Overprotective parents with animals

Good Evening
Hope everyone is enjoying the ☀️
MY DDI is overprotective with her 2 children in regards to dirt, animals and insects etc, always has been like this since they were babies. My two GC, now age 6&4 are afraid of anything that crawls or walks or 💩. They see a spider 🕷️ and you’d swear it was a child eating monster.

I have horses, so I’m used of everything. They’ve only been to the stables a few times, too scared, they freeze up and cry. Consequently I never ask them.

I took a friends baby there yesterday, big smiles, not scared, had a sit one pony, she’ll definitely love animals now! Just made me think, how early life has an impact on the rest of your life.

Thoughts 🤔 😊

Forest school - yes, the children at the DGC's primary school had special overalls and needed wellies too.

When it snowed and school was still open, they had great fun going outside with the teachers and making snow angels wearing their waterproof all-in-ones and wellies.

We lived on a farm so my children grew up eating heaven knows what. But my SIL got very edgy when one child ate a crisp that had been dropped on a (fairly) clean carpet smile

Is this another in-law bashing thread?

Covert DIL bashing. You are wise.

Huh? How exactly is it 'bashing' anyone?

Everyone has their thing, and sometimes we pass our fears onto our kids. I guess this is what she is doing. You will just have to go with the flow. They are her kids. I just always try to remember this when I am dealing with all my kids and their children.

DH had a lifetime phobia of spiders. My job was to carefully remove any I saw. Our 3 sons were not affected but our youngest, a girl, inherited his phobia.

I dislike mice and rats.

We had dogs and a cat when our DC were growing up and now 3 of them also have animals around.

I took 3 DGC to our local pond yesterday to see the ducks and soon they were lying down to try to spot the tiny frogs. A passer by commented on the scene. He said it was so nice to see children enjoying nature.

It sounds like your grandchildren might benefit from gradual exposure to animals and nature in a safe and fun way.
Maybe start with smaller, less intimidating experiences and work your way up.
Early positive interactions can help them overcome their fears and build confidence around animals and the outdoors.

I used to keep ladybirds in a jar ( how awful is that) I loved to collect them and watch them climbing up the sides Apparently one fell and I ran to Mum very upset saying he’s fell and hurt his hip ! Quite where a ladybirds hip is I ve no idea 🤣🤣🤣
