On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

We now have a small band of ‘regulars’ called Pears and Apples who have joined our ranks and they have brought new ideas and support. Many thanks girls what would I do without you all. I am so grateful you have stayed so loyal and been such good friends to us all.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.

Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.

Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my way of life.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

Our mantra is - Eat Less for Life.

Gosh whiff, all that blood after a jab, I’m also surprised about blood thinners doing that. How’s the bruise now?

Put on 1 and a half, 😕

Had a thunderstorm yesterday along with hail stones then rained for a bit, not enough to fill water butts but least the garden benefited.

Have a good week all.

Whiff Tue 13-Jun-23 05:53:31

TillyTrotter and Shirley bruise is still a dark purple but I would rather take the blood thinners as it lessens my change of getting a stroke because of my PAF. I have enough mobility problems without having a stroke . I have to be very careful with sharp scissors as I bled a lot but always have skin closers in and plenty of plasters. It's not due to the blood thinners but my HPX when I burn myself I don't feel it at first it's only usually if it's a bad one then I open the freezer and put the effected part on the freezer drawer front. Otherwise put my hand in cold water.

Shirley it's a blip but like the rest of us you keep going and never give up.

Off to Chester for the day to met my best friend. It's half way between where we live. Plus it doesn't cost me anything. Merseyside all men and women aged 60 get a bus/ rail pass. I can go as far as Chester on the train for free.

Need to get up now as going out earlier than I was and will pay my bus fare to the station but it's a flat fee of £2. If I wait until 9.30 for my pass I will have to rush which makes my balance worse to get the train . Rather be early than late.

Have a good week pears .

Hope your bruise is fading Whiff.

Hope you had a lovely meet up with your friend yesterday. I saw my oldest friends on Monday, we met when I was 16! We laughed throughout our time together.

fourormore Sun 18-Jun-23 11:30:53

I have lost another half pound which is great but as always not enough!!! It is progress though.
I hope all my fellow pears are surviving the heat - we should have melted away several pounds by now!
Good luck everyone as we plod on - and try to stay safe Whiff

SachaMac Sun 18-Jun-23 18:08:10

Hi all, I weighed in and it was no surprise to find I had gained 1lb. I’ll take that as it could have been much worse. I’m still 13lb down but really need to start chipping away at the next stone. Somehow I feel heavier in the heat even though I’m not particularly hungry, I assume it’s fluid retention.
I hope you enjoyed Chester Whiff I went up to the Christmas market there last year, it’s as lovely place.
I’m sitting here listening to the thunder, at least I won’t have to water tonight.
Here’s heading into another week full of determination.

TillyTrotter Sun 18-Jun-23 20:50:29

I will join you if I may and head into the new week full of determination.
2.5 pounds on for me but I know exactly what and where.
Choc ices, cider shandies at the end of hot days and salads, but I added mayo or thousand island dressing to the fish or meat on the plate.
I have renewed vigour to resist(!) this coming week and try and eat everything plain and “naked” (the food, not me!)
Good Luck all the Pears. 🍀

I’ve just ordered a new bar stool for the kitchen. I’ve decided to make a point of eating in the kitchen and also having my tea and coffee there, too. I’ve got into the habit of just eating in front of the tv in the living room. I’m hoping it will change my mindset about food.

SachaMac Mon 19-Jun-23 09:53:35

That sounds a great plan MayBee70 I often eat whilst sitting on the sofa, better to disassociate relaxing on the sofa with eating any kind of food then we can hopefully break the snacking habit, that’s definitely my downfall.

Whiff Mon 19-Jun-23 15:40:50

I had a great time in Chester had some naughty treats but did walk a lot be it wobbly. It was very hot.

Weight stayed the same this week so happy with that. Been to my exercise class and asked our instructor not to do that yoga we did last week I managed to do it ok. But unfortunately it set off my HPX and my balance was off all week so had to be extra careful when out . As much as I enjoyed the yoga it's not worth the after effects.

Four well done with the loss every bit counts.

