On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

We now have a small band of ‘regulars’ called Pears and Apples who have joined our ranks and they have brought new ideas and support. Many thanks girls what would I do without you all. I am so grateful you have stayed so loyal and been such good friends to us all.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.

Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.

Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my way of life.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

Our mantra is - Eat Less for Life.

Hello everybody. First of all Thankyou for your welcome and encouragement and the advice given by NanKate for exercise. Well done everybody who has lost weight. Also great to hear about the crafters and see Whiff’s work. I quilt and cross stitch and knit (mostly socks!).
I am back from holiday and will weigh and measure myself tomorrow. I tried to keep an eye on the calories on holiday and didn’t do too badly most days. I’ve just been reading about Letitia Dean’s new weight loss pill but I think I’ll stick to calorie counting.

Love your dragon Whiff, lovely colours. Happy birthday.
No loss this week. GS has been staying and we are having fun experimenting with Thai recipes!

NanKate Wed 26-Apr-23 08:01:02

Happy Birthday for this coming weekend Whiff do cut yourself a bit of slack on the day. 🥳💐

65 is a mere babe Whiff. I will be 77 in September 😏 I never imagined myself getting this old. When I am laughing with my friends I feel much younger.

Whiff Fri 28-Apr-23 07:08:39

NanKate thank you. My mom never said she was old but getting older. And there's a difference. My 95 year old neighbour calls me non't but a girl but I have found up here no one looks their age. Don't know if it's the sea air or just a northern thing.

My cakes at craft group went quickly yesterday and one of our group who can come when she has a day off came with a large bag full of things she didn't want . The picture is what I had . Our group keeps in touch daily via our what's app group so no one is ever left out. The other picture is what is on my local post box. Whoever it is marks important holidays with a topper for the post box. Must have taken her weeks to plan and make.

Off out on Sunday for a birthday lunch with my daughter and grandson's. Enjoy your long weekend.

SachaMac Fri 28-Apr-23 10:38:15

Have a great weekend everyone, I went to group yesterday and lost a 1lb so slowing down a little but going in the right direction. Let’s hope the weather improves soon and we will all feel more like eating healthy salads and fruit. It’s been cold & miserable here most of the week. Enjoy your birthday lunch Whiff

DamaskRose Fri 28-Apr-23 11:07:16

Please keep posting your lovely photos Whiff they always make me smile. I love the decorated postboxes. I’m doing a little cross stitch to commemorate the Coronation and was having great trouble finding more of one of the threads - you won’t have that problem anytime soon! A pound is a pound SachaMac and it’s encouraged me for one!

TillyTrotter Fri 28-Apr-23 11:53:15

Have a happy weekend all weight watchers.
Whiff enjoy a very Happy Birthday and please don’t worry about the calories just this once.
I love the post box toppers - they are purely for enjoyment and free. There are not many things you can say that about. Very clever stitching people around.

fourormore Sun 30-Apr-23 11:31:35

Lost another half pound this week which is going the right way. I'm still impatient though but it is onwards and downwards and no giving up!
Have a good and successful week everyone and have a good birthday Whiff

Whiff Sun 30-Apr-23 11:54:54

Thank you for your birthday wishes. No birthday lunch as planned my daughter has had an ear infection since Friday and can't drive as she gets vertigo everytime she moves her head so will go next week. Son in law bringing them round this afternoon for a short visit Liverpool are playing. But got my elder grandson for the day Tuesday as teachers on strike. Taking him out to lunch after we have done some baking .

SachaMac and Four well done with the loss. My weight has stayed the same which is ok.

DamaskRose you will have to post a pic of your cross stitch when it's finished. There is a cross stitch thread on arts and craft forum.

My cakes went down well at craft group on Thursday. My way of getting some cake guilt free.

Have a good week every one .

DamaskRose Tue 02-May-23 10:06:49

Good morning everyone. I did my first weigh in this morning and was sooo disappointed to find that, despite counting calories all week, I haven’t lost an ounce. I suppose I was surprised because most people seem to lose at least a few pounds in the first week and then tail off to a pound a week or even half a pound. If anybody has any suggestions, or even if if this has been your experience, I’d love to hear from you. I feel like a good cry to be honest …

NanKate Tue 02-May-23 10:38:08

DamaskRose do not give up, have a few tears if that releases your emotions. Losing weight, as all the Pears would say, is an uphill battle and disappointment hits every time we don’t lose the weight we had hoped for.

You will have support here so it’s back on the wagon and let’s see what next week brings.

