So, the NHS says: "Research shows that walking 10,000 steps a day will significantly improve your health. Putting one foot in front of the other can build stamina, burn excess calories and give you a healthier heart."
It's not the easiest thing to get started with, but - having been doing it since January - my own experience is that it definitely gets easier (indeed addictive. At the start it was "agh, 10,000 steps". Now I'm more "only 12,000 steps today?!")
One thing I have also found is that - as with dieting and our weigh in threads - having somewhere to talk to other people doing (or trying) the same thing, to encourage each other or to have a good old moan when it's all getting a bit much is a very good thing indeed.
So here inspired by this thread from TerriBull and for all those who are doing it, trying it, would like to give it a go, is the great Gransnet 10,000 steps club.
(I'm at 6,451 so far today btw!)
Only 3679 yesterday, didn't have much spare time as well as feeling a bit weary and CBA!
5862 so far today, may go for a walk later with DH, exhausted from running around woodlands with 2 DGS
11042 for me today, Grandchildren have now returned home so lots of clearing up to do tomorrow so hopefully will be a good day exercise wise.
I didn't make it to the magic number today, in spite of going to the gym and going on the treadmill, a joyless experience and I felt twice as tired afterwards. I've decided a real walk is much better. 8,648 not much to show for all that effort. Will do the sensible thing and get walking tomorrow.
You did well today Chloe.
Managed 1291 today and only the stairs left to do. I've been slaving over accounts all day and feel more exhausted than if I'd walked 100,000 steps.
9356 today after a couple of days hovering around the 5000-6000 mark. And yet on those poor days it felt like I had walked miles. Just goes to show
10,806 not too bad, hopefully will be 11,000 by bedtime.
12, 455 today. Well done Terri
I'm finding I up the total on days when I just get out the house and wander off somewhere....to town, or the allotment, or walk across to see the family.
Next week it's back to the GC and I'm not sure where that will take me step-wise.
10,030 yesterday. I'm finding I'm sleeping better since I started this challenge which is a great benefit to me.
Aka I love just wandering if I can make the effort. It's already surprising how many roads and paths I've found that I didn't know previously.
8383 not such a good day as mostly in the car and shopping but well done to everyone else some fantastic totals here. Need to up my game as managed to put on a total of 4 lbs whilst grandchildren were staying blame it on the peanut butter and Nutella that I always buy for them and manage to eat most of the jar before they even see it. So best foot forward for me this week. Will report back.
I am inspired and will order a pedometer from Amazon immediately.
I look forward to hearing how you get on Coolgran.
After a couple of lazy days nursing an aching knee, I have felt good today and clocked up 21,866 steps over 3 separate walks! The weather has been lovely, and I just wanted to be out in it.
12,489 and totally knackered long walk this afternoon to the pub directly across the river from where we live. We had a long sit down and a drink staring back at at familiar territory. So near with boat, but so far without one! Beautiful day enjoyed the walk back along the river, over the bridge and then another long walk the other side.
My God shysal have just read your total, I think I'd be crawling about on my hands and knees if I'd done that many!
11205 for me today I was fairly pleased until I saw the amazing totals from both terri and sal so well done both, not sure I will ever top your total sal but certainly gives us all something to aim for. Going to try a longish walk tomorrow so ever hopeful. Look forward to seeing your totals coolgran
I've been watching this thread, and feeling a bit disgruntled. The physio said I'd to cut down my walking, by a significant amount. I have done for a month, my feet do ache a bit less, but my jeans are tight, and I miss having a3 mile walk to start the day. So, I have a new pedometer, and today have done 8004 steps.
When I last used a pedometer, about 2 years ago, I usually did 12,000 so I feel I'm (almost) following the physic's advise. The walk this morning was 5,400 steps- is that about 3 miles folks?
10,106 just made it today. Iam64 according to my pedometer this equates to 8.08 km, which is almost 5 miles, so on that basis I guess 5,400 steps is about 3 miles, roughly, maybe a little under that.
11581 from me today lam24 I agree that 5400 steps is about three miles so all good , hopefully won't be long before jeans are too big. Not sure what I will do tomorrow as DH is working and I have promised myself that I will clear out both of our wardrobes (what joy) and that may not leave a lot of time for walking.
13,003 yesterday. Good luck with the wardrobe clearing Chloe, when I do mine almost everything goes back in! I am a bit OCD with it, hanging tops in rainbow colour order, and pale to dark within each section!
This unfortunately doesn't extend to the shoes which are jumbled on the floor and shelf beneath!
I've set my pedometer for my stride length - measured by counting steps and then measuring the distance in the back garden. 10,000 steps works out about 4.16 miles for me, though my pedometer measures in km! Good job I like maths.
Managed 10,546 yesterday. Would have done more as I was enjoying it but it started to rain, and I decided a cup of tea was called for.
6263 so far today but a six mile walk home* so that will help! (why do we not have a halo emoticon?)
On holiday dragged my 6yo on a 12km walk (about 17,000 steps) - bribed with olives and ice cream
*will be stuffing face at dinner en route - so maybe the halo can go back in the drawer for another day
Rubbish interim pedometer fell off - now have one I like much more, Measures steps, distance in km and calories burned. The latter never builds as fast as you'd hope
11665 for me today feel like I haven't stopped all day. So exhausted. Will report back tomorrow on how I do.
13493 so far today. Went into London, up the ArcelorMittel Tower in the Queen Elizabeth Park, Stratford and then on to see the poppies at the Tower. Made the mistake of wearing a new pair of walking shoes on what turned out to be a hot day - result blisters
Have been to the beach hut in Walberswick for the past 3 days, managed around 7,500 a day, 2,000 of those walking to the loo and back to the hut. Good for the thighs is Walberswick.
11,038 aching ankles!
Yesterday (tuesday) I managed only 4,800. I did a yoga class of one and a half hours, that was a challenge though, and 3 hours at dog training later, which included running round the agility course. So, I'm claiming a "good" 4,800.
