3 years 7 months ago on 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

We now have a small band of ‘regulars’ called Pears who have joined our ranks and they have brought new ideas and support. Many thanks girls what would I do without you all. I am so grateful you have stayed so loyal and been such good friends to us all.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.

Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.

Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my way of life.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

Our new mantra is - Eat Less for Life.

So Onward and Downward Pears ??

Thanks for that info Whiff I’m 62 and grew up eating some very odd shaped veg grown in my dad and granddads gardens, often found the odd caterpillar lurking in my cabbage too!

Enjoy the wedding Doodledog I hope you all have a wonderful & memorable day. Looks like the sun will be shining sunshine.

NanKate Fri 13-May-22 07:52:19

Hello Doodledog what a special weekend you have ahead. Enjoy every minute of it.

Whiff gives such good advice. She has been through the ups and downs of dealing with weight issues, so can speak from experience. Firstly I agree with her not to put a timeline on weight loss. My mantra of ‘Eating Less for Life’ seems to me to be a good way forward. Of course there will be times when you over indulge, you are human, it happens.

I sympathise about your thyroid issues, it is a constant battle for me and every time the Consultant reduces my thyroxine I put on a few pounds. It’s a bummer.

The weather seems set to be good this weekend (dependent on where you live). Enjoy yourself, have fun and we will be here for when you return to our supportive group of Losers.

Doodledog you have a wonderful time at your son's wedding. Forget about eating less for life and start afresh on Monday. The important thing as been said many times before it's a marathon not a sprint. Don't set yourself time limit in which to lose the weight or a set amount you want to lose a week. I did that for decades and failed everytime. As women we put to much pressure on ourselves throughout our lives. No matter what age we are we are juggling several things at once. And if you are like me put everyone first their wants and needs .

I think we all get to a point in our lives which makes us stop and think right what do I want . You would think it was when my husband died in 2004 for me but it wasn't . Still had people dependant on me . It's only after my mom died and I got jaundice in 2017 and was seriously ill and all I could do was think. Don't recommend having jaundice but it was my wake up call. We all have them in our lives it depends whether we notice them and act on them.

I decided I only wanted 3 things move house, lose weight and get fit. I have always been a planner so pen and paper out and made lists of how I was going to achieve these things.

First thing we all must do and I am still guilty of this is don't beat yourself up if you first fail at what you want to achieve. Perfect explain eating 2 packets of biscuits last week and putting weight on for the second week. I know it's a blip but still annoyed with myself I let it get to me. But if it takes me another year to get to my target weight so be it. I look and feel healthier than I have ever been. I am happy. Since moving my life has its ups and downs but we all do. Moving cost me something but that wasn't my choice others made that decision. But I have gained things I never dreamed of.

I know for me my comfort eating wasn't the answer when I was a child but it was my way to cope with being bullied. We all have things in our lives which sent us on the path of over eating . But it's never to late to change. You just have to decide what do I want? And that's the important thing I . As mom's ,wives, widows and all our other labels we put ourselves last . It's they and them. For once it needs to be I. Not easy to change a lives worth of thinking but for me I didn't want to look back on my life and have what if's. You need to ask what do I want and go for it.

Sorry if this is preachy but started writing this at just before 5am and early mornings I tend to reflex on things.

Better sign off as I have rambled off enough . Have a great weekend all of you no matter what you are doing. ?

Doodledog Fri 13-May-22 00:23:58

Well, it's my son's wedding this weekend, and I am at least as heavy as when I started.

It's my own fault, as I haven't been strict enough with either exercise or calories, but it's so difficult when asthma stops me from exercising and my thyroid slows my metabolism. I've taken my eye off the ball, though, and feel guilty and unattractive.

Anyway, I am going to enjoy myself this weekend, and get back on the diet when we get back. Maybe I'll aim for Christmas this time, and try to stick to a stricter regime. I have a new inhaler for asthma, and it is working to allow me to get about more, so I'll build in a target to build up my steps per day until I'm doing 10,000. I used to do that easily when I was working, before my asthma took a downward turn.

I'll start by reading back on the thread and picking up any tips that will help - I'm determined not to just sit here getting fatter.