Good luck 🤞

TillyTrotter Tue 02-May-23 12:55:24

Don’t despair DamaskRose . This has happened to me but I have found if I persevere the loss begins to happen and then there is more of a relation between calories I have eaten in a week, and what the scales say.
It can be a long haul but you most probably will see a loss next week.
My tip would be: drink lots of water. I don’t know why (others may) but it helps.

SachaMac Tue 02-May-23 14:05:43

Don’t worry DamaskRose, sometimes your body is paying catch up from what you ate the week before. I have found in the past when I know I’m going to be starting a healthier eating plan I over indulge as a final fling before knuckling down and this affects my first weeks loss. I suppose it works the other way too, if you have had a bad week diet wise but then get on the scales to find you have actually lost or maintained. I’m sure you will see results next week. Enjoy your week everyone flowers

DamaskRose Tue 02-May-23 21:21:57

Many thanks for your encouraging and wise words NanKate, TillyTrotter and SachaMac. I think I’m going to try to weigh more of the things I eat regularly, I think I’m overestimating calories but maybe it’s the other way round. Thanks again.

Whiff Thu 04-May-23 06:54:52

DamaskRose I can't estimate how heavy things are so have to weight and measure everything. I allow myself 1,200 a day. Because of my health for years I have had to cook my meals like this. I live alone not by choice but my husband died in 2004. This is how I eat all year round as I found sandwiches or salads in the summer do not satisfy me and I what something to eat a hour after eating them.

I have porridge made with 50g dry weight of oats. Using usually coconut milk or for a change skimmed milk with 20g honey. Coconut milk doesn't taste of 🥥 and you don't need any sweetener. Plus it gives the oats a lovely texture. Cook it in the microwave .

Lunch is always soup made using 150g red lentils,5 veg oxo and whatever veg I have. Because of my hands I can't cut lot of veg up and don't like to buy all frozen veg. Only frozen veg I buy are cauliflower, broccoli, sprouts and peas. I can manage to top and tail carrots and using a flippy peeler peel them and put them whole into the freeze ,same with onions, leeks same but cut in half down the middle to wash. Peppers are halved deseeded ,mushrooms sliced, spring onions topped and tailed left whole after washing. Chard and kale washed, Pak Choi, pulled apart washed and frozen. Butternut and sweet potatoes washed pricked put into foil lined tin with water covered baked for hour. Once cold easy to peel SP put into freezer whole,BN cut into 3 peeled and frozen . So I always have a freezer full of frozen veg . I don't blanch anything doesn't need it that's a throw back to the 70's when freezers became cheap enough for everyone.

So I just weight the veg I want in my soup . I use my largest saucepan add herbs and s&p cook 90 mins and blitz with a hand blender and ladle into a large plastic container . Allow myself 4 ladles a day plus add extra water as it thickens in the fridge lasts 6 days..

Dinner is stew made in same saucepan using either large chicken breast ,300g Quorn chicken pieces or mince. 8 Quorn sausages browned in little oil cut into 8 pieces each. Either 150g of pearl barley put in the start with veg straight from freezer or 150g pasta or Bulger wheat added last 20 mins. Total cooking time 90 mins. Once cooked and cooled I use large kitchen ✂️ but I have to hold handle one in each hand and cut into the stew to dice veg. Portion into 6 oven proof dishes and put into fridge.

I do make a lasagne when I feel like it using Quorn mince make as stew . Using large enamel baking dish only use 4 sheets of pasta and only put cheese sauce on top made from 50g mature cheddar ,30g p flour and skimmed milk . As I do the all in one method using a whisk no need for any spread so saves cals. There is always to much filling so put extra into 5 oven proof dishes. Lasagne lasts 6 dinners and make sure first portion take extra filling . Once cold portion rest into dishes and in the fridge . This way I always have a lunches and dinners in the fridge. My ability to do things varies each day. But this works for me and how I lost 7 st. Plus going to sit fit class. Still trying to loose the last stone and bit for the last 2 years but I will do it one day.

If I have a bad day and over eat because I have been eating this way since 2017 I still weight and measure and count the cals so I know how many cals over I am . But I start each day anew. Feeling guilty I found is why I always gave up every diet in the past but I haven't given up since I decided to finally stop being morbidly obese and yes I was over 19st and size 32. Now 12st few pounds and size 16. Want to get to 11st but no time limit as that does not work for me.

Everyone here has their own way to lose weight. You need to find a way to suit you and don't beat yourself up if you have a bad day . No feeling guilty and be kind to yourself. Don't forget to measure yourself at the start and every month or so. I found once I started exercising after a few months my weight went up but had lost inches.

