A new low-carb support thread for 2016

Thought we needed a shiny new thread for the New Year.
The thread is intended to support people who are already on the diet or want to start losing weight / gaining health benefits by low-carbing.
Here is a simple explanation of this way of eating and how it works.
www.dietdoctor.com/lchf
You do not have to count calories, weigh anything, exercise furiously or feel hungry.
You do have to cut out sugar and sugar-substitutes and avoid starchy foods like potatoes, bread, rice and pasta.
You need to eat lots of vegetables (especially those grown above ground) and protein which can be cheese, eggs, meat, fish etc. You can eat olive oil, butter and other natural fats. You can eat limited amounts of fruit, dark chocolate and some alcoholic drinks in moderation.
You need to avoid anything labelled low-fat and most processed food and drink.
Here is a link to the Mumsnet low-carb bootcamp thread, for those who want to lose weight more quickly than the diet adopted by most people on the existing Gransnet thread.

Here is a link to the original Gransnet thread - though there is absolutely no need to plough through it before you start. grin

Well Done BB !! You must be feeling fabby ! How long has it taken ?

BBbevan Sun 26-Jun-16 19:55:48

TOW, just four months. I need to lose another Half a stone to give myself a bit of leeway. But then it is just maintaining the weight loss. I will still need to LCHF though for my BG

tiredoldwoman Sun 26-Jun-16 19:59:21

Yes, I think the maintenance will be difficult . You're so close to your target , wow .
I want to lose another stone then maintain , today I found that I was needing carbs . I didn't scoff any though , but the desire was there ! I don't want to slide back up .

BBbevan Mon 27-Jun-16 14:54:44

TOW I know just what you mean about carbs. I went into our local Co-op this morning. There was a tray of Portugese custard tarts. I could have bought one and eaten it Nobody would know. I was very tempted But I didn't. I've got this far and am not going to ruin thr ship for a cupful of custard. Portugese or not.
Chicken Satay this evening, with steamed broccoli.

We have been maintaining for over a year now and found it tricky at first but fine now. We now have a slice of spelt toast and home-made marmalade for breakfast. We stick with salad or soup and no carbs for lunch. Once or twice a week we have a small quantity of carbs with dinner; baby new potatoes from the garden at the moment.
When we were in Spain in January I ate too many almonds, oranges and dates. I cut out all evening carbs and portion size for a bit and shifted the 1lb that I had put on after a couple of weeks. My weight has been amazingly stable except for heat and fluid retention.

BBbevan Mon 27-Jun-16 16:24:35

Thank you*Mamie*. I was going to ask for your advice. I don't want to raise my BG or put on weight.

Lazigirl Mon 27-Jun-16 17:04:17

I could do with losing 2 or 3 more lbs, but am generally not increasing weight. I find if I have been out to eat or have a main meal with carbs occasionally, weight remains static but doesn't go up. Trying to do more walking which helps too. I had a craving for a snickers bar of all things the other day, but I don't think the odd lapse matters. It's what you eat most days that counts. Had some over weight friends round for supper on Saturday and they have been on the typical low calorie diet, lost weight initially and now put it back on. Their eyes nearly popped out when they saw me scoffing cream, butter etc. Felt a little bit smug. smile

NanKate I said I'd try to find the Persian Chicken recipe I blue-linked a while ago. I can't find it just yet and some visitors have just dropped in unexpectedly so will try again tomorrow. Lovely to meet you at last! smile

NanKate Fri 01-Jul-16 19:02:55

No hurry Anya you have fun with your visitors and send me the recipe when things are quieter for you.

Had a reasonably low carb supper and feel almost back on track.

Enjoy your weekend. smile

Persian Chicken

Substitute raw riced/crumbled cauliflower at the rice stage.

NanKate Sat 02-Jul-16 08:12:11

Thanks Anya.

tiredoldwoman Sat 02-Jul-16 09:30:12

Help me , help me!
I've had a high carb few days ( retiral parties and a meal out ) I think I'm sinking back into stodge delights ! I'm swimming off to get Michael Mosley's book to get me back on track.
Get behind me Satan - take those cakes away .

Anya Sat 02-Jul-16 09:43:46

Put that cupcake down immediately TOW - you are only allowed to eat it naked in front of a full-length mirror! wink

BBbevan Sat 02-Jul-16 10:12:22

Slapped wrist TOW. Make something like a fruit fool with a bit of Splenda. Gooseberries are in season. Much better than cake ( who am I kidding)

tiredoldwoman Sat 02-Jul-16 10:12:23

Oh Lord - you've cured my addiction ! Instantly ! And made me laugh my way out of my downer ! Thank you . Salad and ham for lunch - the crow can have my cake !! x x

tiredoldwoman Sat 02-Jul-16 10:17:31

Oooh , goosies and Greek yoghurt and a slapped wrist ! That'll set this old girl back on track ! Thank you .x .

BBbevan Sat 02-Jul-16 10:20:05

We aim to please grin

NanKate Sun 03-Jul-16 21:07:53

Advice needed on chestnuts please. Can they be part of a low sugar/carb eating plan ?

Anya Sun 03-Jul-16 21:50:28

Think they are quite high in carbs NanKate ....but having said that, if you're going to eat a handful roasted as a snack instead of a cupcake or a bar of chocolate then......

NanKate Mon 04-Jul-16 11:14:31

I suspected that they could be high in carbs Anya I think I will give them a miss, other than with my Christmas dinner. We put them in with the sprouts and I thoroughly enjoy munching on one or two.

BBbevan Mon 04-Jul-16 12:06:14

Marron Glacé Hmmmm.envy

Anya Mon 04-Jul-16 15:22:32

One or two...no problem NK

BBbevan Mon 04-Jul-16 15:51:29

I suppose mine are out Anya sigh

Mamie Tue 05-Jul-16 08:35:38

Not keen on chestnuts, me.
Am in the UK so lots of foodie temptation around but managing quite well. Monkfish with chorizo coming with Darren in the Cabbage van today. Such luxury.... Wonder if France will ever get as far as Internet shopping...

Lazigirl Tue 05-Jul-16 15:53:53

Darren in the Cabbage van? grin There's a business opportunity on your return Mamie, hawking produce to the lazy elderly and infirm in your neighbourhood. Or you could flog "exotic" English stuff ie marmite and call it the Rosbif van??
