So, the NHS says: "Research shows that walking 10,000 steps a day will significantly improve your health. Putting one foot in front of the other can build stamina, burn excess calories and give you a healthier heart."

It's not the easiest thing to get started with, but - having been doing it since January - my own experience is that it definitely gets easier (indeed addictive. At the start it was "agh, 10,000 steps". Now I'm more "only 12,000 steps today?!")

One thing I have also found is that - as with dieting and our weigh in threads - having somewhere to talk to other people doing (or trying) the same thing, to encourage each other or to have a good old moan when it's all getting a bit much is a very good thing indeed.

So here inspired by this thread from TerriBull and for all those who are doing it, trying it, would like to give it a go, is the great Gransnet 10,000 steps club.

(I'm at 6,451 so far today btw!)

Had a bad day , spent nearly all day sitting down eating lots and lots so only 5404 for me am now too fat to walk anymore am ,determined to improve tomorrow.

Versavisa Mon 25-Aug-14 08:19:00

I was disappointed to see that my pedometer had reset itself today, but luckily it was before I'd had my walk. So I clocked 10,101 after the reset. Probably not much before as I did need that walk!

Rosannie Mon 25-Aug-14 20:25:37

Just returned from Whitby and surrounding countryside and I bought my very first pedometer in Pickering, I managed a 6 mile walk (but need to convert it to steps). Next day I lost the back off the pedometer and the battery came adrift so I didn't measure any more days walking!!

Now I'm home I will sort it out and would love to join the 10,000 steps club.

Another disastrous day for me could blame it on the weather as I haven't gone far today but more honestly blame it on sheer idleness so only 5152 for me. Two GS coming for a few days tomorrow so will improve no doubt.

TerriBull Mon 25-Aug-14 21:04:05

Chloe you have managed to exceed by steps by roughly 150, I also had a bad day coming in at just under 5,000. My excuse, it was raining cats and dogs all day and it was my wedding anniversary so we went out for a long lunch instead of a long walk. Never mind, as Scarlett O'Hara once said "tomorrow is another day"

chloe1984 Mon 25-Aug-14 21:12:00

terri happy wedding anniversary flowers we will both do better tomorrow

Versavisa Tue 26-Aug-14 07:11:24

I was determined not to let the rain put me off so I wrapped up and went for a walk. Last time I looked I was at 8,889 and then when I looked at home the thing had reset itself again!!!

I think it must have been when I was trying to pull my waterproof trousers off as it does involve a few contortions! Will watch for that in future.

shysal Tue 26-Aug-14 12:36:43

Welcome to the club Roseannie. Your 6 mile walk will be well in excess of 10,000 steps. Hope you have better sucess with the pedometer in the future. Before I got my Tanita 3-axes one, which I place in a pocket, I went through several which broke or fell off and got lost!

I clocked up 11,305 on Sunday, and 8,291 yesterday (1 hour walking in the rain was enough).

Rosannie Tue 26-Aug-14 13:12:15

Thanks for your welcome shysal, back to normal routine days now so might not match my good holiday walking . I've fixed the pedometer with a bit of waterproof tape and my morning trip to Asda has clocked up 1500 steps, that's a surprise! Planning to go out later and add some steps on.

TerriBull Tue 26-Aug-14 19:34:22

I'm proud to record 12,182 steps for today so far, which makes up for an abysmal Saturday and a not so good yesterday.

Welcome to the club Rosannie, you will probably see from previous logs, we don't do well everyday.

chloe1984 Tue 26-Aug-14 19:58:29

Oh wow well done you once again on the naughty step as only 6558 for me this last few days have gone to pot and am losing the will to do anything much. But keep thinking I will feel a bit better soon , grandchildren are now here so will be taking them out and about until Saturday.
Roseanne welcome from me too, some days are better than others but we keep trying so good luck to you.

Versavisa Tue 26-Aug-14 22:31:15

3928 for me! Meant to go out later but went down with a bout of lethargitis. Highly infectious lately smile

Flowerofthewest Tue 26-Aug-14 22:59:26

6390 for me today, my first day of recording with GN

Aka Tue 26-Aug-14 23:03:22

Just 5402 or 3.78km or 2.34878 miles approximately grinyet only 251.2 calories.

shysal Wed 27-Aug-14 08:31:51

The estimated calories are always disappointing aren't they? I struggled to motivate myself to do yesterday's 11,048 steps, a measly 474 cals.

TerriBull Wed 27-Aug-14 09:37:56

Yes it is disappointing shysal. I would really like to know whether these calories are over and above those used if we were to have a completely in active day.

chloe1984 Wed 27-Aug-14 18:56:33

Have spent most of the day at the coast with Grandsons and am now finished walking for the day so 13424 for me . However have eaten my own weight in fish and chips and ice cream but still happy that I have achieved so can only go onward and upwards. Whoop whoop.

TerriBull Wed 27-Aug-14 19:09:32

Sounds like you had a great day chloe and wow that's a great result. 10,632 for me, not too disappointed with that and did get to spend some time with new grandson in the middle of the day so that was good too.

shysal Thu 28-Aug-14 09:37:02

Managed 13,074 yesterday, but only because I under-estimated the distance from the car park I used before walking to the little local M&S food shop and back. I only had 3,000 more steps to do, but what takes only moments in the car was an hour's walk!
I am getting a bit bored with walking without a destination, so am trying a few different options. If I do the same route again I shall time it better, so that I don't get mixed up in the exodus from the Mini car plant. They swarm out of there at high speed, on foot and on bikes!

chloe1984 Thu 28-Aug-14 09:38:55

How lovely terri to have a new grandson congratulations. Another day today gaining here but intend to get out later no doubt having to drag grandsons away from their computer games first.

TerriBull Thu 28-Aug-14 20:12:14

12,623, a long walk to my dentist today, I usually drive there. My hygienist noticed my pedometer and said she also wore one "I do 10,000 steps walking around the practice and going to lunch" she volunteered, "if I go into London I do in the region of 25,000, I never use the tube" she added. That wiped the smile off my face!

chloe1984 Thu 28-Aug-14 20:48:53

10589 for me have not cooked so much 'proper' food in ages but dear grandsons go home tomorrow time to read the newspaper again, but will try to keep up those steps. Anyone walking in excess of 25000 steps a day has my admiration order naps her pedometer is working properlywink

chloe1984 Thu 28-Aug-14 20:49:29

Try perhaps instead of naps ( wishful thinking on my part)

Flowerofthewest Thu 28-Aug-14 21:56:41

9129 for me today, yesterday only 2551

Versavisa Fri 29-Aug-14 08:21:42

I managed 10,536 yesterday. Second time this week I've made it to the 10k mark so pleased with myself.
