On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

We now have a small band of ‘regulars’ called Pears and Apples who have joined our ranks and they have brought new ideas and support. Many thanks girls what would I do without you all. I am so grateful you have stayed so loyal and been such good friends to us all.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.

Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.

Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my way of life.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

Our mantra is - Eat Less for Life.

A loss of 0.4lb that I really cannot explain!
I honestly feel guilty as I haven't really 'been good' all week and then on Friday evening we went to a dinner where the dessert was serious chocolate - scrummy brownie, drenched in chocolate sauce served with salted caramel ice cream. blush
I truly expected to have put on so how on earth have I lost nearly half a pound!
There is no rhyme or reason with this weight loss game is there fellow pears? I really sympathise with my fellow strugglers as I know I cannot get complacent.
Good luck everyone as we all struggle on together and we won't give up!

Will have to do this page at a time.

Shirley well done with the lose.

Kissngate I hated anything to do with slimming clubs. That's why I count calories. Yes its a bother to start with finding out how many calories in things and weighting and measuring and writing it down but I found after 2 weeks it just became just a part of my life. Been doing it since 2017. And won't give up it's become second nature.

You will be surprised if you give it a go how many foods are lower in cals that you thought . Yesterday I made a stew using 300g of Quorn mince lots of veg and 60g pasta and 5 oxo's worked out at 989 cals the lot divided it by 6 so each portion is 165cals. If by dinner time my cal count is down I add extra veg and either precooked rice I have cooked and packed in 100g portions and froze 138 cal per portion or bulgar wheat from raw ,pasta or red lentils. I always add extra water before reheating. Got a soup cooking at the moment total cals 737. Will last 6 lunches.

SachaMac look at it this way at least you can maintain a weight not the one you one but you can do it.

Whiff Sun 16-Jul-23 11:54:36

Four it's a loss. Every bit counts. Please don't feel guilty feel proud no matter what the scales say you haven't given up trying . That's the main thing not giving up.

Well knew I would put on this week but thought it would be more than the 2.75 lbs I have . Been having biscuits with every cuppa blame that on my sister in law's dad. 😁. My brother does all the cooking . While the weather didn't permit a BBQ did get my very wicked high cal cheesecake he promised me. Using blackcurrants he had picked from his allotment. Took us back to our childhood topping and tailing the berries. Cheesecake was 4" thick oaty biscuits as the base layer of blackcurrant not very sweeten with sugar. But the cheesecake was made with full fat cream cheese and double cream . Topped with rest of stewed blackcurrants had 3 large slices over a couple of days 😋😋😋. They took me to the drive through ice cream shop we always have double scoops I had apple crumble and chocolate. They are having a new kitchen fitted end of the month so went tile shopping with them. Had a lovely time with them . Met some more of their village friends.

But back to my usual eating routine. Have a good week pears 🍐. Back to my sit fit class tomorrow. Will put in extra effort.

Hello All from a sunny New Forest.

I bought a really nice floral jacket from a charity shop here, but it is about half a size too small on the hips. I bought it anyway. Here is a photo.

I said to the wafer thin assistant ‘I’m buying the jacket to encourage myself to lose a few pounds so that it fits well’ she replied ‘Customers always say that and then do nothing about it’. 😡 That so annoyed me and I am now double determined to lose the weight that I have put on since Christmas.

I should have told her I have the support of Pears and Apples and she would have thought me totally mad.

Shirleyw Thu 20-Jul-23 04:38:05

That is a nice jacket nankate, the assistant would have niggled me too, that would have been funny if you said you have the support of apples and pears, she would have been stumped for words 😂. I love the new forest, hope you’re having a fabulous time.

That cheesecake sounds lovely whiffcouple of pounds on not too bad at all, you’ll soon whip that off. Glad you enjoyed time with your brother and family.

Stayed the same this week.

NanKate Thu 20-Jul-23 20:16:46

Thanks ShirleyW I like brightly coloured clothes which is not to everyone’s taste, but I’ve got to an age I don’t care what others think.

TillyTrotter Sun 23-Jul-23 06:33:47

Sorry to have been missing so long but I hope you are all doing well?
NanKate that is a pretty jacket. The assistant was a sour puss and I am glad you weren’t put off by her.
Have a lovely holiday.
I am glad you have got away for a break too Whiff.
I have been away and been ill so without any effort on my part I have lost a few pounds but my main aim is to get healthy again now.
Despite a lack of sunshine this month the fresh crop of cherries are sweet and delicious but why are they so expensive 🍒?

fourormore Sun 23-Jul-23 12:00:03

Welcome back Tilly and I hope you are feeling much better. We've been missing a few names recently so I hope they are all just having a break or, like you, have a reason for their non-appearance and haven't given up.
As expected - after my couple of tiny losses I have put a pound on this week - I cannot seem to break out of that 2-3 pound 'window' but I will plod on. The important thing is not to allow it to become obsessive.
I am currently experiencing knee pain due to age and 'wear and tear' so my walking is limited some days but I am determined to continue to stay mobile.
Keep up the good work everyone!

