On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

We now have a small band of ‘regulars’ called Pears and Apples who have joined our ranks and they have brought new ideas and support. Many thanks girls what would I do without you all. I am so grateful you have stayed so loyal and been such good friends to us all.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.

Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.

Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my way of life.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

Our mantra is - Eat Less for Life.

Congratulations on your wedding
anniversary NanKate.
Whiff Just an idea for your exercise instructor. At my exercise class the instructor hands out resistance bands for some stretching work.
A loss of 1lb for me this week.
I am enjoying seeing all the shops and houses in the neighbourhood decorated for Halloween and children out and about in some amazing costumes.

Shirleyw Tue 31-Oct-23 03:12:40

Stayed the same this week, which I’m pleased with, not really been trying, lost a bit of oomph.

Well done for your 1 lb loss cocopops

Whiff Tue 31-Oct-23 07:03:19

Four well done with the loss. As we all know our weight changes everyday. All down to how much we eat, exercise, how we are feeling healthwise and even how many times we go to the loo. But like everyone else you keep going.

CocoPops we use long resist bands and circular ones every week and weighs . Well done with the loss. This was on a post box near me. Every event the woman who does them comes up with new ideas every year. She crochets them. The coronation one was lovely and very regal. The Easter one I took 4 pics to get everything in. Look forward to the Christmas one. Lot of houses in streets round me are decorated. One has a huge spider web made from rope over the front of the house and a huge spider in the middle.

My road just does Christmas. Brought extra lights for my front garden this year . They are white stake stars. Only like white lights for Christmas even on my tree. My grandsons will decorate it this year as usual . The little one will beable to reach higher but there will be a fight over my step stool as usual. But it's part of the Christmas fun. Seeing Santa with them on 3rd December my daughter booked it last month.

Shirley your oomph will be back . Like you stayed the same this week again . But have started to exercise twice at home and not just my Monday class.

Yesterday there where 14 of us did a lot of legs work. Had us walking round the circle of chairs on our toes twice . Only 2 can't do it so they held on to a chair and just raised up and down on their toes. Did a lot of squeezing our bums our instructor using the correct term . Even sitting if you squeeze your bottom it raises you up and tightens your pelvic floor as well. But she works every part of our body. It's not just good for our bodies but our minds.

One exercise yesterday may seen simple but try it . Stick out your thumb and forefinger like a gun do the same on the other hand then touch thumb to forefinger on your other hand and then alternate like doing incy wincy spider . I keep making a triangle before it clicked . Another one is called shooting the thumb. Same make a gun with thumb and forefinger then shoot your thumb and alternate. There is much laughter when we do it. Sounds easy but we all get muggled then it clicks . All our exercise moves are done 12 times then she says have a rest all of 3 secs then do next 12. But no matter how much pain we are in we still turn up every week. My late husband would laugh his socks off me liking exercise. But I feel better doing it.

Have a good week pears . 🤗

NanKate Fri 03-Nov-23 14:31:08

That exercise routine sounds great fun Whiff.

I love the crochet work on the postbox.

Your road must look great a Christmas.

Stayed the same weight 😏 but better than putting it on.

Shirleyw Sun 05-Nov-23 02:03:15

Lost 1/4 of a pound 😀

Happy with that. Glad to say I’ve been attending Pilates regularly again, I can certainly tell the difference missing a couple of weeks.

Had tons of rain these last few days, will be needing a boat to get about soon.

Have a good week all.

TillyTrotter Sun 05-Nov-23 05:38:24

Well done SachaMac , Shirley, cocopops and four . There are great efforts being made amongst our group.
Your exercise tutor is very inventive Whiff - essential to keep everyone’s interest.
I used the stretch bands once for an impinged shoulder. The Physio taught me to loop it around a door handle, stand sideways on to the door and do a variety of stretches. It took a while but worked a treat and I kept the bands. They will be lying in a dusty heap somewhere no doubt.

I enjoy seeing the post box toppers - so much work and fun goes into them - and here is one near me.