Whiff Thu 12-May-22 17:57:51

SachaMac that's the normal price for their

small box. They do medium and large. Just veg or veg and fruit. The quality is better than you can get in the shops . Plus saves waste. I am 64 so there was not such thing as perfect veg growing up. Cucumbers had a bend and we had a special bag for potatoes as they always had soil on them . It was a sad day when everything became uniform. No more comedy carrots ?.

Just google Odd box and enter your postcode to see if they operate in your area. It's delivered over night. So I put a large plastic box to put the box in to protect it from rain or animals .

SachaMac Thu 12-May-22 10:54:22

I will investigate these Whiff, looks good, is that the normal price or an introductory offer.

Whiff Thu 12-May-22 08:44:44

It's great to see more people joining the fruit barrow. My daughter told me about Odd Box . You can have it weekly or fortnightly. I had my first one today cost £11.49 having it fortnightly. This is want was in it. Good variety and excellent quality. The lettuce is a living one so going to pot it up. Never tried kholrabi but looking forward to trying it.

SachaMac Wed 11-May-22 13:17:36

Hi all, hope your weeks going well. Kissngate I’m sure you’ll do well. There are quite a few You Tubers doing SW who post some great recipes & tips, might be worth a look.

Lilliesmun I used to use Fitness Pal which is free for the basic app but I now use the Nutracheck app but there is a small annual charge. I paid around around £25 per year but feel it is well worth it, it’s a great app with facility to scan foods and is of course much cheaper than paying for Slimming groups, especially when like me you get tempted to buy their recipe books, chocolate bars etc. I will check out the NHS app Shirleyw not seen that one.

I’m doing ok this week but went to see Strictly the Professionals at the theatre in Nottingham last night with friends. We had a nice pre show meal & I’m afraid I succumbed to creme brûlée for pud, that alone was 660 calories!! I’m back on track today!!!

Shirleyw Wed 11-May-22 04:17:23

Hi lilliesmum, the nhs weight loss app is free and is very good, you also log in activity as well as calories. I think nankate follows it too.

Hi kissengate, good you found us.

kissngate Tue 10-May-22 19:46:19

Hi Pears and Apples I'm joining your band of losers.
I started dieting two weeks ago. Not joined a group but roughly following the Slimming World ethos. I need to lose 24lb so far I've lost 2lb only 22 to go. I've cut out cakes, chocolate and rich puddings will see how it goes. Weigh myself every Monday will keep you all updated.

cornergran Tue 10-May-22 18:42:58

That’s just a blip whiff, don’t be tough on yourself.

Congratulations to all with weight loss, hang on in there if it’s a plateau. Life got in the way for me this week, we’ve had three nights in a hotel with far too much food and wine. Not sure what you’ll all think of this but I’ve decided not to weigh myself until the end of the week, let the more helpful eating pattern settle in again. I’m not sure if it’s sensible or avoidance

I’m delighted I found this thread. Be kind to yourselves everyone.

Whiff Tue 10-May-22 15:44:30

Lilliesmum79 glad you found us. NanKate just celebrated the 4th anniversary of starting this thread. Your post is short you should see how long some of my posts are .

I count calories but do it the old fashioned way with pen and paper. If you read some of the previous posts you see we fight the battle against weight in different ways. And you may get some ideas which is the best way for you to go.

NanKate renamed dieting eating less for life. And that's a perfect way to think of it. This is my 5th year but I am still at it. Some weeks I lose ,some weeks stay the same and the last 2 weeks put on but I haven't given up. Don't set yourself time limits or amounts you want to lose every week it's to much pressure. Remember it's a marathon not a sprint.

Brilliant loss's Madgran, Sarahmob,Shirley and SachaMac.

Lilliesmum79 Tue 10-May-22 13:11:59

Hi everyone I've been following SlimmingWorld for about 6yrs. I did lose nearly 4 stone but after a knee replacement and then covid alot of it has gone back on. Ve rejoined a new group but I'm just yoyo dieting so not working. Ired that calorie counting is the way to lose weight and keep it off. Can anyone recommend a free app that is good and easy to use? Sorry for the long post.

