fort Knox! then I find the blinking numbers are so microscopic I need my reading glasses AND a magnifying glass to see anything. So that's got to go back too.
I reckon I've done my 1000 steps trekking round the shops!
