3 years 7 months ago on 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

We now have a small band of ‘regulars’ called Pears who have joined our ranks and they have brought new ideas and support. Many thanks girls what would I do without you all. I am so grateful you have stayed so loyal and been such good friends to us all.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.

Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.

Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my way of life.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

Our new mantra is - Eat Less for Life.

So Onward and Downward Pears ??

Hi all & a Happy Easter. I’ve not been around as I have been away for a week with family in Monmouthshire, the first holiday since losing my DH last year & although it’s been lovely he has been very much on my mind. Whiff I can resonate with so much of what you say, I’m sure that awful sense of loss will never leave me either. Ive recently joined a craft group & have taken up crocheting so that’s keeping me busy & Im hoping it will help me cut down on the nibbling & snacking in the evenings.
We had some delicious meals whilst away and I enjoyed every mouthful, throw all the Easter goodies into the equation and I’m afraid I’ve now gone totally off the rails. This lovely weather has made me realise I need to reign myself in before the summer wardrobe comes out. You can hide so much under big baggy jumpers but summer clothes are not very forgiving.
*Violet Sky*I hope you continue to feel better, have a great week everyone, enjoy this sunny spell.

Sarahmob Sun 17-Apr-22 23:20:28

Good evening to all my fellow pears, a maintaining week for me this week, but as I’m now under my personal target weight, I’m happy with that. Some chocolate today and a meal out last night celebrating my wedding anniversary might push the scales up a bit though, but we’ll see. I’ve just got back from the cinema, we went to see Operation Mincemeat which was an excellent film and one I’d heartily recommend.
Have a good week and enjoy the rest of the bank holidays.

Doodledog Mon 18-Apr-22 02:00:51

Well, the wedding is nearly upon us! I have bought two dresses - one to wear on the day, and another for the party which is happening a week later. Both are in a stretch fabric so in the unlikely event that I lose weight they will still fit. I am pleased with the dresses, but not pleased with myself for not losing weight.

My thyroid levels are all over the place, so I doubt very much that last minute weight loss will happen, though.

NanKate Mon 18-Apr-22 02:10:42

Good morning Doodledog why are we both awake at 2.00am?

I’m pleased you are sorted with your wedding clothes, even if they aren’t the size you would have preferred.

I too have problems with my thyroid and am trying to persuade the specialist not to reduce my tablets AGAIN!

Now is the time to concentrate on enjoying the wedding and then come back to us Pears afterwards to renew your battle with weight reduction.

Will try now to get back to sleep ?

cornergran Mon 18-Apr-22 06:06:54

Woken by a blackbird singing it’s heart out I’ve dropped in to report continuing stability which I’m delighted with as there has been a hot cross bun or three.

Walking more now the weather is milder, pottering in the garden and generally spending time outside. It must all help. Thank you everyone for your support.

Delighted you’ve found dresses to be happy in doodkedog, I’m not sure when the wedding is but do enjoy every minute.

Health issues don’t help weight loss along, my Mum’s weight bounced around because of an erratic thyroid so I do understand the impact doodle and nankate. Whether thyroid, pain, mobility issues or a myriad of other conditions it’s an extra hurdle to overcome when trying to change eating patterns.

Good luck everyone. Please don’t be tough on yourself if there’s a little more of you or if like me you’re stuck, a solvent will be along soon smile.

Good morning…..have ‘bit the bullet’ after not being on scales for a fortnight, had too good a holiday along the coast,,,….up 7 lbs???…still, back to reality now….shall be well happy if I can knock off most of it by next week.

Hope you are all enjoying the lovely weather we are having and that you all had a good Easter.

Whiff Mon 18-Apr-22 08:06:39

SachaMac I am sorry I didn't realise you had only lost your husband so recently. I went on holiday a year after my husband died not because I wanted to but he made promise to . I don't know about you but did a lot of firsts that holiday. I was very lucky my darling man loved me when I was 11st and when I topped 21st which was the heaviest I ever got. Then hovered around 19st for decades. I laugh at myself a lot when I look at myself now and know he would still love me and be proud of me. As your husband would be of you.

My husband could eat what he liked and stay the same weight me I look at a cream cake side ways and put a pound on. Yum a cream cake haven't had one for years.

