A new low-carb support thread for 2016

Thought we needed a shiny new thread for the New Year.
The thread is intended to support people who are already on the diet or want to start losing weight / gaining health benefits by low-carbing.
Here is a simple explanation of this way of eating and how it works.
www.dietdoctor.com/lchf
You do not have to count calories, weigh anything, exercise furiously or feel hungry.
You do have to cut out sugar and sugar-substitutes and avoid starchy foods like potatoes, bread, rice and pasta.
You need to eat lots of vegetables (especially those grown above ground) and protein which can be cheese, eggs, meat, fish etc. You can eat olive oil, butter and other natural fats. You can eat limited amounts of fruit, dark chocolate and some alcoholic drinks in moderation.
You need to avoid anything labelled low-fat and most processed food and drink.
Here is a link to the Mumsnet low-carb bootcamp thread, for those who want to lose weight more quickly than the diet adopted by most people on the existing Gransnet thread.

Here is a link to the original Gransnet thread - though there is absolutely no need to plough through it before you start. grin

Lazigirl an easy lunch idea...buy a ready cooked, hot chicken. We eat it with coleslaw or Waldorf salad (shop bought unless feeling creative) then have the rest for dinner - perhaps in a Caesar Salad, substituting the croutons for crispy bacon?

shysal Fri 17-Jun-16 08:38:34

Many thanks for the recipe Pippa. I shall try it soon.

Anya Fri 17-Jun-16 09:25:19

Let me know if it works for you shysal as I'm notorious for messing up recipes and need something idiot proof.

I made some cauliflower hash browns yesterday. Recipe from the Diet Doctor. They were quite successful so I shall make some more and freeze them. They were nice on their own with mayo and a salad and I think should go well with bacon and an egg for breakfasts.

I wish I'd known about this way of eating 30 years ago . It's simple and easy and feels a bit naughty as it breaks the old dieting rules ! Weighed myself this morning and I've now lost 2st 12lbs ! So delighted and feeling great .
Might make your hash browns later , BB .

BBbevan Sun 19-Jun-16 10:41:08

Well done tired that's what we like to hear

Mamie Sun 19-Jun-16 18:31:36

Brilliant news TOW.
Today we had chicken Waldorf for lunch then shoulder of lamb (rubbed all over with garlic, butter, cumin, coriander and paprika) cooked slowly in a roasting bag for three hours for dinner.

tiredoldwoman Sun 19-Jun-16 19:29:00

I made the hash browns , they stuck a bit but were good. Might make them next time with a wee bit of garlic in them . Felt like naughty carbs in my mouth , what a clever cheat .

BBbevan Sun 19-Jun-16 20:34:37

Garlic is a good idea and cheese perhaps TOW ? We have just had Hairy Bikers peppers stuffed with mushrooms, hazelnuts and feta, to name a few ingredients. Really tasty with a big green salad.

Anya Mon 20-Jun-16 08:34:05

BB love that recipe for stuffed peppers, great for veggie guests too. Going to try out a moussaka recipe tonight as I've a big family meal (for 10) coming up, one of whom cant eat glutton.

Might try those hash brown later this week.

That's absolutely wonderful TOW smile

mamie 'm a great fan of cooking a chicken in a roasting bag, must try it with a lamb joint sometime too.

Sarah Raven's Chicken Puttanesca this evening from the 5:2 book. We have people coming to view the house so something in the oven might smell nice grin

Mamie Mon 20-Jun-16 19:06:35

The lamb was delicious Anya and I used the leftovers in a tagine tonight. How are you getting on with yours?

Anya Mon 20-Jun-16 22:58:48

So far I've tried a chicken dish with preserved lemons and olives. That was ok. Then last week I make a lovely lamb tagine, with wonderful spices and that was amazing. Served it with cauliflower couscous.

Pork chops with a blue cheese sauce. Asparagus and broad beans from the garden , this evening.
My DD said 'Yuk' when I told her, so we shall see .

Mamie Wed 22-Jun-16 14:33:26

Last night was our 47th anniversary so we had duck breasts with limoncello followed by the Elizabeth David chocolate mousse.
Tonight is sausages and salad!
I also did a prawn Marie Rose for lunch yesterday, which made a nice change.

BBbevan Wed 22-Jun-16 16:02:17

CongratulationsMamie and your DH. Hope you had a lovely evening flowers

Anya Sun 26-Jun-16 08:31:55

New chickens started laying last week - at least 2 of the three have. Lovely little pullet eggs smile

Have GDs 1 & 2 staying over the weekend and they love collecting the eggs. One of the simple pleasures in life, opening up the nesting boxes to see eggs there. So a simple lunch of cheese omelettes and salad today I think.

Anya Sun 26-Jun-16 08:32:56

Hope the anniversary went well Mamie? It's our 47th in August too.

Mamie Sun 26-Jun-16 09:33:16

Yes fine thanks Anya; we never do much but are having a quick trip to the Normandy Impressionist 2016 exhibitions soon.
Pot-roast veal and cauliflower mash tonight.

BBbevan Sun 26-Jun-16 10:05:25

Done it ! Crashed the 2 stone barrier. Only 8 lb to go Yipee

shysal Sun 26-Jun-16 10:50:53

You are amazing BB! You have done so well to stick at it. Is your blood glucose normal now?

Mamie Sun 26-Jun-16 11:16:46

Brilliant BB. grin

BBbevan Sun 26-Jun-16 11:21:35

I expect so shysal, but I hate testing so will let Dr do it . I have done it occasionally and it was going in the right direction
Thanks everyone for being so supportive

Anya Sun 26-Jun-16 15:05:01

Well done BB you must be very proud of your achievement.

Lazigirl Sun 26-Jun-16 18:39:38

Congratulation BB ?.It's such a great feeling to lose weight without having the tyranny of a diet which counts calories isn't it? I have become much more creative with meals, and we have some interesting concoctions! You lot seem brilliant cooks to me, but I have picked up masses of tips. I liked Anya's - buy a ready cooked chicken, and have for two meals, once with salad. My name isn't LG for nothing........
I went to diabetic clinic last week, and fasting blood sugar 5.9 which is just about OK, so intend to keep low carbing forever to stave off Diabetes 2.
