Thought we needed a shiny new thread for the New Year.
The thread is intended to support people who are already on the diet or want to start losing weight / gaining health benefits by low-carbing.
Here is a simple explanation of this way of eating and how it works.
www.dietdoctor.com/lchf
You do not have to count calories, weigh anything, exercise furiously or feel hungry.
You do have to cut out sugar and sugar-substitutes and avoid starchy foods like potatoes, bread, rice and pasta.
You need to eat lots of vegetables (especially those grown above ground) and protein which can be cheese, eggs, meat, fish etc. You can eat olive oil, butter and other natural fats. You can eat limited amounts of fruit, dark chocolate and some alcoholic drinks in moderation.
You need to avoid anything labelled low-fat and most processed food and drink.
Here is a link to the Mumsnet low-carb bootcamp thread, for those who want to lose weight more quickly than the diet adopted by most people on the existing Gransnet thread.

Here is a link to the original Gransnet thread - though there is absolutely no need to plough through it before you start. grin

A bit more up-to-date would be good BB .

Can get the thought of duck and fresh figs out if my mind.

Mamie Thu 14-Jul-16 11:40:20

It is delicious*Anya*. We marinate the dried figs in brandy but I guess apple juice would do. Cut the duck into pieces and thread on the skewer with the figs. Very simple but delicious.

BBbevan Thu 14-Jul-16 13:02:50

That sounds delicious Mamie .

Exactly Anya. My new doctor is female and young so I go with good hopes smile

Anya Thu 14-Jul-16 16:27:02

I'm going to try that on Saturday Mamie - using apple juice sad but I'm sure it will taste just as delicious.

Mamie Thu 14-Jul-16 16:30:27

Should be fine - though the alcohol would burn off!

Anya Thu 14-Jul-16 16:33:51

Yes, I thought of that then I remembered Id be left with half a bottle of brandy just saying 'DRINK ME' like something from Alice in Wonderland.

BB here's a link to a GP I know personally who has researched the effect of LC on his diabetic patients. You might want to print out a copy just in case???

Thanks Anya , I will certainly take that article with me. Let's hope I won't need it .

Hello everyone

I am so glad I was directed to this thread, so interesting. I am Pre Diabetic and am in a bit of a panic. Read Michael Moselys book, looked at the Diabetes UK site and feel a bit overwhelmed. Low carb seems the way to go.

I know I have to cut down the amount of fruit I eat. I also have a bit of an addiction to Nakd bars. Especially the pressed dates and cashew nut ones!

Cauliflower rice/mash has been a revelation to me. So..onwards and upwards..hopefully.

Welcome, this is a great thread for lots of support and advice and answering questions. Low carb is so easy, I have been on LCHF since April and so far have lost just over 2 stone, only two more to go. I never feel hungry and lots of energy, sleeping better too, in spite of night temperatures of 30 degrees centigrade outside, thank heavens for air conditioning.

Must dash need a dip in the swimming pool it is 40 degrees, the ironing will have to wait.

Mamie Sat 16-Jul-16 13:10:45

Welcome Cathy04, glad you found us. grin
Warming up here in Normandy, too. sunshine
Tonight we are having salmon in cream on a bed of spinach with courgettes in a parcel.

BBbevan Sat 16-Jul-16 13:30:11

Excellent Cathy Glad you got here. Lots of excellent advice from very generous posters. The panic will soon go. smile

Mamie, it the BBQ tonight, chicken something, DH invention, with chillies from the garden, I may be even hotter! Then homemade raspberry ice cream, we finished up the cheesecake last night.

Mamie Sat 16-Jul-16 13:45:21

Sounds delicious - no raspberries here yet, but the cherries are wonderful.
We have chillies growing too and the espelette peppers from SW France.
Cathy, don't know if you picked it up from the thread, but OH got out of pre-diabetes and has stayed out for over a year now, on this diet. It does work!

Anya Sat 16-Jul-16 14:06:10

Very disappointed as too poorly to go into Leamington to only shop likely to have fresh figs for fig and duck kebabs, which is a shames as OH has just finished building a brick BBQ. Ah well, there's always tomorrow,

But welcome Cathy glad you managed to find your way across to this thread.

Mamie Sat 16-Jul-16 15:09:00

The recipe is soaked dried figs Anya. I think fresh ones would collapse.

Izabella Sat 16-Jul-16 20:00:56

ONE transgression, just ONE and a BG of 11.8. Annoyed with self.

Anya Sat 16-Jul-16 20:26:26

Mamie thanks for that info...now those I can manage. I've organised a family BBQ for Tuesday so I'm going to put those on the menu.

Izabella put it behind you, pick yourself up, dust yourself off and start all over again, as the song says ..good luck.

BBbevan Mon 18-Jul-16 04:59:15

Never mind Izabela Today is a new day. smile

BBbevan Tue 19-Jul-16 16:11:31

Well I got it all wrong for dinner this evening. Temperature in mid 30s and we are supposed to be having roast lamb. I'll pretend we are in Greece and make it minty and yogurty smile

Mamie Tue 19-Jul-16 16:37:54

It is 37° here and I had planned a salad niçoise, but decided barbecued sausages ("saurizo" from Carrefour which I presume are chorizo sausages) salad including our own artichokes which OH was up preparing at 6am and a glass of wine, felt like a better idea.
wine

BBbevan Tue 19-Jul-16 18:31:13

Gosh! I would melt at 37 degrees. DH bought me some diabetic ice cream ( bless him), but I looked it up on the net and it's a real no-no. Full of artificial everything. So he will probably eat it
Just strawberries for me then

Anya Wed 20-Jul-16 06:03:29

We had our BBQ last night and the duck and fig kebabs were delicious, though the children ate the duck and left the figs hmm

Will definately have those again.

Made a very refreshing fruit salad with melon, peaches, kiwi and grapes. Yes, loads of fruit sugars but did help to quench the thirst in this heat. DH and I ate our sausages and beefburgers wrapped in lovely crispy and crunchy iceberg lettuce so very few carbs there.

Day 55/100

BBbevan Wed 20-Jul-16 06:16:02

Over half way Anya well done

Anya Wed 20-Jul-16 06:26:30

Thanks BB

Mamie Wed 20-Jul-16 06:37:05

Glad it worked Anya. Our saurizo sausages were delicious, will buy those again.
Off to the beach again this morning, will take lots of ice packs and pick up some fish from the quayside as well.
Too hot in the garden....