I should be walking free of surgical pin and clog during next week and stand on the scales I must! I’ll be reporting back then. Wish me luck 🍀

fourormore Sun 05-Nov-23 14:12:46

I'm happy this weekend as although I have a small gain of 0.4lb having lost three last week I was afraid that was going to be wiped out this week as often happened.

Our local yarn-bombers decorate a bus shelter and post box and always do a great job - such talented people obviously exist all over the country!

Keep going everyone as we plod on together!

CocoPops Sun 05-Nov-23 22:49:51

Thanks for posting the post box toppers photos Whiff and Tilly.
I am doing the 16:8 restricted eating plan , reduced the carbs and have lost 2lbs this week. Have a good week ladies.

Whiff Tue 07-Nov-23 06:07:33

Tilly love the post box topper. Glad to hear you are recovering well . Finders crossed for pin removal.

NanKate staying the same is an achievement. When you started this thread bet you never thought you would have such a group of loyal followers. Who never give up no matter what.

Shirley I was always happy to lose a quarter of a pound as any loss is an achievement. Glad you are enjoying Pilates . No matter how much pain or how my balance is off I still go to my exercise class as I feel better doing it.

Four it's only a blip as you know. Would love to see a bus shelter yarn bombed. That must have take lot of time.

CocoPops well done with the 2lb off. Like all of us you have found a way that works for you.

Well 2lb on this week . Been having some extra porridge at night by itself would have been fine but put some of my jam into it. I knew how many cals I went over everyday so I expected a bigger gain than I had. But back to it again yesterday.

This week our instructor had us walking round a circle of 12 chairs doing heel to toe looking straight ahead twice. Problem is I veer off and hit the chairs. I start of walking in a straight line and before I know it I hit something. I have walked all my life looking at the floor so I don't trip hence have a lump top of my spine where the bone is malformed.
Did a lot of arm work with the resistance band . Which I could do easily. But had brain fog during one exercise and complete forgot what were doing even looking at our instructor it took a few minutes of concentration to take in what we were doing . I get muggled some weeks but never had brian fog at class before. But no one takes any notice as we all have more than one health condition including our instructor.

Made my first parkin this week on Sunday for my craft group. Mix tasted great will cut it tomorrow and try a piece . Making an apple cake as well as I think the Parkin will be to sticky to eat with people's crafting.

The picture is one of my crafty friends crochet blanket it's double bed size and has 470 pom poms . She made it for a friend's birthday.

Have a good week everyone and hope no one's gets to wet. Wish it would stop raining .

NanKate Thu 09-Nov-23 21:25:25

We’re a good bunch aren’t we Whiff?

CocoPops Sun 12-Nov-23 19:59:36

No loss this week. Must try harder! Good luck everyone.

Shirleyw Mon 13-Nov-23 03:22:26

Me too cocopops, stayed the same, let’s hope their is a loss next week.

Stewpot100 Wed 15-Nov-23 12:08:10

Hi all, newbie here. Look forward to joining, if I'm allowed smile Need to lose my tummy, hips and now G_d help me....a throat/chin that I've noticed I'm now getting - just like in the old black and white photos I've seen of my great, great great grandmother.

Whiff Thu 16-Nov-23 05:58:46

Just realised I hadn't posted this week. Weight stayed the same . But that's ok . Must try harder . We did circuit training at my sit fit class. It's always fun. One of the exercises was using the stepper. We do the exercises in twos but when we both stepped on the long stepper we bumped our heads . Wouldn't have minded but we did it in the last 5 secs . As we do each exercise for a minute twice. No idea what happened as we had been fine until then. But we where both ok.

I only have to walk past 4 bungalows and 2 houses to get too the church for my class. But because of Debi and my walking took me 20 mins to walk there. 2 woman asked me if I needed help . Which was lovely of them and thanked them but I was almost at the gate and I always worry I will pull someone over.

Shows what a strong minded group we are and how much we love our group as there where 14 of us. Some walk and some drive. Luckily Debi had calmed down a bit for my walk home.