SachaMac and TillyTrotter it's a blip and like everyone else you don't give up. Not giving up no matter what ,is a win in my book.

MayBee I always eat my meals with my legs up on the settee using a tray lined with a tea towel so the pasta dish I eat my dinner out off doesn't slip as I have tipped the dish and scalded my legs . It's safer for me when I am eating alone because my hands tremble all the time especially my right it's safer as I drop food down me. It's fun going out with my daughter and grandsons as she has to cut food for me as I can't use a dinner knife. When I am out alone with my older grandson he tells me I that I am doing well and not dropped any down yet. Eat at my table if I have guests.

We all have different ways to reach the same goal. Have a great week everyone.

Whiff Mon 19-Jun-23 16:50:37

Picked my chard this morning before it rained .

TillyTrotter Wed 21-Jun-23 10:51:30

Glad you had a great time in Chester Whiff.
It is many years since I have been there.
Lovely to have freshly picked Chard. Well done!
Have a good day everyone.

MayBee70 Wed 21-Jun-23 12:55:03

My bar stool has arrived and I’m really pleased with it. Can’t use it at the moment, though as I’m painting the kitchen window and all the work surfaces are covered in clutter. I like my tea really strong and have started to keep my tea bag in the mug because I’m too lazy to go back into the kitchen to get it. However, I’ve twice now left the mug lying around and my scavenger of a whippet has ate the tea bag. The first time it was decaf so not too dangerous, but the second time it was normal tea and dangerous. Plus the risk of blockage from the bag itself. The first time was an accident: the second time I was furious with myself because I should have learned my lesson. That’s why I need to rethink the way I do things. Since retiring I’ve lived in a very odd way and the pandemic exacerbated it. Becoming even more nocturnal, living in pyjamas and eating at strange times. Going back to diet, I had a salad last night for the first time in ages and I did enjoy it! I throw just about everything into it. I’d like to grow lettuce again: maybe next year. I must buy some cloches to grow it under, though.

Whiff Thu 22-Jun-23 06:03:17

MayBee I have a large rectangle planter with legs and a lid. I grown strawberries in it and with the lid on leave them there all year round. It would be ideal for lettuce as it wouldn't attract slugs. With my chard ,kale and rocket I pick leaves and leave the roots that way get second and third harvest . Be ideal for lettuce.

TillyTrotter with all the rain will be picking my first lot of french beans the weekend. Kale is ready to be cut again and my rocket is ready. Never grown broad beans before but think they will be a couple ready to pick the weekend. The chard made 10 bags of approx 130g in each they are in the freezer.

SachaMac Thu 22-Jun-23 12:37:56

Sounds like there’s some people with green fingers on here 🪴 Ive got a couple of cucumber & tomato plants that are doing ok.
Good news this morning, I have been to SW group and lost 1•5 lb so I am now back on track. Interesting talk today on excuses/reasons for not eating healthily and strategies to deal with them. One of them being when other people seem to deliberately try & sabotage your diet. Be strong folks, it’s well worth the effort….have a good week 🥬 🍅

Kim19 Thu 22-Jun-23 18:12:12

I find being on holiday makes my regular eating regime decidedly difficult. This is particularly so when I'm in the company of family or friends. Decidedly congenial but often develops into celebratory nature. I'm just back having gained half a stone. Oh yes, they're worth it but it is a pain. I'll soon get it off though. The things I do for love.......!

Whiff Fri 23-Jun-23 05:39:06

SachaMac well done with the loss. The only person sabotaging their dieting was me. My husband always supported me and when I gave up he never thought of me as a failure. He still fancied me no matter how big I got. He's weight until he died always stayed between 11-11.5 sts all over 29 years together.

But since 2017 when my journey started lost the 7st but for the past 2 years been trying to lose the last stone and bit. But I won't give up. One day in the future I will get there 😊.

