Buying a first bra

I need to buy the first bra for my granddaughter - her mother isn't on the scene.

How do I measure her? And where's the best place to buy it?

I don't think I've ever seen little first bras on sale anywhere.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

If you’re in the UK, M&S is probably a good place to go.

Agree re M&S. You’ll be lucky if she lets you measure her!

another vote for M&S but if she isn't that big, crop tops or those pull on comfort bras are nicer to wear

Can she ask her friends what styles they wear and where they get them from?
Nothing worse than having the "wrong" one at that age 😬

My GD is just 13. She was measured by a lady at Marks & Spencer (pre-booked appointment, it isn't possible to just turn up). I bought her 2 bras from there, and 2 more in the next size up.

M & S definitely!

Another M&S recommendation from me. I took my granddaughter there to be measured and they have nice bras for teens.

I’d look at the Boob & Bust method. Daughter allowed me to measure her but won’t go to a store. She mostly wears a crop top but wanted bras for under fitted t-shirts. They didn’t have her cup size in the teen range at M&S and didn’t have the band size in the ladies. However we bought a pack with the biggest cup size in the teen range and it fit. But I bought her a sports bra in the same range, same size and she’s bursting out of it. I’d suggest taking her to an independent shop if she’ll be measured by someone else. M&S aren’t great at measuring.

Yes, M&S let them measure her not 'her nan'

Do you have a Rigby and Peller nearby?
Or near enough to make an outing of it?

They are fantastic for fittings.
Please don't do it yourself.

I have always had my bras from M&S since I was 12. I measured myself. Never got probably measured until I lost 7st in 2018 by M&S fitter they measured over my bra and asked what style I liked and got my a selection to try on . It wasn't at bit embarrassing and wished I had it done years before when I was bigger.

Rigby&Pellet are good if you can afford their prices . M&S is great for me .

Peller🤦

My GD also got her first bras from M&S, although her mum measured her first. She didn't really need one but wanted one as 'all the other girls' in the changing room at school had them. She insisted on padded version so as not to show nipples.

Like others here, I can highly recommend M&S. I prebooked an appointment and when there, quietly explained that my DGD is autistic and might flap a little. The lady was very understanding and handled it all very sensitively. My DGD was delighted with the pretty bras on offer and we came away with several. They might not be the cheapest option but the service (and the bras!) were superb!

It is so important to get the right bra, that I would highly recommend you have her fitted properly, or she will hate wearing a bra forever. M&S have lovely first bras. I am tiny and wear them myself with an extender as this is how I get the best fit. They are plain and reasonably priced. Remember she will grow quickly and will need to be re-fitted regularly. Unless she is like me who only had a decent bust when I was pregnant.

I wondered if there are any younger women in her family who might help her? Or perhaps the mother of one of her friends?
I've looked online and John Lewis might be a good bet as I think that they do bra fittings too.

Rigby and Pellet, yes expensive but they measure by eye which might feel better for a young lass, or Bravissimo
If she starts or knowing what a well fitting bra is supposed to feel like it will stand her in good stead for the years to come
And the boob or bust method is worth trying

welbeck Fri 12-Jul-24 13:17:21

i don't think you should suggest measuring her for this.
unless she asks you to, which is unlikely.
i'd leave it to the professionals.
maybe book M&S appt, give her a budget and hover at a discreet distance.
what age is she.

Yes def M and S…Well done for being there for Your Grand-daughter 🩷

Shizam Fri 12-Jul-24 14:36:53

John Lewis in London did excellent bra fitting for me recently.

Alison333 Fri 12-Jul-24 14:47:54

M & S have a big range of first bras called 'Angel' which are very good. Your granddaughter could have a look online first to see whether there are any that are 'cool'.

Nannyknee Fri 12-Jul-24 16:02:18

I got one for my 13 year old granddaughter from Marks. She was very happy, slightly padded and comfortable size 32A

4allweknow Fri 12-Jul-24 16:13:10

I've had fittings both at M & S and John Lewis. M & S were fine but John Lewis more so, although the bras I chose were more expensive and that could be why they were a great fit.

Macadia Fri 12-Jul-24 16:26:38

Do you have permission from her parents to do this?