Find a way that works for you and it will become second nature. Yes I still have treats but I count the cals . Cakes and biscuits I make for craft made cheats ways as my hands and stamina don't let me able to do some things. But I don't have lunch on craft days but have extra 10g of dry oats for breakfast. Only bake ever 2 weeks for group . But do have a few biscuits others bring in with cuppa during our 2 hours together.

I know it's a ramble but there is no short way to explain how I have to do things. 🤦.

Main thing is not to give up. You will win in the end .

mumofmadboys Thu 04-May-23 07:33:18

I have put a step counter on my phone and aim to walk six miles a day. My weight has started to decrease. I usually do 2 three mile walks. I dont count steps in house or garden.

Shirleyw Fri 05-May-23 06:28:30

I’ve got the active ten on my phone, tells you how long you’ve walked also how many brisk minutes you’ve walked….sometimes when I think I’ve done a brisk walk it dosent show then another time I’m pleasantly surprised how long I’ve walked briskly 😄

DamaskRose Fri 05-May-23 16:48:43

Thankyou so much Whiff for taking the trouble to give me so much good advice. I will certainly try some of your foody ideas. Counting calories is the best way for me too, it will keep me on the straight and narrow if I can look at the app and see exactly where I am. I try not to look in the pantry where DH’s snacks are! I really do feel encouraged by all of you on here, thankyou very much, I hope I’ll have better news after my next weigh in. 🤞🏻

SachaMac Fri 05-May-23 17:06:18

I weighed in yesterday before heading off for a night in Buxton to see a show at the opera house. I had maintained so I got away with my little over indulgences, I’ll have a cream scone tomorrow while watching the coronation then back on it, really want to get my stone award!! Enjoy the bank holiday weekend everyone.

Whiff Sun 07-May-23 09:55:58

Well stayed the same this week which I am glad. Eaten out twice this week and had chips and fried food and a pud each time. But really enjoyed both meals.

Really enjoyed watching the coronation yesterday loved the mix of traditional with modern twist. Though how lovely everyone looked and William kissing his dad's cheek was a special moment. Hopefully when Charles and Camilla when our of view for a while they had chance to go to the loo. Bet a lot of people had pads on as some had been sitting or standing for hours. Liked the fact Princess Anne rode in the rain with all the forces. She's like me a chatterbox as she was always seen talking.

Whether or not you like the royal family you can't deny it was a wonderful event and admire all the hard work that went into its smooth running. Looking forward to the concert tonight.

Have a good week everyone.

fourormore Sun 07-May-23 17:21:21

Frustratingly after a really strict week I lost 0.2 of a pound!
Still a loss is a loss and it is another notch downwards on my chart.
Keep up the good work everyone - slowly but surely wins the battle, we just need to be patient !!!

Shirleyw Mon 08-May-23 01:28:41

Morning all…up 1 and a half, dosent surprise me, didn’t help doing an afternoon tea, which we thoroughly enjoyed,I also tucked in more than I should with home made raspberry ice cream, oh that was so delish, but the calories 😅. Still, after a joyous weekend, enjoyed the coronation, back on track now.
Hope you all have a good week.

NanKate Mon 08-May-23 07:01:04

HAPPY FIVE YEAR CELEBRATION TO ALL THE PEARS AND APPLES 🥳👍

I can hardly believe we have been on this journey together for 5 years. The time has flown.

Thank you ALL for all your input, the highs, the lows, the tips, just everything. I just couldn’t have done it without you.

Thank you sincerely 👋

Whiff Mon 08-May-23 07:21:48

NanKate many congratulations for starting this wonderful thread. 5 years is a testament to how much it means to us on it. 🥂🍾.

Four it's a loss of it and a win .Shirley it's a blip. Home made ice cream yum .

It was a lovely coronation weekend mixture of tradition and modern. All taking part in it should be very proud of how it went.

Well here's to the next 5 years NanKate and all you fruits. ❤️

SachaMac Mon 08-May-23 09:39:41

Congratulations on 5 years 🍐 that’s a great achievement.
I’m sure we have all struggled this week, cream teas & cup cakes seem to have featured prominently in the Coronation celebrations cupcake Still it’s an historic event and nice to join in with the celebrations even if they do involve scoffing naughty treats 😆 Back to normal for me today, just put a chilli con carne in the slow cooker and will have that with cauliflower rice. I’ve had far too many carbs over the weekend, mainly in the form of a scones!!! Here’s to the next five years and more successes for us all along the way smile
