What's the going rate for gardening help?

I'm too arthritic to do heavy digging and edging, hedge-cutting etc. DBH is not here enough to do it and worries that he will injure himself and not be able to do athletics if he does too much, so as we have a large garden I am thinking that we need someone to do a few hours a week. I would like to put an advert in my village's leaflet saying what I would like to pay per hour, but then realised that I am totally out of touch with hourly rates for non-skilled garden help.

Surrey price is £15 an hour and for that you get someone who can mow the lawn and chop bits off plants. We had a man to do a spring tidy up,last year and he had no gardening knowledge at all. Chopped all the wrong bits off the hydrangea so we had no flowers in the summer. This year we are going for a DIY tidy up very slowly. At least it gets Mr PD out of the armchair and away from the endless property programmes!grin

I have had a gardener for the last 2 days and paid him £20 per hour. We live in North Bucks. He was recommended and worth every single penny. He has done a complete "make over" on one area of our garden which was quite out of control. He salvaged every plant that was valuable and has replanted in a more suitable position after clearing all the weeds. It would have taken my OH and I weeks to do what he has done. I am delighted with the result. grin

It all depends on if they are a proper gardener or just an odd job man. Go for a proper gardener who knows what's what. Here in my part of Oxfordshire, neighbours pay £16 per hour. No doubt you can get someone just to cut grass and do edging a bit cheaper.

We are still able to garden for ourselves but a neighbour has a very good man who comes in fortnightly to trim, tidy etc and I believe he charges £10.00 per hour, this is Leicester.. What he tries to do is have two or three very local jobs in one street or close by saves on the petrol then. He tidies up well and takes all the rubbish away.

Hi Charleygirl,

Is your Gardner available to take on more clients?

I am near Kingsbury/Wembley park.

If so could you be able to pass me the email address please?

cheers

Hi everyone,I'm in Cheshire.Been here 6 years now,but had 50 customers in and around Blackheath near London.Price per hour for general regular garden maintenance in 2006/7 was between £10-14ph.It does depend on the hours offered at any one visit. We put in a lot of full days and therefore dropped the price down. For a 2 hour fortnightly visit to same garden I charged them £20. I was gardener on a 500 acre estate in Macclesfield-house lawns, flower beds, shrubs, climbers, topiary, veg plot, fruit orchard & canes.Did the gutters and drains in courtyard etc…2009 9-4pm m-f £60 a day.I was on-call as chauffeur, fed cat, collected newspapers and supplies, cleaned shoes…
Unfortunately I've broken my wrist! and taking time off for now,but if anyone is wanting a gardener from September onwards, please send me a message. I'll still be charging 2009 prices lol i.e. £10ph

I thought you said you were permaculturing in SW France, Hibouxknits ? That's a long way to commute for some jobbing gardening.

I do gardening for good people, mowing 3 lawns, tending borders, lots of pots planted up and looked after 6 or 8 hours a week and also plied with choc bars biscuits and coffee. I get £10 per hour. I am an ex head gardener. I love being creative and have just created an alpine garden for them. Still enjoy it but my body does so complain these days
