Moderate March

This is the follow-on thread to Frugal February. It doesn’t really matter what we call it though.

Just keeping us all on track. Welcome back those who made it through last month and either lost weight/inches or at least didn’t put any on ??

Continuing with the idea that this isn’t about drastic weight loss but slow and steady life-style change. And support for each other.

For newcomers who might like to jump on, this isn’t advocating any particular diet or eating regime. There’s no ‘one size fits all’ and everyone really knows what works best for them if they are being truly honest.

Thought if we tackle it a month at a time it would seem more manageable. So good luck Moderators.

I was (118) kg still am (113) kg very over weight but from mid Jan to now have managed to lose 5kg. I know I still have a very long way to go but I am having 1 Slim Fast every day and 1 meal and fruit. I am very low carbs as that is my downfall. In cold it is so hard. I am trying to keep my mind off food with winter Olympics and box sets. When warmer I will walk a few km each day. Keep going all, we can do it.

OldMeg Fri 02-Mar-18 22:34:47

grandmama 2lb in a month is perfect. Slow and steady and likely to be mainly fat rather than muscles. Keep going and that’s 24lb in a year which is getting on for 2 stone.

Newnanny 5kg is impressive. That’s quite a bit to lose in just 6 weeks.

I’ll confesx with all the bother I’ve had with British Gas this last 24 hours I’ve just eaten what was to hand, but as Tegan said in Frugal Feb one bad day isn’t the end of the world and I’ll just get back on track tomorrow.

That’s one of the lessons we are learning together - to get straight back on the wagon if we slip off. This weather doesn’t help as it’s not safe to,go out for a walk. Instead I’ve set a timer to go off every 15 minutes so I get up and go upstairs. Hands free, not using the hand rail. At least it’s some kind of a work out.

So pleased I have found this thread , can I join please . I am 69 years old with type 2 diabetes and have struggled with my weight over the years , any ideas or tips would be really helpful . I am trying to cut out the carbs , bread , pasta , rice and potatoes but feel very deprived at times ,

OldMeg Sat 03-Mar-18 06:55:16

Try not to feel deprived, at least not deprived when it comes to these foods. Concentrate on what you can eat.

And consider what being overweight actually deprives you of instead. It deprives you of your health. It stops you being able to wear what you would like to wear. It makes it harder to walk and breath easily, and so on. And it knocks your self image and self esteem.

I know someone who was humiliated at an airline check in. She was so grossly overweight that she was told she’d have to buy another ticket. Indeed when she came to my house she took up half of a big 3-seater leather sofa. She was a big woman anyway standing about about 5’ 9”.

But the airport incidence triggered something in her and she asked for bariatric surgery. She is now a svelte size 14 and her type 2 diabetes has gone. She is waiting for more surgery to remove loose skin, but I’ve never seen her happier. She’s a changed woman.

Now I doubt anyone on here is that overweight. But it was a revelation to me jist how much this lovely woman’s life was almost unbeatable because of her weight.

Why do I keep glancing at the title of this thread and keep thinking it is something to do with demonstrations. You know, the big march to Parliament tomorrow supporting all those who demand moderation hmm

OldMeg Sat 03-Mar-18 08:39:37

Strictly non political Monica and that’s how it will stay I hope.

Tegan2 Sat 03-Mar-18 12:05:10

Well, after eating some bread for a few days my stomach has ballooned out, so I'm definitely going to cut it out of my diet again.

M0nica Sat 03-Mar-18 12:29:17

So do I!

Maggieanne Sat 03-Mar-18 20:50:26

I can be quite greedy sometimes but I've found out one thing. I love my breakfast porridge and used a scoop measure, I realised that I was using double the amount that I should, (not my fault, they made the measure too big!!!). Now, I've cut down to nearly the right amount and found that I don't get hungry as quickly as I did before! Hoping that gives me some help, eat less, feel less hungry, it's got to work, surely?

Tegan2 Sat 03-Mar-18 21:28:54

I love porridge but it gives me terrible wind blush.

Hello everyone. I managed to lose 3kg and am very pleased. I do a lot of walking and I mainly cut my quantities (I use a smaller plate). I also try and eat food that’s as unprocessed as possible. If I’m at work late or can’t make dinner, I choose a “ping ting”, quick, easy and I can see what’s in it. Friend brought some strawberries and cream to work last night. In fairness, it was low fat and no sugar cream but I know I would have eaten it even if it wasn’t ?. I did save some money but spent it on lovely half price sheet set.

seacliff Sun 04-Mar-18 08:23:31

I'd like to join you all please. I joined slimming world on a free 12 week doctors referral. I'm ashamed to say I'd got so big and unhealthy, it was affecting my mobility.

