Gardening

Good to see loads of bees round the open crocus's/crocii. This is only the third day this season that they have been fully out (sunshine) and they are starting to go over [sad] still, nice to see them

Here we have absinthe instead- our local Green Fairy speciality, born and bred here long before it was adopted in Marseilles or Honfleur smile

When it snows here, the snowploughs are out all night ..

Mamie Tue 12-Mar-13 09:36:39

We have tiny country roads, but we do have a snow-blade for the farmers' tractors that we bought as a council a few years ago. I am sure they will be round later. I think all the main roads are closed too, all school transport cancelled by the prefecture (no messing around with local management of schools here!). Apparently the ferries from Ouistreham are cancelled too.
Everyone will have stocks of wood, food, milk on the hoof and calva. grin

Let's hope everybody is ok. So you are a local Councillor too wink - I wish I could lend you my cross country skis to do your rounds. Stay safe, stay warm.
And not a snowflake here in the Jura mountains (yet). We are so used to snow here, but we are all well equipped with snow tyres, snow blowers and heating systems that can withstand the coldest cold (local record -42.8C). Bonne chance.

Nobody needs nothing?? Snow on the brain.

Mamie Tue 12-Mar-13 09:14:07

Will have when I have hauled them up! Still several cubic metres in the log store, though. Will have to do my rounds of the elderly neighbours later as that is one of my duties as a local councillor. Hope nobody needs nothing urgent, because the only way would be to get a farmer with a tractor!

Ella46 Tue 12-Mar-13 09:09:57

Put your feet up Mamie and just enjoy it smile
(Hope you've got enough logs?)

Mamie Tue 12-Mar-13 08:11:52

Now completely snowed in.... Still got the electricity though. Suspect it will be Thursday before we can get out.

Mamie Mon 11-Mar-13 18:09:55

There are 47000 households without electricity in Basse Normandie. Still OK here, fingers crossed!

annodomini Mon 11-Mar-13 17:59:07

Blizzards and sunshine alternating. The wind has ensured that the snow hasn't settled. I was driving up the road to a friend's house and I saw a white wall of snow coming towards me - it was most dramatic!

granjura Mon 11-Mar-13 17:36:46

Sun just setting here in Jura mountains on Swiss/French border - not a snowflake in sight smile

Mamie Mon 11-Mar-13 13:32:35

Not sure it is in the East of France. Coming down over west of England, Channel Islands, Normandy and Brittany.
Twice warm from the logs, hauled up about twenty and now in front of fire!

granjura Mon 11-Mar-13 13:11:24

Wow - stay safe. Sunny now here - but I suppose that snow in making its way to us now. We are equipped for it here, so no problem.

Mamie Mon 11-Mar-13 12:58:11

We are in the south of Calvados, Basse Normandie. Rain first thing then lots of snow, now sleety. Lots more snow tonight I think. OH has a doctor's appointment tomorrow, but I doubt he will make it. All school transport cancelled and PL banned from motorways.

granjura Mon 11-Mar-13 12:54:53

ooops Mamie, just seen your location in previous post, sorry smile

granjura Mon 11-Mar-13 12:54:06

Remind me Mamie, where abouts in France are you? Here in the Jura, it was sunny this morning then rain, and now greyish. We are at 950m (our nearest town is Pontarlier) and no snow, although there is still some on the ground. Crocuses and snowdrops out for the last few days. Today was so colourful in the garden - several bright red bullfinches on our hornbeam, and our usual great spotted woodpecker on the bird feeder by my window + so many bright coloured bramblings and chaffinches, every kind of tit and sparrows + more.

I actually hope that snow will return once more so that our friends arriving week-end after next from UK will be able to cross country ski as planned. Then Spring can come smile

Elegran Mon 11-Mar-13 11:04:30

Alternating blizzards and sunny spells. If you try to clear a path while it is sunny, you are chased indoors by the next snowstorm. #whydidibother

annodomini Mon 11-Mar-13 10:54:01

Famous last words. There's a blizzard outside at present and the snow is settling though now there is sunlight coming through the clouds!

annodomini Mon 11-Mar-13 09:01:39

It's bright and sunny here in Cheshire but the second I opened the back door, I was hit by an Arctic blast. The big conifers across the brook are tossing madly and there is a trace of snow on the car windscreen. I've also been sneezing since I put my head out, so the wind is carrying allergens.

Grannylin Mon 11-Mar-13 08:59:35

'Beginning to sound a bit like Christmas' grin

Mamie Mon 11-Mar-13 08:13:51

Coming down thick and fast and the French tele has just said that we might get 40cms. OH has a bout of severe arthritis pain in his foot and is struggling to move so I will be spending a lot of time up and down to the woodpile. With that amount of snow I fear for the electricity supply. We have a big woodburner and plenty of bottled gas, but the trouble is that we lose the pump on the septic tank which is not good....

Galen Sun 10-Mar-13 17:48:10

Oh dear! I bet the children are soooo disappointed!grin

Mamie Sun 10-Mar-13 17:45:55

We are near the Orne / Calvados border. Forecast is up to 20cm of snow. The school buses are cancelled already and they were going back after two weeks of half term tomorrow!

sunflowersuffolk Sun 10-Mar-13 16:56:29

We have snow here again in North Suffolk, very bleak and cold again. The Viburnum bodnantense is still flowering away, it's done well this winter. Today have been visited for the first time by a beautiful hare, I love them ....and later on, on the bird feeder was a kestrel .... he then flew to fence right outside the window so I had a really close look at him. Understandably all the other birds had disappeared.

Bez Sun 10-Mar-13 16:45:09

Here in Dordogne I have a lovely tub of pansies in bloom - normal ones as opposed to the winter ones - daffodils are out and also a couple of flowering prunus are starting to show flowers. Still a very cold wind though but lovely and sunny. Temperatures are forecast to drop in the next couple of days.
Have lit the wood burner again - had to let it go out at beginning of the week as the very high wind caused back draught and the room was full of smoke.sad

That should be presenile dementia!