Whiff Sun 23-Jul-23 15:25:53

NanKate your top is beautiful. I used to take remarks like that shop assistant. But haven't since being widowed. I would have said I can lose the weight but will you lose your rude attitude. And yes I have said that . I walked into a shop and the assistant said we don't have anything in your size madam. I was there to buy a present for my daughter. Spent my money in another shop.

I have put up with rude remarks and bullying at school. Due to my size and the fact I fell down a lot. The falling I now know is due to having HPX. Food was my comfort from the bullying.

It's a sad fact that people jump on anyone who says anything sexist or racist . But anything ageist ,sizeist ,or about a disability is seen as acceptable. When it's not. I started to watch the Rosie Jones programme and got to upset about the cyber bullying she had been sent to her. She was born disabled and yet these morons thought it was ok to call her vile names . Words that are not acceptable today. Words that I was called growing up I was also born with a disability. Luckily apart from falling and being in constant with my legs my disability didn't get worse until I was 1988 when I was 29. The limb jerks started luckily for 3 years thanks to my neurologist having a tablet to stop the jerks .I look normal until I move then it's clear I am disabled. Finding out what I was born with last year had changed my life I know understand why my body has done what it has all my life and why I am in constant pain.

Until I had my diagnosis last year I never said I was disabled as I have met people with far worse things wrong with them. But since 1988 doctors told me I was.

Rambling again.

Tilly good you are back .sorry you have been ill. Hope you feel 100% soon. Cherries are always expensive but delicious.

Have any of you read the Slim fast thread. And seen the pictures of what some call dinner.

I have posted a couple of times. But as always people want a quick fix but as all of us here know only to well there is no such thing. But none of us have stopped trying eating less for life. And making healthy choices but still having a treat.

Four is there a sit fit class near to you. It's not a soft option as as you are put through your paces. But as my instructor says you should feel you are working but if in pain stop. We work every bit of our body from head to our toes. No matter how much pain I am in I go as I feel better afterwards. It's lovely as we all encourage eachother and all have the same aim to keep our bodies as flexible as we can for as long as we can. It's funny I can do some of the exercises easier than I can walk.

Don't know how I did it but lost 1lb this week which was a lovely surprise. Just need to keep it up.

Well keep going pears we will win in the end.

My daughter saw the above on holiday today in Weymouth. Hope it makes you smile.

NanKate Mon 24-Jul-23 17:35:50

Whiff I like your attitude on life. You are like my sister who keeps going although she is in such pain. I admire you both.

Love the photo.

Welcome back Tilly you know you will get a friendly wave from us pears 👋

Finally I read that drinking a glass of water before each meal helps with weight reduction for middle to older age people. So I am now glugging down water with a piece of frozen lemon in it.

Whiff Tue 25-Jul-23 12:46:32

NanKate thank for those kind words. My mom when she got married was told by the married women where she worked to drink a glass of water before sex then she wouldn't get pregnant 🤣 This was in 1950.

Water before a meal is to lessen the space in your stomach but it does mean more trips to the loo. I was told by my GP 8-10 drinks a day is enough. Only found this out when I had an UTI and upped my drinks to 12-14 a day and ended up diluting my sodium and folic acid levels to much after I had a blood test. Had to have a 3 month course of folic acid tablets.

With our bodies we can't win 🤦.

Well, I’ve actually lost quite a lot of weight and inches. It started with me having to do lots of work on my house when it was really hot and it was like working in a sauna. Then, without boring you with the details, I had to spend two weeks deep cleaning my partners house. Had my arthritis been bad I wouldn’t have been able to do that but I think the warm weather meant my joints were better than they have been for ages. It was only when I got home that I realised how much weight I’d lost. I’ve also been trying not to eat in the evening. I wish I had the courage to go to the gym because it’s left me very flabby, but I’m still scared of catching covid. I was able to use my sauna blanket for a couple of weeks, too. How long will it be before the weight starts to creep up again I wonder.

NanKate Sat 29-Jul-23 17:24:28

Well done Maybe70 a good result.

I too have stopped myself eating in the evening after my supper. I think it is working very slowly. My top is not clinging to my stomach anymore. 😀

MayBee70 Sat 29-Jul-23 17:38:13

I lost weight at the start of the pandemic, mainly because I didn’t eat between meals as I was worried about food supplies. And I always eat less in summer. It’s winter and cold weather and dark nights that makes me pile in the pounds. I just get so fed up with the fact that I’m nearly 72 and have been on a never ending diet since I was @ 16.

MayBee70 Sat 29-Jul-23 17:56:24

Gosh. It’s interesting reading up on what I’ve written on here since the start of the year. It seems my weight loss has been concentrated in quite a short space of time. And is down to doing housework. All the years I spent doing different diets etc and I should have just devoted myself to being a domestic goddess. And my obsession with watching Clean it, fix it and then cleaning everything that doesn’t move has lost me pounds and inches.