Grief and if you have a long term illness can stop you lose weight. But if you are determined and don't set yourself a time limit and realise it's a marathon not a sprint you can do it . And with me if I lose ,stay the same or put weight on it's ok . Like NanKate says it's eating less for life. And this is my 5th year of doing that it's become part of who I am. And I am very happy with that. If it takes another year to get to 11st which is my aim so be it . I will still be overweight for my height but after decades of being morbidly obese my skin isn't magically going to shrink and become tight. I have flabby bits now and no amount of exercise with tighten it up. It annoys me no end when people in the public eye lose large amounts of weight and make out their skin has tighten up with exercise. That's why I admire Lisa Reily she freely admits to plastic surgery to remove excess skin and infections caused by the operations also how expensive it is to have done.

Sarah happy anniversary hope you enjoyed your meal out. Operation Mincemeat is a remake of an old film and of course was a book. I remember watching the old film but can't remember who was in it. Think the lovely Colin Firth is in the new version. Last time I went to see a film was a remake of Man from Uncle with Henry Cavill gosh that was a long time ago. My local cinema has an oldie viewing for a £1 every few weeks but never fancy any of the film's on offer.

Doodledog glad you have found to nice dresses . Did manage to lose 3 st before each of my children's weddings but as I was still a funny shape wore a top and skirt. And put the weight back on after each one. But still had a brilliant time at each one.

NanKate I hope you win your fight with your consultant. You know what your body needs stick to your guns.

Cornernan eating less for life is a hard thing to do especially if you love your food and are a good cook. But it's a life long commitment . So don't be hard on yourself. Take it one day at a time. Look on every morning as a new start if you had a bad day the day before. Rome wasn't built in a day and changing eating habits of a life time takes time to get used to. So enjoy yourself. What helped me I let go of the feeling of guilt if I put on or stayed the same. As guilt is a destructive emotion where losing weight is concerned.

I hear I go again as my brother says I have diarrhoea of the mouth as I am a chatty box and that results in my ramblings on here ????.

Have a great week pears .

Doodledog Mon 18-Apr-22 08:47:48

Thanks all.

I hope you got a lie in, NanKate smile.

The dresses are both from a brand called Cesca which specialises in clothes for ‘curvier’ women, and go from size 12 to 26. I got them in John Lewis, but they also have a website. I hadn’t heard of the brand before, but have bookmarked the site for future reference.

Dorsetcupcake61 Mon 18-Apr-22 09:09:22

Hi everyone. Lovely to hear how everyone getting on?.
I stepped on the scales on Friday and was amazed to have lost 2 and a quarter pounds! After a few Easter treats not sure how I will fare next week!
Hope everyone enjoying the lovely weather and has a good week.

SachaMac Mon 18-Apr-22 09:37:06

Thank you for your kind, wise and inspirational words Whiff, your comments are very much appreciated. smile. Carpe Diem everyone sunshine

Doodledog Mon 18-Apr-22 10:51:40

Oops. In case anyone is interested, the dress brand I mentioned is Chesca, not Cesca.

Flaxseed Mon 18-Apr-22 18:18:24

Whiff
I love those Lindt bunnies! Glad you enjoyed yours. I have no chocolate in the house, but have spent a lot of time with DGS1 who is always offering me snacks etc. I have no willpower to refuse.
Violet I am glad you are feeling a little better and enjoyed your egg.
Four I definitely feel like I am in the pickle jar! But I have done a meal plan for the rest of this week so I am hoping I can stick at that and start to make progress (again!)
Sacha I’m glad you had a nice time away. I can only imagine how hard it was.
Sarahmob - well done on achieving your goal. I am going to look that film up. We haven’t been to the cinema since before the pandemic!
Doodledog I am sure you will look a million dollars. I am going to look up that brand.
Shirley I avoid the scales when I know I have put on. But seeing the reality does give you an incentive doesn’t it?
I hope everyone has had a lovely Easter. I am finally back to work tomorrow after two weeks off. It’s been a stressful two weeks as DD2 has had two readmissions to hospital after a C Section 2.5 weeks ago. One because baby was unwell, followed by a longer stay because she was very unwell. Myself and her self employed other half have been keeping things afloat and trying to keep DGS1 entertained. I’ll be glad to go back to work for a rest!
I thought the stress would have made me lose weight - but no confused

Whiff Wed 20-Apr-22 04:42:03

Dorset well done with the loss. Hope you enjoyed the Easter treats. Glad to say all the hot cross buns are now gone. But did enjoy the treat.

Hope you all have had the sunshine.

