Hi Rosiebee. Good tip about the Aldi app. i'll download it.
What were your dream names for your kids when you were growing up?
Opinions on this crossword, please
We have a couple of these stores in our large city, not near me but I did check one of them out when one opened. most of the brands are different and much cheaper.I might go back and see where these brands come from.Ive heard name brand companies put different labels on their cans.Anyone buy from these stores and what do you buy?
Hi Rosiebee. Good tip about the Aldi app. i'll download it.
For anyone who likes a G&T interesting
Just to say Aldi are now doing 'brands'. This morning I bought Tetley tea bags, cheaper than anywhere else. Also Colgate toothpaste and a few more brands creeping in.
Were you following me round this morning, KatyK? I spotted the Tetley tea bags as soon as I got in the door and also bought the Colgate.
I've been singing the praises of their gin on here but tonight we're going to try their award winning ToroLoco Tempranillo at £3.99 a bottle
AND they have real All Bran!
I've been buying Tetley tea bags from them since our branch opened several years ago.
Merlot I think I must have been following you as my husband loves their gin too !
Rarely shop in Aldi, Lidl or any other such as the nearest one is 15 miles away and not on any of my accustomed routes. However when I have been in them I found that a lot of their goods were sold in multipacks, which I didn't want because, I do not have enough space in my kitchen to store a years supply of occasionally used items.
I was in Aldi with GD today and didn't have the impression that there were many (if any) multi-packs. I needed some olive oil which is very good value at both Aldi and Lidl; large free range eggs were just over £1 for 10; and there were Scottish strawberries far cheaper than I would find elsewhere and just as good quality as the ones I bought in Waitrose the other day. I bought some for myself and for my GD. She's a bit hard up at the moment, between the end of her course and the results arriving, and has turned over every stone to find a job, so a bit of a subsidy from Granny is gratefully received.
Flickety I've never seen any multipacks in Lidl.
I think Aldi and Lidl used to sell a lot of multipacks a few years ago but not
nowadays I wouldn't say.
Lidl rump steak, £3.99 excellent, we have it almost every week.
I'll be at Aldi's tomorrow morning with DS. It's what we do every Sunday while he's out of work (hopefully very briefly). We're there about 10am and take advantage of the bargains in the chiller cabinet such as fresh meat that has been reduced. Pop it in the freezer and Bob's yer uncle!
I go once a month to stock up on cereal for my son - a third of the price of Tesco equivalent and far nicer, he says. Also washing liquid, parmesan, the camembert is gorgeous and incredibly cheap, ground coffee, croissants, and other breads and pastries, frikadellen, sometimes the fresh meats but we do have a very good butcher and a market so rarely buy veg and fruit but it always looks nice. I have also read lately that their skin serum and moisturiser at around £3 is as good as those costing £60. I haven't been there yet this month but am certainly going to try them. Their cheddar is very cheap too, but doesn't freeze at all well. Stollen definitely, it's lovely. Has anyone ever tried their duck inside a chicken thingy at xmas? Three birds but I can't remember which. I made something similar many years ago and it was a real faff.
What about all the awards won recently by Aldi? They got 5 stars for loads of things- champagne (compared very favourably with Veuve Clicquot) at 12.99! Wine, fruit tea bags etc.
They were compared directly with a lot of products from Harrods.
Terrific value- 4 pints of milk for £1, whereas the local Co-op charges £1.45.
By the way, their Frickadellen are fantastic. You get a packet of 5 large meatballs (hamburger sized) for £1.89. Served with salad or veg or baked beans they make a great meal for 2.
janerowena we tried the 3 bird roast at New year as one of the cold meat platters and it was delicious, not a scrap of waste and as good if not better than M&S,I love their garlic and herb potatoes which come in a sealed bag from the cold counter I could not make it better myself and it serves 3 all for 89P a packet.I do a lot of my shopping there after first using their stores when we lived abroad, the stores there where frequented by the Germans and Dutch and there is no way they would ever give their business to any company that was not 100% top quality produce.
Aldi would seem to have the Gransnet seal of approval. What greater accolade could there be?
I understand that the reason Aldi won so many prizes was because they submitted so many items in so many classes, Something like several hundred items for under 100 prizes while Waitrose submitted 8 items and won in 7
Thanks glammananna, I shall try it this year.
here isn't room for sevveral hundred items in my local Aldi, but as my OH is a Waitrose addict I can certainly vouch for being just as happy with the products I choose to buy there.
Don't buy the lamb shanks in minty sauce - cheap and lovely meat but my the sauce is sweet. In fact i thought that it was worth buying again and washing the sauce off.
jane have you tried the lamb shanks in Red Wine from Iceland it is delish,I think you are right in the minty sauce being a wee bit sweet when I used it I drained the sauce and added some prepared mint sauce from a jar,I should really have the best stocked freezer in our Road as DS1 is manager at Sainsbury's but when staff offers are on the go he just forgets he has a mum who like some treats at a special price
Last Christmas I complemented my DD and SIL on the quality of the vegetables and' extras' we had for Christmas Dinner. All except the Turkey came from Aldi. They now shop there instead of Tesco for most things and are saving a considerable amount each week. I was previously very sceptical about Aldi ,but will now try out the new one planned locally (literally a stones throw from our Sainsburys) when it is built .
Trendy - I too was sceptical. They built an Aldi in my local shopping area
about 5 years ago and there was a small campaign to try to get it blocked.
Reasons given were that it would attract down and outs with its cheap booze etc. I was worried I have to say. But the fears were unfounded.
There has been no such problem. I use the shop regularly and the folks who use it are just ordinary people like me trying to save a few bob.
The local Tesco superstore car park is often nearly empty these days, whilst the smaller car park on the other side of the road is over-crowded because of the Aldi store. I can foresee them swapping!
Thanks glammanana, we now have an iceland although I haven't been in yet. I rarely buy frozen dishes or any ready meals but am starting to, and finding the flavourings very sweet in most so far.
Not on the food side, but I've just bought a lovely pair of coral coloured flatties for about £5.99. A generous size 5, but in this weather when my feet tend to balloon, a perfect fit. I love having a mooch through their 'bits and pieces' aisles after doing my food shop. Bought a large tin of Cassoulet which we've yet to try. Just brought back memories of a lovely French holiday. May just keep it on shelf to remind me!