Stewpot100 glad you have joined our merry band of fruits . But as I always say it's a marathon not a sprint losing weight. And you will have your ups and downs but the main thing is not to give up. Each day is a new start. Make sure you measure yourself. As I found when I started to exercise in 2018 once I reached 15.5 st I put on weight but lost inches. As muscle weights more than fat. I was over 19st size 32. But kept the 7 st off and size 16. But been battling the last 2 years to lose the last stone and bit . My weight loss journey stated in 2017. Just losing quarter of pound a week I was happy.

Had to cut food out of my diet that I have no control over. So don't but them.

Everyone has their own way to lose weight . You just have to find a way that suits you. But don't go below 1,000 cals per day and don't starve yourself thinking you will lose weight quicker. We need to eat certain amount of cals everyday for our bodies to function. If you don't eat enough our bodies hold on to the fat cells to keep our organs working.

I weight and measure everything I eat and drink even when I over eat. I try to stick to 1,200 cals per day. But others have their own way to lose weight.

Faddy diets I found after decades of trying don't work for me. And meal replacement drinks are a waste of money and don't fill you up.

I wish you well on your eating less for life as NanKate renamed dieting and you find a way that works for you . But a healthy way.

NanKate Fri 17-Nov-23 21:15:03

Welcome Stewpot to our merry band of losers.

You will have your ups and downs, but NO criticism.

What is your strategy going to be?

SachaMac Fri 17-Nov-23 23:20:04

Welcome Stewpot and hi to all the other Pears on this very cold and damp night. It’s been a little while since I posted as I have been totally off dieting, I have had my mum very poorly in hospital again so I have just been grabbing and eating anything I can.
I returned to SW this week after a two week break and was quite surprised to see that I had maintained my weight. Phew…I have been lucky to get away with it but I really need to get back into healthy eating and loose a few more pounds on the run up to Christmas.
As Whiff says it’s easier if you avoid the foods that you can’t control yourself around. If there’s chocolate or cake in the cupboards I’ll be tempted, especially when feeling tired or stressed!! The festive season is almost upon us and I’m sure we will all be enjoying a few little treats but I need to make these ‘occasional treats’ if I’m to progress! No large tins of choccies for me this year because I just can’t resist them. I hear the contents have shrunk again though smile

Good luck to all, have a great week.

NanKate Sat 18-Nov-23 20:05:35

Good to have you back SachaMac 👍

Shirleyw Thu 23-Nov-23 05:36:22

Welcome stewpot and good morning all.

Up 1 lb 🙄…was my birthday weekend so that’s my excuse!
Like you say sachamac the festivities have begun, have quite a few meals out etc booked so greater control and food choice needed .

Have a good week all

Whiff Thu 23-Nov-23 06:30:25

SachaMac I hope you mom will be fully recovered soon. You did brilliantly maintaining as worry about your mom and just grabbing things to eat could have shown a gain. But the worry about your mom and dashing about off set that. Only my theory but I think serious worry burns calories.

Shirley you are allowed a treat for your birthday. Happy belated birthday 🥂.

Well my weight stayed the same again. Really must try harder. Sit fit we did a lot of arm exercises and I push myself to the limit I just get carried away in class and never think how I will feel later🤦. But I do feel a sense of achievement that I can still do most of what she asks of us. But there was no way when we did the sit down marching and when we lifted our left leg hit it with our right elbow and vise versa. So just continued tapping opposite knees. Our 91 year old member did it . She is a marvel.

It's my youngest grandson's 3rd birthday today. So my daughter took us to a garden centre for lunch yesterday and had something I hadn't had for years baked potato with cheese and baked beans. I had forgotten how much I like baked beans . Mind you it was 691 cals it was printed on the menu. We then shared a piece of millionaire shortbread and chocolate brownie slice between the 3 of us. And had a good walk round outside. They have 2 large duck ponds and my grandson loves going into all the sheds.

Treated myself to the above lights the snowman one was £7 and the red one £12 and had 3 pkts of 50 lights for £10. But I did have a garden centre voucher for £18.50 hence my splashing out. 😂.