Whiff Sun 30-Jul-23 11:22:01

MayBee well done with the lose of weight and inches. Must put more welly into doing my housework. Is there a sit fit class in your area? Some councils run active aging programmes with GP referral. The sit fit class I go to is in my local church of a Monday afternoon my instructor runs a class at the library on the morning. If you Google sit fit class for over 60's hopefully there will be a class in your area. Mine costs £5 for hour. It's not an easy option as our instructor works very muscle in your body but it's fun. No matter how much I am in pain or how much my mobility is off I still go as it does me good. Mind you walking back to my chair after we did heel to toe walking up and down the aisle my balance went wonky last week as it does I thought I was heading in a straight line and wall into the wall. Gave others a fright but told them it's normal which it is anyway didn't hurt as much as the metal barrier I hit the week before.

Few weeks ago I found I had the 9pm munchies and gave in but have knocked it on the head. I have my dinner between 6- 6.30 then have a low cal instant hot chocolate made with coconut milk at 8 then nothing after that.

Stayed the same this week but a pair of pj trousers that were to tight when I brought them 6 months now fit loosely so I can wear them. Must be all the waist twists we do in class has toned my flabby waist up.

NanKate it's a lovely feeling when nothing clings to your stomach or in my case wobbly bits. To me it proves even if like in my case not lost any weight this week we lose inches.

Got my grandson for the next 4 Tuesdays as his mom will be at work his brother will be at nursery. So trips to the park will be on the cards weather permitting and he's a dab hand a weeding and he can reach places I can't easily. So be more active for a few weeks.

Have a good week all.

MayBee70 Sun 30-Jul-23 11:30:11

The thing is though, if I eat anything like the amount that most people eat I’ll put it all back on again!

Whiff Sun 30-Jul-23 11:48:05

MayBee I try and stick to 1,200 cals a day which wouldn't be enough for most people but if I go over it I stay the same or put on. Because we are all different some people would say my cal count is to low but it works for me and I don't feel hungry during the day. But always ready for my porridge of a morning. I find it's the best breakfast for me all year round as it's a slow release carbohydrate. When I was at my brother and sister in law's few weeks ago had Weetabix mini fruit and nut weets. And needed a biscuit or 2 mid morning . I don't when I am home. But then again don't buy them . And any I make I give to my daughter my grandson loves to bake or take them to my craft group that way I only have one not the dozen or so the mixture makes .

MayBee70 Sun 30-Jul-23 12:04:25

When I stick to the 16:8 diet I always make sure I’ve got something yummy to eat as soon as it’s time. Because that will be late morning it can be tea bread or banana bread. For most of my life I’ve not been able to stick to one slice of cake or three biscuits but I seem to be able to do that now. Reading back on this thread, last time I was housesitting at my daughters I was binging on the Nutella. This time I would have been ok not doing that, although I did look in the Nutella cupboard and it wasn’t there. Maybe she’s hidden it!

fourormore Sun 30-Jul-23 14:51:13

Stayed the same this week (to my amazement after the week we've had) so I'm happy with that.
Good luck everyone and well done MayBee for sticking with us!

It’s important to know that there are other people in the world on theneverendingdiet….I wish that, back in the sixties I’d had the support and information I have now. Back then it was a case of if you want to look like Twiggy don’t eat. And it was also unfortunate that my teenage years coincided with the fashion for mini skirts given that, even when my weight went down to 7 stone after crash dieting, I still had fat legs!

TillyTrotter Mon 31-Jul-23 06:51:28

Hi everyone. Good to red your news.
It’s a sad fact we do have bits of us we think are ‘big’ even when we are a healthy weight and my problem areas have always been stomach and thighs.

I have regained 2lbs last week but feel it may become 4 lbs after a blow-out meal at a fab restaurant yesterday.
And I see others with far more on their plates than me and they look slimmer.
It doesn’t seem fair does it Maybee?
I will try the housework diet for a while - my house will be very happy.

Your photo from Weymouth did make me smile Whiff .
Do you remember seaside postcards - the cheeky ones?
Always good for a chuckle.

I hope everyone is enjoying this non-summer; perhaps we will have a proverbial “Indian Summer” in September ?

MayBee70 Mon 31-Jul-23 11:50:14

I’ve been taking prebiotic inulin for a while. It’s supposed to help with hidden visceral fat. It did give me terrible indigestion for a while, though, but then my body got used to it. I wonder if that’s why I’ve lost weight?

NanKate Wed 02-Aug-23 08:29:20

Hi Pears, you may remember that when I recently bought a jacket, which is slightly too small on the hips the assistant said people rarely lose the weight to fit them ☹️.

Well that has spurred me on to prove her wrong. Firstly I must admit I rarely weigh myself, so instead I am trying on the jacket everyday to see if it is any looser.

I have stopped alcohol other than my one Friday night drink. I am now eating in a 10 hour window breakfast at 8.30 supper at 6.00. Nothing at all in the evening which was hard at first but now seems normal. I don’t have a biscuit with my morning coffee either.

Bit by bit that jacket is feeling looser. 🤞fingers crossed that my new method of weight loss will continue. Watch this space.

MayBee70 Wed 02-Aug-23 09:26:03

Well done! I ate some bread last night when I should have been not eating so I’m going to have my first meal today a lot later. I don’t drink much alcohol but I could easily cut out sugar in coffee so that’s what I need to do next.
