On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

We now have a small band of ‘regulars’ called Pears and Apples who have joined our ranks and they have brought new ideas and support. Many thanks girls what would I do without you all. I am so grateful you have stayed so loyal and been such good friends to us all.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.

Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.

Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my way of life.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

Our mantra is - Eat Less for Life.

Thanks Whiff 💐 as ever really useful information. A switch went on in my head after seeing the doctor and knowing I would get support from you to kick start my Eating Less for Life regime. I’m now writing down and weighing everything I eat. The first few days I felt hungry but know I have settled into my routine and feel more positive that I can do this.

Onward and downward.

OK folks.

I had my gall bladder out a year ago - since then I’ve piled on the lbs, even though my diet hasn’t changed (although my exercise has - lost my dear dog). I have grown out of my clothes - never ever happened before!

That will have made a difference (exercise) but it isn’t the whole story.

So ladies - can you give me your tips which have been most successful please.

Much appreciated in advance.

Hello Whitewave if you want support and info you are in the right place.

I’m in a rush so will give you the name of a book (others available) which is my bible of calorie counting. Bought in on Amazon or you could order from your local Book Shop.

Carb and Calories Counter by Chris Cheyette and Yello Balolia. It cost me £15.99. It gives calorie counts for most foods in a visual form of photos. It is meant for anyone to lose weight and those with diabetes.

NanKate I remember a while back someone said if you feel hungry have a drink of water or tea . Thirst can be confused with hunger . So when you feel hunger have a drink first and wait half and hour and see if you still feel hungry. It's what has helped me at times.

Whitewave the book NanKate suggests sounds good . When I first started on my journey I used an old Rosemary Conley cal and fat counter . But over time I have learnt off by heart some cals per gram. But different brands have different cals per gram for the same product so you will get used to which ones have the lowest cal and fat levels .
If there is sit fit class never you then that's a good choice to exercise safely. If you would like I will write down my 7 exercises I do every morning they would be a gentle start for you .

Thanks Whiff yesterday I had a hungry moment sometime before my evening meal. I immediately had a drink and the feeling went away.

I will weigh myself on Friday and report back, even if it is just a small loss.

Whiff Wed 16-Oct-24 22:05:21

NanKate glad it worked .

These are what my sit fit instructor calls wake up your body exercises she gave them to use in January. Because my life runs on routine still do them every morning. Once washed and dressed I do them.

Stand with feet apart and take a deep breath in and raise your arms above your head or as high as you can get them and breath out lowering them 10 times.

Jiggle your arms and legs to count of 20.

Hips facing forward arms by your side and swing your arms as far as you can twisting from your waist from side to side 20 times.

Put your left hand on your right shoulder and right hand on left shoulder and raise your arms to shoulder height or as high as you can get them and twist from the waist hips forward 10 times them reverse arms and 10 times.

I hold on to my bed bar but use a chair alternating your legs try and kick your bum to count of 20.

Holding on alternating your legs lift your knees as high as you can count of 20 .

Still holding on flex your toes as if you are using a foot pump count of 20 .

Sit on the middle of a dining chair knees together and clench your bottom you should raise up a bit good for your pelvic floor 10 times.

I have some static pedals and do 300 rotations everyday except the day I go to the Brain Charity as it's a long journey and walking further than I do normally when out shopping.

I even did them on my holiday because that's how my life works . But didn't take my static pedals 🤣.

They are supposed to get your blood pumping and relieve any stiffness in your body. But if anything hurts stop. Our instructor drums that into us. You should feel the exercises but not pain. Which is funny with me as I am in pain everyday with my limbs. But doing the exercises and going to my sit fit class every week helps keep my limbs mobile and it's fun.

Whiff Fri 18-Oct-24 17:54:21

NanKate brilliant. I took my own advice on having a drink then I wasn't hungry last night .

NanKate Fri 18-Oct-24 22:09:37

I did too again tonight and it does work. 👍

Whiff Sun 20-Oct-24 10:36:34

Been having problems with water retention but been sticking to my cal allowance. And lost 3.25lbs this week . Been drinking more tea as it supposed to be a diuretic. On the waiting list for cardiology. But at least having my bone scan on the 30th and neurologist on the 1st. So that's good news.

Be very careful anyone venturing out the next couple of days gusting winds ,heavy rain and floods forecast.

