Tell us how you are getting on

Luckylegs When my Dr told me my cholestorol was high (bad cholestorol, not the good sort!) I spent some time looking at saturated fat content of some of my regular foods that I use. I had a few surprises! I also reseaached which were the best alternatives for any highh saturated fat foods. Sainsburys Be Good to Yourself seems to be the lowest for quite a few things. Anyway since September I have been sing the "Better"! foods and thinking more carefully about saturated fat content generally and aiming to have no more than the recommended maximum for women of 20 grams per day. So far a bonus has been that I have lost 12lbs without doing anything else different atall ! I go back for another blood test at the beginning of December and really hoping that it works as I also don't want to go on statins if I can avoid it. Anyway you might find it helpful to do a similar exercise to mine in terms of researching saturated fat content in things you eat regularly etc

Not weighed myself since Friday, but today I put on my newly washed, straight legged jeans with no difficulty in doing them up. And, I could tuck my shirt in with no horrible bulge!
This way of eating definitely alters your shape. How are others finding it?

whitewave Tue 21-Nov-17 14:14:22

Since I last posted I’ve lost 1/2 stone,! But I have the flu and have hardly eaten anything for a week, and in any case it exits my body almost as quickly as it enters. I googled my symptoms and was told flu, so cough due to last up to 2 more weeks, and feeling like s....t the same.

I had the flu jab so been dead unlucky. Still the little silver lining is 1/2stone !!!

Friday Tue 21-Nov-17 14:19:36

I thought the flu jab was supposed to stop you getting flu? confused

whitewave Tue 21-Nov-17 14:24:09

Well it protects against a strain that the scientists think will be most prevelant that year, but not against every strain, so I’m unlucky. I hope DH doesn’t get it as I have to contact Dr as soon as he shows symptoms as he has a heart condition.

Friday Tue 21-Nov-17 14:26:22

Get well soon.

Jalima1108 Tue 21-Nov-17 14:27:19

Unlucky, poor you. I did have the flu jab yesterday, having not had one for 8 years (apparently, according to the nurse) because last time I was ill after. However, that was after a double dose of that year's vaccine and the pandemic(swine flu) vaccine.
I'm feeling a bit queasy but that could be psychological.

Jalima1108 Tue 21-Nov-17 14:27:53

But feeling a bit queasy has not damped down my appetite. hmm

whitewave Tue 21-Nov-17 15:14:43

Thanks friday

jalima I only had a very minor reaction this year.

jamsidedown Tue 21-Nov-17 16:55:19

Hello, would you all mind if I join in? You all sound so positive and supportive of each other and seem to be doing so well.

Jalima1108 Tue 21-Nov-17 17:00:16

DH is cooking this evening and I don't think it is going to be within the time-scale. I don't like to nag in case he downs tools.

Jalima1108 Tue 21-Nov-17 17:03:03

There was a thread about this year's flu jab which apparently does not cover the strain of this year's Australian flu although both the GP and nurse assured us it does. It has been a very nasty virus this year over there.

Wheniwasyourage Tue 21-Nov-17 18:05:41

whitewave, hope you get well soon, but congratulations on the weight loss. A silver lining indeed! I've been on this for just over a week and although I'm on a slow losing curve as I'm nearly at my target (about 2kg to go), I'm hoping for the best.

Jane10 Tue 21-Nov-17 18:55:22

jamsidedown of course you can join us and welcome!

jamsidedown Tue 21-Nov-17 19:55:34

Thank you Jane. I tried the 5:2 diet a couple of years ago and lost about one and a half stone -no idea what that is in kilos. The weight gradually crept back on and I’ve found it really hard to get back into 5:2 - so this sounds like it might be manageable. My worst downfall is snacking - cheese, nuts, etc. I’m hoping I can deal with this, you all sound impressively successful!

J52 Tue 21-Nov-17 20:05:13

Hi Jamsidedown, I know what you mean about the 5:2. This regime seems easier, hopefully for the same effect. Good luck.

Caro1954 Tue 21-Nov-17 22:04:36

I bought two new pairs of jeans today - size 10!!! Somebody commented up thread that this diet changed your shape and I agree because my weight hasn’t gone down yet.
I also had flu a few weeks ago - after having the flu jab for the first time confused.
Jamsidedown I did the 5:2 and lost weight but didn’t keep it off, I think you’ll find this one better.

jamsidedown Tue 21-Nov-17 22:53:41

Thanks J52 - is it working for you? I am thinking that the easiest way will be to skip breakfast, although I will miss my porridge!

jamsidedown Tue 21-Nov-17 22:54:56

Thank you Carol, well done on the jeans, I can’t see me ever being a size 10!

grannyactivist Tue 21-Nov-17 23:18:01

Having had virtually no exercise during the four months I've been ill I've been avoiding the scales. I finally plucked up the courage to face them on Sunday after returning from a week away and oh! my! gosh! I have put on soooo much weight!!!
As of yesterday I have begun the 16:8, 5:2, LCHF diet! I managed the LCHF diet for a year with fantastic results, but was seduced on my NZ holiday into eating savoury muffins and the slide into carbs became an avalanche. Add four months of enforced rest and the weight has piled on. I've bought myself a new Fitbit and am ready to conquer the belly flab with less food and more exercise. I shall let you know how I get on. smile

Jamsidedown, I don't eat until lunchtime either and was missing my oats, fruit and yoghurt breakfast until it dawned on me that I can just eat it at 1pm several days a week instead of my usual lunch. The bonus is a reduction in the amount of bread and cheese I'm eating!

NfkDumpling Wed 22-Nov-17 08:10:39

I’m having to give up. My hiatus hernia really isn’t appreciating the starve bit. I had been managing it without medication by eating five small meals/snacks a day and for a while the starve bit didn’t seem to be a problem but the reflux has been getting worse and worse over the last few days, so I’m going back to my original diet. It’ll be interesting to see whether the few pounds I’ve lost stay off. Back to calorie counting to keep stable. I will still lurk to see how you’re all doing. I lost several pounds in the beginning but then stabilised so I may try a partial 16:8 once the reflux is back under control.

J52 Wed 22-Nov-17 08:24:03

Sorry to hear that Nfk, hope the calorie counting continues to work for you.
I do think that losing weight is a matter of, the way that works for the individual.

Jane10 Wed 22-Nov-17 08:31:04

That's a shame nfk. Fair enough though under the circumstances. (How's your knee btw?)
I think I've plateaud a bit. Entirely my own fault. I know I'm not eating sensibly and I do still find myself eating out of habit rather than necessity. However, I'll stick to the hours. I've been missing my breakfast food favourites. Great idea to have them for lunch. Why didn't I think of that?!

NfkDumpling Wed 22-Nov-17 10:43:07

My new knee is great thanks Jane, but the other one is now a problem. I saw the doctor yesterday and am now waiting for an appointment for an x-ray. No 2 knee in the pipeline! How's yours?