NanKate Mon 09-May-22 17:54:30

Thanks All we are a small but perfectly formed group of LOSERS ???????

SachaMac Mon 09-May-22 08:19:36

Morning all, hope everyone is ok, I have some positive news on the scales this morning. I have just popped on & to my delight have lost 3lbs smile after feeling disappointed with last weeks result I am very happy. This puts me back on track after my Easter gain. I have stopped buying chocolate & have cut right down on biscuits & savoury treats but have tried to save enough calories for a little treat in the evenings.

I totally empathise with you succumbing to the biscuits Whiff, they’re hard to resist and if you’ve had a stressful week it’s such a comfort to have a nice cuppa & dip into the biscuit tin. We all have weeks when our willpower just isn’t enough to stop that urge. I hope you have a better week.

I did buy some Border Chocolate Viennese Whirls this week (just to have if anyone popped in of course) My youngest DD called with the GC yesterday & we opened them, such nice biscuits & at just under 90 calories not too bad, there aren't many in a pack so I only got the one but really enjoyed it. I made overnight Grape Nuts last night so that’s my breakfast today, very nice and also filling.
Happy Anniversary NanKate & everyone, I’m a late comer but I’m so pleased I found your thread. Have a good week all, hope the suns shining where you are sunshine

Shirleyw Mon 09-May-22 03:14:41

That 2lb will soon come off whiff. Hope you have a less stressful week.

Happy belated birthday to us , can’t believe it’s 4 years.

I’m so happy the weather is warming up, so nice going walking without having to put on coats it’s been a long old winter.

Sarahmob Sun 08-May-22 19:02:22

Good evening everyone and happy birthday to us!
Half a pound off this week, but that might wiggle back on yet as this maintaining business sees me fluctuating a bit. But I am holding it where I want it. I saw someone today that I haven’t seen since the very first lockdown - she said she didn’t recognise me so that made me beam.
Hope you all have a good week ?

Madgran77 Sun 08-May-22 16:31:19

Lost a pound! Yay! Going away on Tuesday though ... hmm!! Little ups and downs are not the end of the world, I just remember Whiffs amazing achievement...slow and steady and determinedly positive about getting there . I admire that!

fourormore Sun 08-May-22 13:54:23

Thank you NanKate for starting us off and keeping us going!
Today is 'Sinday' so a proper piece of cake might just be necessary!!!
Here's to another year of ongoing support - thank you!

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY PEARS AND APPLES.

It’s our 4th Anniversary today. ????

Who would have thought that our lovely group would still be together, supporting each other through the Ups and Downs of weight loss.

I really appreciate your ongoing support.

Hugs to you ALL.

Kate

NanKate Sun 08-May-22 11:02:40

Whiff I don’t call 2 lbs a disaster I call it a blip. You are human and stress affects us in so many negative ways. Just start afresh don’t punish yourself. ?

fourormore Sun 08-May-22 09:28:56

Minus 0.4lb this week - I'm happy with that as although I've walked a lot I have also sinned at times! Would have preferred minus 4.0lb but that's a dream!
Staying the same last week was also an achievement but if we gain a bit we don't give up! We are all human!
As Whiff says - every loss is a win!
Good luck everyone as we start another week of temptation - we have several 'meals out' this week so will have to do the odd marathon in between!!!

Whiff Sun 08-May-22 09:24:44

Well had a diaster week put on 2 lb. At least I know why. Brought 2 packs of biscuits and eat a pack a day. Had suppers ok it was porridge but with my jam. Had to do something thing this week that has stressed me out but it had to be done. Just waiting to see if there will be any fall out. But it was the right thing to do. I am a mom and nannie so had to do it. So I went back to old habits and of course feel awful I did it. But today is a new day and new start.

Will go into the garden and work extra hard and put more effort into my exercises . And hopefully next week my weight will be down.

I have given myself a good talking to and will not be tempted again . No biscuits after exercise class this week .

Hope everyone has had a good week. ?

Whiff Thu 05-May-22 20:55:34

Shirley forgot to say every loss is a win. I am happy with quarter of a pound.