Have a good week pears . 🧘

Shirleyw Sun 20-Oct-24 20:56:30

Half a pound lost this week. Tuesday I came down with a chesty cough and also, like you whiff , dh and me had our covid and flu jab…..covid jab was itchy , a bit swollen and red this time but ok now…best to have them. I’m a volunteer at the hospital and covid is quite rife again there, …good job for side rooms who have it….ive noticed quite a lot of medical staff are wearing masks again….
Still…..getting plenty of rain as per 🙄…have a good week all…

Shirleyw Sun 20-Oct-24 20:57:57

….well done whiff, 3 and a quarter pounds lost, that’s great…

NanKate Sun 20-Oct-24 21:47:55

Good to see you here ShirleyW. I think it is just the 3 of us until maybe the New Year when our numbers usually grow.

I’m on the second week of my calorie counting and it is getting a bit easier.

NanKate Sun 20-Oct-24 21:49:20

Only 9 more posts until we start anew. Who would have believed it. 😳

Could we include this when the new thread starts? I want to start doing it and might not find it. Or, if you don’t mind Whiff I’ll copy it and pm you with it so I can access it.

Shirleyw Mon 21-Oct-24 03:18:48

Oh gosh yes nankate not many more now to part 5.
6 years this thread has been going…WOW.
Be good to have some new people on here, keeps the ball rolling as they say.

Your doing well with your calorie counting, i calorie count too and also I do Pilates Mondays and other days aerobics, weights and atm trying to be consistent walking 7000 steps. Not always easy.

Whiff Mon 21-Oct-24 06:15:03

MayBee of course you can . But if anything hurts stop. And do them at your own pace . Some of the exercises we do during class have to be done slowly as it makes your body work harder at controlling it.

We do sit to stand . And it works got me off a hospital loo. I had forgotten how low a.normal toilet is and had left my stick by the door and couldn't reach it. Thought I would have to phone the hospital and ask them to come and help me . 😂.
But have used to get off low chairs and sofas.
I just rocked back and pushed down on my heels and got up.

This what we do in class. Sit as near to the front of a chair ,feet in line with your hips and feet little back , arms crossed over your chest touching your shoulders or as high as you can get your arms. Lean forward and push your weight into your heels and stand up . But go at your own pace . Most times I can shoot up other times slower. Step back until the backs of your legs hit the chair. Bend and push your bottom back and lower yourself slowly to sit down. Then bum shuffle to the front of the chair and repeat for 12 times.

Shirley wow super fit . Only time I get lot of steps in is when I go to the Brain Charity last week's count was 8,371 then fell asleep on the sofa watching TV after dinner 🤣. The way my water retention is going my weight may be up next week. But I keep counting the cals and hope for the best.

NanKate looking to forward to new thread . At least here we are eating less for life the hard way not using injections. The other thread makes my blood boil. When will people learn you control what you buy and put in your mouth . Injections don't teach you healthy eating . How much does it cost the NHS . If I said what I want to on the other thread I would get suspended again and don't want that . We have our ups and downs but we don't give up . As we all know there are no short cuts to lose weight and keep it off. But we support eachother and that's priceless . 😊🤗

NanKate Mon 21-Oct-24 08:11:44

Yes Maybe I will ask Whiff to paste it in when we get onto our next thread, good idea. 👍

Whiff Mon 21-Oct-24 09:33:21

NanKate have sent the exercises to MayBee as I don't know how to paste things. I had the great pleasure of meeting her in person in May when I went to Berwick upon Tweed. And had a wonderful time with her . It's lovely to meet people in person as she's as lovely as her posts .

NanKate Mon 21-Oct-24 12:06:11

Thanks Whiff 👍

Yes I too have met some lovely Gransnetters. I found that one of them only lives a few miles from me and we meet up regularly. You would think we had known each other for years.

Whiff Tue 22-Oct-24 08:52:09

NanKate just ordered the book you recommend .

NanKate Tue 22-Oct-24 09:31:11

It works for me Whiff as it is all pictures and I am a visual learner. Let me know what you think of it.

NanKate Tue 22-Oct-24 12:29:00

Come with me Pears and Apples just about to start Part 5 of our weight loss journey. 👋

CocoPops Tue 22-Oct-24 17:02:31