NanKate Sat 23-Apr-22 15:23:20

Hi Folks. I hear Michael Moseley the Health Guru is on Radio 4 at 9.30 on Wednesday giving snippets of advice on keeping healthy. It can also be heard on BBC Sounds. I’m going to give it a whirl.

Shirleyw Sun 24-Apr-22 06:25:32

oh thanks for that nankate....do you mean 'just one thing' ? he talks about certain beneficial health ideas for 15mins...i listened to the one about beetroot...i intend to listen to the rest. interesting listening.

Allsorts Sun 24-Apr-22 06:50:54

I wanted to get down to 10.4 when I began my healthier eating. 14 weeks approximately after beginning with quite a few guilty snacks, mainly weekends, sometimes adding a pound or two, I am now 10.12, it’s as far as I usually get. The nurse who said that for my height I should be under 10 stone couldn't accept for me that was totally unrealistic. I think eating the portion sizes I now have and with several veggie days, I might lose a couple more pounds, but I would doubt ever getting to 10.4. I can accept that I just don’t want to go over 11st again, but I will never be sylph like. The nurse that weighs me is probably 14 stone and thirty years younger than me, but obviously I would never comment on that to her. I am just happy I can get into my clothes easier, but know if I ever start on the biscuits and cakes etc as I used to, it will all come back on in the blink of an eye, so this way of eating is for life now with the odd over indulgence and a few treats, otherwise if becomes a total grind, It has been such an incentive coming on here knowing others going through the same, according to my reckoning I’m about 8 lbs overweight but more than 16lbs. is the view of the medical profession.

NanKate Sun 24-Apr-22 08:32:56

Hello Allsorts I realised that the weight the medical profession suggested for me was just not going to happen so I decided that I would be happy with 10 stone and worked towards that. I felt such relief when I knew the weight I was aiming for was doable. So I suggest you choose your own target.

I’ve have recently gone up a few pounds I believe because my thyroid tablets have been reduced, so now I am working towards 10 stone again.

Shirley yes I think Dr M is talking about one aspect of health at a time, but I will report back when I have heard the programme.

Now where are you Whiff you appear to have gone off the radar. Are you OK ?

Whiff Sun 24-Apr-22 10:56:31

NanKate still here. My weight has stayed the same this week. But since I have been on the tablets that stopped my jerks and seizures I have been setting myself challenges. Wednesday I decide to walk to the village it's called a village but really size of a small town. As I needed a bit of shopping. But I did it . Had to keep to a steady pace as the pavement were cracked by a lot of tree roots . So no heart points but did walk 3.13km. Got my shopping and treated myself to a hot chocolate and cake. Caught the bus back. Was achy when I got back. My daughter pointed out I could take a different route that wasn't tree lined. So will try again another week as fully booked this. Exercise class starts again on Wednesday.

My next challenge is there is an entrance to a valley a couple of roads away so am going to walk down and have a walk in the valley.

I like setting myself different challenges sometimes little things sometimes bigger ones.

Since not having the jerks and seizures I am more confident going further a field . Still need my trusty walking stick as my balance can be a bit off.

Been getting the garden sorted and have planted french bean and sunflower seeds they are in my greenhouse.

Went on my first Easter egg hunt the Thursday before good Friday. At the Methodist church near me with my daughter and grandson's . She went off with the oldest while I push the youngest in his buggy. He pointed to a tree and I found an egg. Really he was pointing at the tree the egg was a bonus. One of the other moms gave him on she found. Each child could collect 20 eggs. But my daughter just let my grandson's have 20 between them as they are 4 and 18 months. There where biscuits to decorate and bunny shapes to colour plus games. Lots of children it was fun . There is a park near my bungalow so we when there for a while.

Oh dear think I may have already said that on another page. Never mind that's me all over. I can forget what I am saying half way through a sentence and repeat myself and not realise I am doing it. But it's all part of HK. At least I know what I was born with.

Allsorts my target is 11st. Still to heavy for my height but I will be happy with it. I have been to heavy for decades and my skin will not tighten no matter how much I exercise so I embrace my flabby bits. Only way to get rid of them is surgical and not doing that. Don't believe in unnecessary operations waste of time and resources.

You just get to a weight you are happy with and take your time . It's a marathon not a sprint. I have had plenty of wobbles along the way eating less for life. But the main thing is don't give up and don't feel guilty. I wasted to many years giving up if I had a bad week and put on plus made myself miserable by feeling a failure. Luckily I was married to a man who didn't care how big I got he loved me and couldn't keep his hands off me.

