People say I am not a proper Grandad

I have 2 daughters and 3 grandaughters.
People say I am not really a grandad yet as my father is still alive, I go to local leisure centre fitness classes and I am generally out walking my dog at 6am.
He starts barking if he does not go for his walk by that time as he always went for a walk at that time when I was at work.
I also do not smoke a pipe and I do not tend to sit down much between 6am and 9.30pm except when I am on my laptop or eating.

Hi gramps ...if you click on the forums tab at the top, you'll get a list of the different sections ...click on one of those and it will give you a list of all the threads in that section ...most recent at the top.

So ...if you click on 'culture' you'll find a poetry thread; or click on 'Old Borum' and you'll find another.

Hope that helpssunshine

Thanks Jacey,
It's nothing racey,
A poem it be,
All about a tree,
And our comparison,
Maybe, plain to see!
See what you think
and give me a wink,
If the parable you read.
It may well "suck seed,"
I'll then no more ignorance plead!

I think you need to be fit to be a grandad - you sound just about right! DH had a birthday card last week with a little boy and his grandad on the front, in a playground. Grandad: "Don't go on the slide because I can't catch you; don't go on the swing because I can't push you and don't go on the roundabout because I can't run - now off you go and enjoy yourself"! Fortunately, we have not got to that stage yet! Keep trucking, Gramps!

DD insists that I cannot be a proper grandma because I do not have curly white hair. Both her grandmothers had this attribute. However DGC always greet me ecstatically when we meet and are quite sure I am their grandma and that is all that matters.

My granddaughter, when asked who her best friend is, answered without hesitation: "Granddad". Now that is a proper granddad, don't you think?

They have a very funny thread on Mumsnet about children's names overheard in the supermarket. My favourite was "Pocahontas, Pocahontas, Pokey - come here!"

Nice story absent.

I've seldom, if ever, been called 'proper' Lawden smile I am however a grandma
Who wants to be 'proper' anyhoo?

snailspeak Thu 20-Sept-12 19:35:10

A proper grandma is a cuddly little white haired old lady who bakes lovely cakes eaten warm from the oven.
Well, that rules me out then! Off for a wine or three ...

I am an improper granny. Apart from the white hair, that is.

Marelli Thu 20-Sept-12 20:11:22

According to my granddaughter's pals a few years ago, "You've got a real 'cool' grandma, eh?" Think I'm still a bit 'cool', with totally white hair instead of the stripey sort! grin

How come I always join forums too late and therefore receive no follow up? Unfortunately, I do not have the time to keep checking the site and only catch up when the weekly newsletter appears. So many people seem to know each other that I am starting to feel jinxed. Very, very sad.

I, apparently, am "awesome"!!! This from my 16 year old GD.

Grannies are the ones who knit, show you how to cook, say 'when your daddy/mummy' was a little girl, a warm cuddle, a soft lap. Grandads make you laugh, take you fishing, lark about when driving you somewhere, give you a bristley kiss, sit in the loo for hours, help with homework. This was my grandparents. In between travels we lived with them, these were the happiest days of my childhood, I loved them both dearly but I adored my grandfather. My 3 year old GD loves both her grannies very much but has a special soft spot for her maternal grandad. Her paternal one lives in Florida so only knows him as 'Grandad America', he is missing so much as we now have another darling little grandaughter.

smile Hello everyone! Can anyone join this discussion? A proper Grandad has got to be one who loves his grandchildren. We have 2 Grandsons, almost 7 & just 2 years old. My husband is not paternal but has a great bond with both of them. He likes taking the eldest out for walks now he is older (the GS). He can be strict with them & insists that our daughter doesn't take advantage by dumping them on us too often. Third grandchild expected in April..... Get me another glass of wine LOL

Just drifting through some threads and note THAT MY DOGS NAME IS BEING SNEAKILY MISUSED ONCE AGAIN!!!!!! IT IS DUNCAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just to let those who were not around at the time that he kindly consented to act as my familiar at the party, but was so abused that he has never really recovered and has definately had a personality problem since.

jeni Mon 24-Sept-12 20:16:29

That's because he knows he's really Donald!smile

Ana Mon 24-Sept-12 20:20:34

Isn't Donald nellie's dog? confused

whitewave Tue 25-Sept-12 10:55:32

Good grief I only have to turn my back for 1 minute and you are busy undermining my authority, he is already ignoring me when I call him Duncan and now is suggesting that I am not his owner. Well see if I care.

GraniSuz Tue 25-Sept-12 18:16:15

Hey Snailspeak - don't feel jinked! I'm new - joined yesterday. Its like joining a new club, everyone ignores you at first but eventually when they realise you're not going away they notice you - first time for me on a Granny Site hmm

jeni Tue 25-Sept-12 18:26:46

By the way , when's our next party? Do we have an All Hallows' eve one again?

Ana Tue 25-Sept-12 18:38:33

Snailspeak, it is true that sometimes you just have to keep posting - don't lose heart!

Whitewave, I never said Duncan wasn't your dog! If you cast your mind back, it was me who kept insisting he was called Duncan - then nellie confessed that her dog was actually Donald...[indignant emoticon]

annodomini Tue 25-Sept-12 19:08:58

jeni, not sure if we can top the excitement (mania) of the last Halloween party on Pendle Hill, but we can try. Start greasing your broomsticks, everyone!

jeni Tue 25-Sept-12 20:01:56

Where? Tower hill in the Tower of London? All those lovely male beefeaters!

annodomini Tue 25-Sept-12 20:13:22

Would that be sinister enough, jeni? A graveyard might be fun...
