Prince Harry and a vegan diet.

According to Jilly Cooper, writing in the Mail on Sunday - so it must be true, Meghan put Harry on a clean eating regime in the run up to their wedding and he now follows a mostly vegan diet.

Nothing wrong with that but it had me thinking back to their engagement interview when he talked about proposing while cooking roast chicken.

I do hope he enjoyed it! grin

Maybe we'll have to go back to being more self sufficient, growing our own, raising chickens or hunting the odd rabbit, as industrial scale farming becomes less sustainable. I'm sure further dependence on processed food is not the way forward for health or the planet.

The world needs a moratorium on breeding people, then maybe there would be more habitat to sustain us all and the animals. It seems we are the rats in the maze experiment, squabbling and blaming. If no humans ate other animals, would they not cease to exist as we would have no need for them?

Eglantine21 Mon 30-Jul-18 17:44:11

Oh yes, I agree with that too Carol. Too many people. Now who’s going to agree to not having any grandchildren..........

Farm animals have been bred by humans and aren't "natural" in that sense, their wild equivalents would still exist, in as far as human activity hasn't made them extinct. Should animals only exist if humans "need" them?

Have never seen a vegan who looks healthy.
It may not be true about Harry eating this kind of diet but in any case Meghan needs to eat a little more, her stick thin arms and legs look in danger of breaking.

Carolpaint Mon 30-Jul-18 18:11:44

Animals very few would exist that we have no "need" of, humans are a very destructive species. I do eat wild. I eat all I can of any animal. No I am not a vegetarian or a vegan, never find the dishes tasty or filling enough, possibly many vegans or vegetarians do feel superior to us carnivores, sometimes I reflect that many mask eating disorders. As for the grandchildren as my daughter will attest, the news is not met with wild enthusiasm. I am intrigued at how much criticism this all is going to stir.

You don't always know what people eat when you see them do you?
How about Venus Williams and Lewis Hamilton ? Look healthy to me.

I don't feel superior to carnivores - some of my family are carnivores! I see it as a choice I'm lucky enough to have , having witnessed horrible animal cruelty at a young age which turned my stomach, and I couldn't face eating the result on a plate. Others make their choices, thats up to them.

I've always thought of Veganism as an eating disorder, less than 1% of the population are vegan and the activists get far too much attention, they are also dangerous, criminal action often takes place.
The U.K. has the best animal welfare standards in the world there is no reason for harassing butchers or animal producers.
However if Harry or anyone else wants to eat a Vegan diet it's not a problem to me but there is no justification for converting anyone else.
If we're talking about the planet, it biggest risk is population, it's human activity that's reducing wildlife and polluting the environment not animal production.

I have known three vegans ( all women) and they were thin and very, very pale ( but obviously not the two that you mention above suzied)
Good post Diana my views too.

There has been a huge growth in the number of British vegans in recent years. About 3.5 million people in the UK are now vegans.

varian Mon 30-Jul-18 20:22:50

I am not a Vegan, but I know many, including some members of my family who are very healthy and sporty with seemingly boundless energy. None of them are pale and thin.

suzied Mon 30-Jul-18 20:25:35

lemongrove 3 people isn't much of a sample. I know more than 3 people who eat meat who are obese and have heart problems, doesn't mean they all do. I know quite a few vegans who are sporty and healthy with low cholesterol, blood pressure etc, again doesn't mean they all are but its quite possible. As for all vegans being criminals with an eating disorder... talk about sweeping generalisations. Theres so much more vegan food and options available its becoming mainstream. Its much easier to cut down on meat and dairy, (if you want to - you don't have to) and guess what , you don't have to be a thin criminal.

lemongrove Mon 30-Jul-18 20:29:53

grin
I can only speak of those I know.

lemongrove Mon 30-Jul-18 20:31:26

I really don’t think veganism is becoming mainstream, although vegetarianism is.

Iam64 Mon 30-Jul-18 20:32:09

I have a number of close friends who have become vegan over the past couple of years. They look very healthy, don't seem to pick up colds etc and one in particular, has become a very good cook as a result of having to learn to do more than steak and chips. My vegan friends all gave up meat and dairy because of the cruelty animals are subjected to before they end up on our tables.

I still eat a bit of meat but most of the meals we cook are meat free. I haven't eaten pork for a while because pigs are such lovely animals yet so very badly treated in the industrial farming industry. We have a new organic, free range small farm opened half a mile away, I may try their products. Then again, I may find I'm increasing my vegetarian options and continuing to decrease any meat.

lemongrove Mon 30-Jul-18 20:32:31

Does anyone actually know if the report about Harry is true....so much fake news about!

Iam64 Mon 30-Jul-18 20:34:00

Oh for the edit button. Why on earth do some people believe its possible for one partner to impose any kind of diet on another? Did anyone see the research from Exeter university which suggests that people who have a similar world view are likely to have a more successful lifelong relationship. who Knew? grin

lemongrove Mon 30-Jul-18 20:35:10

Sorry Iam but I have been told that a few examples of veganism are invalid.
I know some who are stick thin and horribly pale, you know some who are hale and hearty, do they cancel each other out?

merlotgran Mon 30-Jul-18 20:37:58

Some great posts!

Food production is close to my heart whether it be animal or vegetable and I agree that cutting down on meat is good advice for all but celeb fads always seem to be about self promotion. At least there will be no accompanying fitness video in this case - we hope.

Maybe Meghan is already working on Prince Andrew in readiness for walking Eugenie up the aisle. grin

lemongrove Mon 30-Jul-18 20:38:45

Actually, an extended family member ( male 30) did have vegetarianism imposed on him by his very forceful wife, he went along with it for an easy life, poor chap.

Iam64 Mon 30-Jul-18 21:00:55

lemon - couldn't your extended family member cook himself some meat if he missed it so much? I worked on a team of 15, 3 of us were vegetarian. All 3 cracked when we sent out for bacon butties as our Friday morning treat.

I do accept your point about my hale and healthy vegans maybe being cancelled out by your thin, pale and one vegans.

oldbatty Mon 30-Jul-18 21:07:32

I'm sorry but I think she looks horribly thin. The camera is supposed to add pounds?
Where is the muscle tone on her legs?

lemongrove Mon 30-Jul-18 21:10:54

No Iam the smell wouldn’t be allowed and he doesn’t cook anyway.grin
Who knows if he nips into a Mcdonalds at lunchtime though.

oldbatty Mon 30-Jul-18 21:17:03

Whats the difference between a flexitarian and eating whatever you fancy?