My son in law as Covid. Haven't been with him since good Friday but was with my daughter and grandson's on Friday . I always do a lateral flow test on Saturday but will be doing them every day including Wednesday to make sure I am clear for my exercise class and Thursday ready for craft group . Thursday at craft group found only one of use didn't have any aliments the rest of us have multiple each . Our age range is 30's to 80's.

As per usual have rambled on. Have a good week everyone. Washing machine has finished so going to peg out. ?

fourormore Sun 24-Apr-22 13:38:31

Allsorts I think the ridiculous 'ideal weights' given to us by the so-called experts are the cause of so many people either giving up or not bothering at all!
Like so many I am supposed to be much lighter than I am and if I believe the lower figure I need to lose a third of the total me!!!
How can a suggested weight for a female of my age, height etc. be 'anything' between 8st 3lb and 11st 2lbs!!! confusedconfusedconfused
At my heaviest I was hitting 14stone which frightened me, but over a long period of time I am now 12st 6lbs. We are all different and I honestly think we ourselves are the best judges - I know I would like to lose a stone or so but I also know I will never ever be 8st 3lb.
Just before Easter due to a bit of a dodgy time I put on a few pounds and today I'm delighted to say I've lost a pound and a half and have lost those 'gained' pounds.
I will persevere and gradually the pounds will go but we all have to learn not to be impatient!!!
Keep up the good work everyone - we will all succeed with the help and support of each other - after all, we're not overweight, we're just under-tall! If I was about 8' tall there wouldn't be a problem!
If only the experts would give us realistic weights to aim for we would persevere more!
Good luck everyone!

Whiff Sun 24-Apr-22 13:47:49

Four well done with the loss. Love the thought we aren't over weight but under tall. That means instead of being 5' 2" if I was 6'+ I would be the right weight. Rack anyone ?

VioletSky Sun 24-Apr-22 13:58:18

Lol!

Incase I am too busy tomorrow, I am 2lbs up, no suprise after a ridiculous loss.

My medication has been adjusted too and already feeling a lot better.

I would also like to be 10 stone but still on track to have lost a stone by June so will be very happy with that. 3 pounds to go!

Dorsetcupcake61 Sun 24-Apr-22 14:56:31

Hi everyone. Well done on losses and staying the same,as long as feel positive and continue with our journey all will be well. Your easter egg hunt sounds lovely Whiff?. I hope your son in law makes a quick recovery. My eldest daughter tested positive, along with eldest grandson. He has been fine, she has felt quite poorly. SIL and youngest son negative!
I have lost half a pound. Still not strictly calorie counting but on whole choosing healthier options! Have a lovely week everyone ?

cornergran Sun 24-Apr-22 16:05:20

Hello everyone. My good wishes to all. No matter if we know there is less or more of ourselves we’re all doing our best and that’s what matters.

We came back yesterday after four days away. I was expecting a weight gain, hotel breakfasts and a three course evening meal. The scales tell me I weigh exactly the same as I did before we left. I’m so pleased, grinning like the proverbial Cheshire Cat. How did that happen? Who knows. I was careful with choices while eating what I fancied. There were no snacks at all, too busy in the day to be bored and go snack hunting. We also did a lot of walking, probably four times our usual.

Back to normal now, it feels a good beginning to the week. Wishing you all a positive week ahead. Keep smiling.

NanKate Mon 25-Apr-22 08:12:04

Well done CornerGran.

Onward and downward folks ??

SachaMac Mon 25-Apr-22 16:17:30

Hi all, I hope everyone has had a good weekend. Well done to all those who have lost or maintained. Whiff, I hope you avoid the dreaded Covid, I seem to be the only one in my family and circle of friends who hasn’t succumbed.
I finally faced the scales yesterday after my holiday and over indulgence of Easter treats and have gained 4lb!? It was no great shock but it shows how much easier it is to gain the lbs than to shift them. Hopefully I can report a good loss next week, Ive just had another delivery of Hello Fresh meals and have opted for the lower calorie Weight-watchers choices again so that should help keep me focussed and gets me cooking & eating proper meals instead of snacking. It’s quite chilly here today, I think the weather is set to change and be more wintry than spring like this week, it’s been so lovely this last two week. Good luck and have a great week everyone.
