No snack February
(103 Posts)Today is start day. Good luck everybody! I did a grocery shop yesterday and resisted the temptation to buy anything snacky. Thank you Ruby for starting us off, forgive me for muscling in, but I know you are an owl rather than a lark.
Brilliant idea, I will be joining in.
I'm aiming for a 'no snack' February too, but I'm also aiming to do the extra walking. After reading about Leslie Sansone's walking DVD on another thread I searched and found this on Youtube. I'm going to try this one later today. www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCe3ZS7pAC4
Hoping to kick start me into looking more like Kim Basinger instead of Anne Widdecombe!
tanith try the low carbing thread, you will find it helpful. In the meantime above ground veg is fine (veg that develops underground has stores of sugar, beetroot, potatoes, carrots etc.). Berries are brilliant, any type. Oranges, grapes, etc. Not so good.
I have been waiting for today.
The start of the GN snack free month.
I have spent the last few days hovering up the snacks already in the cupboards
So I have probably added to the pounds I want to shift!
I am also starting the slimming World diet.
I am hoping that all the lovely GNers on this thread will be my support ( & I theirs) & I will be able to manage to shed some pounds with out attending the meetings and which will also in turn save me bit of money!
My go to treat when on the SW diet are rice cakes
Are they allowed?
Lovely to see you back on GN ann
I find it okay at work as there is nowhere for me to get anything from unless I bring it from home. My biggest problem will be when I am pottering around in the house or reading. I like to have a few almonds or a bag of crisps to nibble on.
Thanks Izabella I'll take a look.
I was brought up on three meals a day, and we didn't eat between meals. There were very few exceptions, an occasional ice cream in the summer, but we never had sweets or snacks if we went to the cinema or theatre or any other time when we were out. We never felt deprived because that was our family eating pattern. I haven't ever deviated from it very much.
I am certainly not saying I never eat between meals, but I do stick to three meals a day, and tend only eat at any other times if I feel really hungry and then will tend to eat cheese rather than anything sweet, like biscuits or sweets as I have never had a very sweet tooth. I have got a tin of biscuits in the cupboard that has been there and opened for the last six months and I haven't eaten one.
I am curious to know about other peoples childhood family eating habits and how and why they started snacking.
Snacks for me mean anything eaten between meals (including fruit as it's my downfall and you can eat a lot of sugar that way)I put on 4lbs over Christmas and am desperate to reach my goal/healthy weight by the time I go on holiday in mid March (7lbs to go)
That's me in too. Was eating my last biscuit (digestive, so not that bad) when I noticed the thread. Have to do something about the 3lb gained through winter torpor and Christmas goodies.
Agree with MOnica and others here - a "snack" is something eaten between meals. It doesn't matter what it is - cake, crisps or fruit.
Lke MOnica, I wasn't allowed to eat between meals on the grounds that it would ruin my appetite. I follow this habit to this day and try to make sure meals fill me up and are sustaining.
If I am tempted by cake, crisps, bars or biscuits etc, I would aim to eat them at the end of my main meal as part of it, but I am usually too full up by then. But if I decide to leave "room" for them, I don't feel deprived of the odd treat that I enjoy.
I make exceptions when on holiday (eg ice cream).
Lots of snacks give a sugar rush that then leads to a dip in blood sugar leaving the eater wanting more. This is deliberate on the manufacturers' part. Don't fall for it!
If you succeed in having a snack-free February, why not aim for a snack-free life?!
I would like to join in.....however, as I have already eaten a bag of crisps and 3 ginger nuts this afternoon.....I will start tomorrow!
Cherrytree - on SW you can have anything as long as you count the Syns.
Harebrain - I didn't notice the date. Am thereforestarting Sugar Free February half a day late, had better sign up with BHF. In 2014 and 15 I drank only tap water for January and was sponsored for WaterAid. I didn't find it that difficult but Sugar Free is going to be a real challenge. Then No Choc March should be a doddle!! Roll on April 1st ?
Confession time for me too nanaK54!. I found a single Oreo biscuit in the cupboard so polished it off to free me from future temptation!
I never ate between meals when living with my parents. However, when I married we enjoyed the freedom of eating what we wanted when we wanted. I didn't become overweight though until middle age. I am hoping this month will break the snacking habit for good.
No chance! Just completed Dry January and am preparing to enjoy a nice glass of white with a cheesy snack called Twistees
Just back from my walk. Hit the 10,000 steps. My first instinct when I came home was to open the kitchen cupboard to see what I could nibble on. Instead I've had a glass of water and now watching The Chase with a cup of tea. Not long till evening meal!! I can do it!
I try very hard to avoid snacking sometimes I can be good for days and then I spoil it all by eating crisps, nuts.
So this month I am really going to give this a go.
Another 10,000 stepper here Sunlover. It is part of my daily routine now and I would miss it if I had to stop for any reason. I do the bulk of the steps early in the morning and, despite what they said last night on Trust Me I'm a Doctor, it makes me want a big breakfast whereas I could quite happily skip the meal completely a few years ago.
I found myself heading for the fridge a few times during the day yesterday, but stopped myself. How did everyone else get on?
Hi Shysal. I miss my walking too. Looking outside today I'm not sure I will get much of a walk done. I never eat breakfast. Usually hold out till lunch.
I managed not to snack once yesterday. I had to stop myself picking at stuff in the fridge a couple of times. It's a habit and I do it without thinking!!
I cooked roast pork yesterday and had a piece of crackling in my mouth without even thinking about it!! However I didn't have any with my dinner as a punishment.
Yesterday I had brunch, poached eggs and pancetta, at Carluccio's as a treat. I didn't want anything else until 7 pm then stir fry.
Today, I had muesli and fresh fruit at 8am and I could snack now, but I'm not going to! Just a cup of lemon green tea. Small portion of spag.bol. For lunch, as I'll be out this evening. (not eating).
I don't often snack between meals, but it is interesting to see if different eating patterns will affect to urge to snack between meals.
I did ok yesterday the only things I ate between meals were a smallish banana and two rich tea in the afternoon.
Saw my GP this morning to talk through my newly diagnosed Diabetes and I am now on 1 Metformin and a statin but he did put the wind up me good and proper when he said of people at my stage of Diabetes 30 in every 100 will suffer a heart attack within 10yrs.. a sobering thought. So the snacking really has to STOP!!
Looking on the bright side on day 3 of no snacks and smaller portions I've actually lost 3lbs which is incentivising me, not sure that's a word though.
Those with husbands who are still eating snacks, you need to tie them up and put them in their sheds for a month! You can throw some chocolates in on Valentines Day! ?
I've put some tips on the other thread. ?
Oh rubylady they might all think it's some of bondage - far too risky!
So far so good today - breakfast was just a banana, lunch tuna pasta and tomatoes - absolutely no snacking.....yet...
