See that this idiot government has pontificated about the explanation mark!

Children as young as 7 will be marked down for using out of context.

So the latest idiot rules are that it should only be used with complete/proper sentences in which there is a verb and begins with "what" or "who".

The dead hand of Gove seems present!

Takes no account of modern use and context.

Never been to the black country, wouldn't know where to find it, but use that expression often - confuses my Kentish man!!!!!!!!

For the last few years our little children have been encouraged to (over)use exclamation marks as they couldn't get Level 3 in their KS1 SATS unless they used a 'range' of punctuation. Colons & semicolons being a bit tricky for 6/7 yr olds, teachers encouraged children to use question & exclamation marks. So now, surprise surprise, the goalposts are being moved to penalize children for doing exactly this.
