Buying a first bra

I need to buy the first bra for my granddaughter - her mother isn't on the scene.

How do I measure her? And where's the best place to buy it?

I don't think I've ever seen little first bras on sale anywhere.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Don't go to a department store-find a shop that only sells lingerie and make an occasion of her first bra. She does need to be properly measured under her breasts and across the highest point of them for a bra to fit properly.

It seems that far too many women have no idea what size and style of bra suits them.

Why go through life wearing an uncomfortable and unflattering bra?

Later on your granddaughter will be grateful that you took the trouble to find the correct style and size. Tell her now, that clothes look so much better worn over the right underwear, and that most men in this world look first at a woman's figure and then at her face!

You might like to add that amongst straight men there are two kinds - the ones who look first at a girl or woman's bosom, and those who look first at her bottom- this advice will stand her in good stead later too, so start looking for the jeans that do most for her rear end! Mine has always looked best in Levi's 501!

Are you for real?!
You recommend telling a teenage girl she needs to show off her boobs or her rear so she can attract a man!!? Are we back in the dark ages?

My 3 girls are adults now ,and I have 3 GDs who will need a bra one day.
I totally recommend taking her for a proper measure.
I used the measuring service in Hammonds but I am sure other services are as good.
I could never have fitted each daughter. They were all so different.
It was a lovely and special experience each time.
Mum and daughter time , lovely sensitive lady to help and a pretty first bra which fitted properly.
I did this because I have upsetting memories of my first bra.
My Mum had a chronic illness.
She could not take me anywhere.
She asked my aunt, who worked in a department store to bring me a bra.
She brought an old fashioned, white cotton bra which fitted round my back but the cups were far too big.
The solution?
Fold the cups over, oversew and trim.
Results? Hideous , uncomfortable garment that didn't fit , showed lumps under my clothes and resulted in making me ( an already shy and clumsy teenager) even more a figure of fun in the changing rooms and at Guide camp that year .
I am 68 ... the memories still burn.
Even if she resists this my advice is to persist.
It's so worth it in the end !

I was lucky in that my mother considered "foundation garments" to be the most important clothing. "Get that right and you can wear anything"...

I know that's obviously wrong - even with my "perfect" bras there are some things I could never wear!

Everyone is talking about their daughters first bra. Where is the mum in this OP ? I would be horrified if my own mum took my own daughter for her first bra and fitting without my permission.

The OP said the Mother isn’t on the scene. You don’t need to know anything else, it’s private.

John Lewis are good but Bravissimo fitters are usually young and really good. They don't use tape measures as different makes fit differently plus they have lovely bra selection

Thank you all for your messages. I'll take her to M&S as soon as school hols start.

She needs them mainly to hide her nipples, especially since she's going into High School in September and will probably need to change for PE. She's not at all self-conscious with us, but she would be with other girls.

Thanks again to you all.

A decent 'Department Store' is a good start.

Okay Petra.
Sorry, Supernana1
It's none of my business.

It's ok, Macadia, don't worry.

If only her mother was on the scene, my life would be a lot easier tbh!