Kim today is a new day. As I have often said it's a marathon not a sprint. So even if you have a bad day the important thing is don't give up. Each day is a new start. 🌹

fourormore Sun 25-Jun-23 10:31:57

Having lost half a pound last week and half a pound the week before, I have now put that pound back on! I am back to where I was three weeks ago. However, I'm ok about it as I did sin a little this week and also, because of the extreme heat I have been drinking an awful lot more water.
This week looks calmer so maybe properly disciplined but we must all remember - we must keep hydrated!
Good luck everyone as we plod along together!

SachaMac Sun 25-Jun-23 10:58:55

I do think our bodies holds on to every drop of water in the heat fourormore as you say it’s important to stay hydrated. I was at a carnival helping out in the heat all day yesterday, I was constantly drinking water or cups of tea but never needed the loo once, there’s an upside to everything smile

TillyTrotter Sun 25-Jun-23 11:56:32

Breezing in 🙂 (thank goodness there is a breeze today as it is so hot),
but wants to share my happy ‘loss’ this week of 2 lbs.
I really did try hard as we all do. I agree being hydrated is so important and it helps curb hunger too.
I have drunk iced lemon tea/peach tea and water this week, and missed bread from my plate if giving DH some.
Crackers instead.
Sending my best wishes to all today - keep on striving for a loss each week, no matter how small. And if you haven’t lost well there is always next week. We never give up do we?

TillyTrotter Sun 25-Jun-23 11:58:13

Whiff I love French beans - we call them Bobby beans in our house for some reason.

MayBee70 Sun 25-Jun-23 17:50:51

I’m having a couple of new windows installed soon so I’m having to work in the house even though it’s like working in a sauna. But the result is that I’ve weighed and measured myself and I’ve lost pounds and inches. If only I had time to go to the gym I could tone myself up. I realise how hot and humid it is because when I wear Marigolds they’re soaking inside. I’m also not doing the 16:8 diet but have tried to stick to just water for as long as possible at nighttime/early morning.

Whiff Sun 25-Jun-23 19:14:04

Stayed the same again but ok with it. This heat is playing havoc with my HPX. My balance is very bad at the moment . But I don't give up going out. But then again I can fall in my bungalow. 🤣.

Four I weigh myself everyday but only take Sunday's weight . Wednesday had lost a pound but today the same as last week. Been sticking to my allowance but drinking more. Losing weight is hard but it's worth all the ups and downs..

TillyTrotter well done . Bet you had a big smile on your face when you saw the scales .

MayBee glad you have lost pounds and inches. You don't need to go to a gym to tone up. My sit fit class is in a church cafe but because of the heat been doing it in the church as it's cooler. My daughter's boxercise and yoga classes are also in church halls. Gyms are ok if you can use the equipment but I couldn't. Some sit fit classes are run of an evening. If you Google sit fit classes over 50's should be some in your area . Sit fit is not an easy way to exercise but it does work every muscle in your body. We do some exercises holding on to the back of the chair. You would be surprised how hard our instructor works us but I love it and feel better for going. In a bad pain flare in my arm and leg but still going to class tomorrow as I am always in pain and have been as long as I can remember. Last week my right knee hurt but after class it didn't.

Have a good week everyone.

MayBee70 Sun 25-Jun-23 22:19:41

All of my weight is in my hips and thighs. My gym has some weighted equipment that targets the very areas I need. However, I stopped going because I was scared of catching covid. Rejoined but still haven’t gone back ( too busy with the house and still scared of catching covid!).. The machines also strengthen my knees. I used to go to a really good gym that specialised in equipment for older people or people with mobility problems but it closed down. I do need to start doing exercises again. The ones I do for my knees don’t seem to be doing much but they make such a difference. Apart from my bad knee feeling a bit sore at the moment ( it started yesterday) my joints are so much better when it’s hot.

Shirleyw Mon 26-Jun-23 06:22:06

Well done for the 2lb loss tilly.
Lost half a pound this week.

Don’t think today is going to be quite as hot so we have a breather.

SachaMac Mon 26-Jun-23 08:18:54

Well done everyone, I think I’ll struggle to lose this week after a tricky weekend food & drink wise. I’m still hoping for a small loss or maintain for Thursday. Have a good week all and enjoy the sunshine while it lasts.