Did I say I booked my first holiday since 2005 for May an few weeks ago. As I need accessible room I will be staying in the premier Inn in Berwick upon Tweed. They had the bed height and it's the same as mine and walk in shower. Had their meal deal and booked the flexi tariff. Means I can cancel up to 1pm on day of arrival and get a full refund. As I have to plan everything also got in touch with the tourist board and they sent me lots of brochures and bus time tables . I can get a bus to visit Holy island. So January will make a list of things I want to do. Just going Monday till Friday. 4 hours on the train with only one change but as I have travel assistance don't have to worry about the train. And already got taxi numbers to get me to the hotel.

I have to plan everything been like it as long as I can remember but know it's part of my HPX. Once I decide to do something I have to do it no matter how much pain I am in or my balance is off . As it sets my anxiety off. Never knew I suffered from anxiety 🤷until I explained on my HPX group page how I feel if I can't do what I plan. Then was told that's your anxiety.

Well craft group today made on of our groups Nan's recipe for Parkin as she's from Yorkshire. Also made this week for my other grandson's Xmas fair fatless tea bread, Marmalade cake,2 gingerbread and chocolate cake . Hopefully they will go .

Well must try harder and I really want to lose some before Christmas.

Have a good week pears.

NanKate Thu 23-Nov-23 07:39:16

Do hope your Mum’s health is improving SachaMac💐

Good to hear about your forthcoming hols Whiff. We stayed at a Premier Inn in Bournemouth in September. The room was great, we could see the sea from our bedroom and the staff were lovely. The ‘help yourself’ breakfasts were especially good. Well done for planning everything so well.

NanKate Thu 23-Nov-23 07:42:00

PS love the lights Whiff. And Happy Birthday to your 3 year old grandson. 👍🥳

SachaMac Fri 24-Nov-23 20:25:12

Yes the lights are delightful Whiff they do make everywhere look so cosy.
I’m sure you’ll enjoy your stay in Berwick Upon Tweed. The last Premier Inn I stayed in was in Brighton last year with my DD & GC, it was busy as it was school hols but great central location and lovely comfy beds.
Unfortunately my mum has had a fall only a few days after being sent home from hospital and hit her head so has had to go back in.
Is anyone else finding that this bitter cold weather is making them very hungry!! Ive been craving carbs today but trying not to go crazy as I maintained again this week!! Need to get some losses now!

Whiff Fri 24-Nov-23 20:32:45

SachaMac sorry your mom is back in hospital again. I know what you mean about the cold weather it's been bitter here today. And done nothing but eat and have hot chocolates low cal instant ones. 40 cals a mug. Unfortunately I brought some ginger nut biscuits and been eating through them this week so expect a gain this week.

NanKate Fri 24-Nov-23 21:23:25

Sorry to hear about your Mum’s accident SachaMac. I hope she is improving. I know Brighton well as my son lives a few miles away. It is a real buzzy town. The Victorian Aquarium is worth a visit.

Can I have one of your ginger nut biscuits Whiff. Love anything with ginger in it.

MayBee70 Mon 27-Nov-23 13:50:08

Whiff. I spend a lot of time in Berwick as my partners place is nearby. Not sure if I’ll be there when you are, we’re always there round Easter time. It’s one of my favourite places in the world. The bus service is very good. I used to love taking the train to Edinburgh, it’s one of the loveliest train journeys in the country as it’s parallel with the coast. Spitall is one of my favourite beaches and it has an old fashioned promenade. We always recommend it to anyone with mobility problems. It has a Victorian feel to it which I love, although it’s a bit run down now. Lowry used to stay at Berwick and there is a Lowry trail round the town. The Maltings had a wonderful restaurant that had a panoramic view of Berwick. It’s being refurbished at the moment but I assume it will still have the view. If we’re around I’d love to meet up but if we aren’t I can point you in the right direction of places to go. Back on the dieting front I’ve lost weight because back home I had to work so hard on my house with the flour mite infestation and damp and mould. Even though I seemed to be eating badly I was busy the whole time I was awake. When I got to my partners my weight had remained the same and I’ve actually lost weight while I’ve been here, probably because I’ve slept a lot. I’ve also got no appetite because I’m worried about a lump on my dogs neck. I have levels of being upset. A bit upset and I’ll binge on crisps and biscuits but this is next level where I don’t want to eat. I’m not getting much exercise though, as it’s so cold and I hate the cold!