I am doing well so far, but I know after the first few weeks it's easy to fall off the wagon. I'm veggie, and don't really enjoy cooking. I'm having to plan ahead and do some batch cooking. It's a big change for me.

My next challenge is to do some exercise. I had a Lesley Sansom walking DVD for Christmas, which I haven't yet opened. I WILL today!

So many of you seem to be doing really well, it's inspiring.

OldMeg Sun 04-Mar-18 09:56:59

That’s a good loss MesMopTop. Smaller portions are a must. If you still feel hungry set a timer for 23 minutes exactly and don’t eat anything else until it ‘pings’ . Chances are after 23 minutes your brain will have registered your stomach has been fed.

Welcome seacliffe and anyone else who wants to join. Don’t just disappear off the thread because you’ve had a bad day/week. Just pick yourself up and start again.

Well, I'm still stuck at the same weight; have three weeks to get myself sorted before I go away for a while [and I never lose weight when I'm away]. Will go back to the gym on Tuesday [hearing test tomorrow; will have to spend the whole afternoon in town and will do a lot of walking]. At least the weight isn't going up. But I've still ate a slice of bread today which I must stop doing.

Bluebell123 Sun 04-Mar-18 18:09:21

Tegan2
I have a couple of friends who used to feel bloated after a slice of bread. They found gluten free bread was the answer for them. Bread is my downfall ( among other things!) so I freeze it and only have the occasional piece of toast with griiled tomatoes or mushrooms on top. I found a lovely wholemeal sliced sugar free loaf.

After jaunty January( a cruise for our 50th), and feel hungry all the time February, may I be a late starter at meagre March? I shall rejoin my slimming club on Tuesday but have started this weekend. I’ve had too many ‘last day before I start’ blowouts over the last few weeks.
Sorry slip of the keypad.. Moderate March!

MesMopTop Mon 05-Mar-18 04:19:39

Haha, meagre March ? Hello Seacliff, hardest part I think is addressing the issue so like the rest of us, onwards and downwards. I find walking rhe best excercise and try to do as much as I can. However, after all the snow and bad weather not so doable. Just had my lunch, some delicious fresh fruit thats in season here. How I love nectarines and peaches. Anyway, have to go. That’s the two minute warning from OH as we have to be somewhere very soon. See you all later ?

Tegan2 Mon 05-Mar-18 22:11:31

Had a hearing test in town today and had several hours to kill before I met up with the S.O. so walked and walked. Have just had a latte and a flapjack and am now going to have my turmeric milky drink before I go to bed. Still the same weight, but definitely thinner; clothes far more comfortable. Going to the gym tomorrow. Must have walked a lot as my feet are killing me....

OldMeg Tue 06-Mar-18 16:18:44

Just checking in and seeing who’s still in board.

OldMeg Tue 06-Mar-18 16:18:53

On board...

Bluebell123 Tue 06-Mar-18 18:17:30

On board and battling on. Struggling with cravings for evening snacks. Will have celery stuffed with low fat Philly this evening though.

MargaretinNorthant Tue 06-Mar-18 18:21:37

On board... I have lost 3lb in my first week, just by cutting portions and counting calories. Get a bit hungry in the late evenings though, last night I had a few grapes and an apple.

Tegan2 Tue 06-Mar-18 19:10:15

Got to the gym/sauna today and was chuffed to find that I'd cracked the 10st mark on the scales at the gym. Also, as usual, the chat in the sauna is often about diet/exercise/dieting etc. One guy had lost 6 st, started to put it back on again and is now back on track with slimming world, so we all do it, don't we sad.

tassiegran Tue 06-Mar-18 21:19:02

On board.

OldMeg Wed 07-Mar-18 08:55:28

Had famil round last night so made a huge beef stew with horseradish dumplings as per Mary Berry. I made the stew the night before and the grandchildren helped make the dumplings (I didn’t put horseradish in theirs).

An old fashioned meal. The stew had lots of shallots, carrots and mushrooms in it and I served it with Savoy cabbage.

No wonder people were thinner in those days. A smallish portion filled me and everybody up. And didn’t feel hungry all night.

This has been my approach and it’s working. Good old fashioned food made from scratch with loads of vegetables.
